Default To workout or not to workout?

I have a question for everyone that exercises on a daily basis. I just started a new workout video yestereday and woke up this morning with my muscles aching! When this happens to you, do you rest the muscles for a day and do another workout? Or do you continue w/ the workout and push through the pain?

Personally, I prefer to do a lighter version of the workout - so somewhere in-between. Exercising helps reduce the soreness, but I don't want to overwork the muscle either.

Stretch a little, don't overdo it. I find that if I don't exercise, I will be even MORE sore the second day. There is a difference for me between soreness and pain. So if i'm in pain or it's that bad, I might lay off a day or take some advil. Good luck!

Typically I do because I can't just skip practice because of soreness. My team and coach would be ticked. Plus, usually our stuff is manageable because the program is written with certain goals; however, this past week we are working out alone because it is off season and we aren't even using the 8 hour rule. Anywho, I way overdid and haven't been able to pretty much move the past 4 days. As in, my muscles were sore just touching them and it was unbearable. RFE squats need to be done at a manageable weight starting point. Wow. Anywho, I think it depends on the severity of soreness. I know I did a tempo run after the squats and about fell over. This week will be tough because I only worked out four days last week but it'll be okay. I think you just have to know your body and be very honest with yourself.

I will typically still workout just try not too push your body too far. The last thing you want to do is sideline yourself. If you are SO sore you may need a rest. You have to learn to listen to what your body needs in terms of rest. It took me a long time to figure this out.

that used to happen to me everytime i wouls "start" working-out (like after a long period of not doing it) and then i would be so sore and feel like i couldn't move, so i would wait a day, but then it would end up hurting 2 or 3 days and by the time it'd stopped hurting, i'd given up on exercising. lol.

this time i just pushed through the pain, and stuck with it. i think when you are sore, using those muscles again helps stretch them out and removes some of the soreness. i'd advise caution, like the others said, but yeah, push through the pain!!

I generally push through it, unless I'm bordering on immobile/screaming and crying. Don't push yourself 500% the very next day - it's okay to settle for a baseline/standard version of a workout vs. going hard core.

Thanks Everyone! I went ahead and did it and modified some of the exercises -- I am still hurting but I feel great that I did it!

So this is a question my trainer gets A LOT. Esp from me lol.

His advice is to push through the pain. Make sure you're drinking a lot of protein (skim milk is best) after and before the work out. I recommend a cup before and 2 cups after.

Now, IF you are in EXTREME pain, take a break for a day. But overall, if you don't push through the pain you'll continue to be sore every time you work out.

Also, our trainer has us work out for 4 weeks straight and then we take a week off to give our body a break. I found this to work wonders for me!

Good Luck!
