20-Somethings' October Exercise Tracker & Chat Thread
I started tracking my exercise last month (and didn't meet my exercise goal, :o), so I am recommitting this month and looking for some likeminded 20s to chat and track with!
Well, October will be quite different from September for me. I’ll be starting a 6 week program to train to run a 5k! No excuses, I’ll be doing it. And the whole idea is rather scary! I’m at the exercise level of walking 5k, no problem, but running or jogging it? What are your plans/goals for the month? :carrot: |
Hello, fellow Floridian! I am totally in, because I'm completing an 8 week 5k plan! :) My 5k is in November, do you have a specific one yet? What does your 6 wk plan look like? I'm thinking I might need something a bit more concise than 8 weeks, haha. My sister in law sprung it on me on Monday, and I am freaking TERRIFIED. But, I committed, so nothing to do now but work it hardcore.
|
This is what I'll be pushing myself to follow:
6 weeks to 5k I've been looking at some 5ks in late November: Light Fest Runners' Classic I'm thinking that I'll be doing the Light Fest. ;) Which 5K are you doing? I think the training will be scarier than the real thing, :lol3: I start my "Training" on Monday, October 4th. I plan to be doing some basic treadmill walking before that, but I will do the actual program outside. Ugh, it is going to be hot and gross! I am glad I didn't decide to do this a few months back, hopefully it'll cool down a bit for us. My next step is to just get my distances mapped out so I am doing the right amount as I walk/run around my neighborhood. |
I'm in Daytona, so I'm doing the Cobb's Corner Classic in Ormond.
No kidding, I have myself so worked up about workouts that are 4 weeks away. I am not a runner. Rather, I've never *been* a runner. I suppose I'm whatever I make myself, right? So here's hoping I can make myself a runner by 11/20, haha. Holy cow, I've been doing it off and on for a month or two and before now I had to wait until 8:30 or later to do any jogging. Even then it was awful with this awesome Florida atmosphere. I'm doing all my 5k training outside also.. I've heard it can be hard to adjust to the road post treadmill training and I hate running on treadmills, so I just jumped right in on the road. I don't know what you're interested in doing, but my sister in law and I started looking at various races in the area and found these two: Beach Palooza and Warrior Dash. The Warrior Dash looks a little hard core, but they seem like something fun to do, so you aren't just training for some boring old road race, you know? I personally think they both look flipping awesome, but I know I'm rather odd at times, heh. |
I have a silly goal for October. See... I've never been a thin person, I was probably average as a kid and just sort of ballooned to a chubby teen and now young adult. You know those horrible fitness tests they give you in high school? Well I could NEVER pass the mile test in the time allotted. I wasn't even the largest girl in my school but I was so out of shape (I did have asthma but I grew out of it by college) and I avoided exercise because of how quickly my asthma kicked up. I also had boobs that were hard to contain.
So... My mini goal for October is to get down to a 12 minute mile which may not seem like much but it's a big step for me. I feel like if I get to that point I can redeem myself from all those embarrassing moments in gym class when I was the last girl to cross the finish line. |
Psh, I'd be perfectly pleased with a 12 minute mile. I was trying to establish a baseline for my mile, and as I hate jogging on the treadmills at the gym I opted for giving it a whirl with the elliptical.. even with that help, I hit 14:35 for my mile. I'm certain that would be 16+ actually jogging/walking.
|
Zomb, I know the feeling, :(, but you are working toward that 12 minute mile, which is AMAZING! :woohoo: How do you strap the girls down by the way, I keep hearing that I should double up on sports bras to do it.
I have no idea how long it takes me to do a mile... is that a bad thing? Maybe I better get a pre-training time to see how much I improve. OH MY GOD, SIGN ME UP!!! I want to do the Warrior Dash!!! Muahahahaha  |
I KNOW, OMG, IT LOOKS SO COOL! hahaha I looked it up 'cause I saw someone mention it on the Beach Palooza facebook and they said it was in Lake Wales.. My mom is from Lake Wales, so I thought it would neat to do something there, but then I saw what it was and decided it didn't matter if it took place 1000 miles away, I MUST do it!
|
Alright. It's nearly official. I'm going to go home after work and register for both the Light Fest 5k and the Warrior Dash. Then I am going to chart a mile (From my house and back) and time myself to see how long it takes me to do the mile. "Do", because I sure as heck can't run one now,
I'm going to so get a turkey leg after the Dash, It's like a mini-ren-fest! |
AWESOME. I'm still too chicken to make it official, but I'm thinking after Beach Palooza I'll have a better idea of my skill level and hopefully more confidence. In my head I'm totally saying I'm doing it though... I'm thinking the connotation of commitment, even if only in my head, will offer motivation.
Anyone have any idea where I could practice the tire run thing? I'm a flipping klutz, I'd like to have a go or two at that before doing it in front of a bunch of people, ha. |
Oh, I think I'm going to try out a mile today, too. Like a legit, on the road, just my own two legs, mile. It would be nice to know exactly what I'm working with, not just a low-ball estimate based on the elliptical.
|
I'm more worried over the palmettos (Getting scraped up), the cargo net, and the river logs (Hoppin' over,). That one guy in the video was hopping over them like it was nothing, I wonder where he practiced that! Short of inquiring at a police academy or something (yeah, I am totally guessin'), I have no idea where you'd find the tires set out like that. Hm.
|
The nets freak me out... it says you are allowed to skip obstacles if they scare you, but you'd be disqualified from prizes. I don't expect to win any prizes anyway, so I might have to bypass the nets. Those have scared me since I was a little kid, haha.
|
Hey everyone. I just started the exercising part of my diet due to my csection. I'm starting out with cardio 3x a week and a video. But what's a good video to start out with any suggestions?
|
Good question. :D
I've got the Dancing with the Stars: Dance Body Tone and the Jillian Micheal's 30 Day Shred DVDs. I attempted the first only once, and the second is still in its plastic wrapper :o I stink at DVDs! My coordination is crap, so I hope someone can recommend a good one for you! 30 Day Shred seems to be popular. Well, I attempted the mile run like I said I would... omg... It's only in the mid 80s with average humidity, and I think I killed myself, My pacing sucks, but what's done is done: 9/30/10: One Mile in 12:45.4 Even though I am proud of myself, I think I'll put off the registering until maybe a week of training has passed, haha! But that Warrior Dash is happening, no backing out, RWAR!!! :lol3: |
I have 30DS, but it's kind of hard!:p If you recently underwent surgery, perhaps you should start with something easier? The only other dvd I have and can suggest is Leslie Sansone's Walk Away The Pounds. That one is quite easy, too!:D
|
I'm aiming for 30 mins of cardio 5 days a week for october because I tend to get ambivalent about the gym, skipping days or going but only doing 15 or 20 mins and calling it good because it is better then not going at all... yet other days I'll do 45 mins or an hour. I'm hoping by standardizing it that it'll get me into better habits :D
|
I'm trying to do some sort of cardio something 5 days a week. Right now I'm just running some days (at a slowish, steady jog) and doing Tae Bo cardio videos on the days I don't run. I'm on a tight budget and I prefer exercising outdoors whenever possible. Any suggestions?

Well, Day One of October!
I have a treadmill with my name on it: 1.18 Miles in 21 Minutes How about you guys? Is this a break day or are we going to start the month off strong? :yay: |
I took my break day yesterday, today is C25K training. Or maybe a day from the plan you're doing... I like the intensity of yours.
Tomorrow, gym before work. You people are making me sad with your mile times. I have some serious work to do, obviously! Yeah, Warrior Dash is totally my motivation. I want to do the 5k and Beach Palooza, but I NEED to do Warrior Dash. I *will* do Warrior Dash, and I will do it well! |
Hey now,. ;)You can't compare your time vs. someone elses. It doesn't work that way,.
Everywhere that I read up on running states that "the only times that matter are YOURS"! So basically, the one you are working to improve against is your previous/old times. So be proud of your number and keep working on it! :D Did you try out your mile yesterday, Amanda? By the way, I think I'm going to attempt all the obstacles in the Warrior Dash, it'll slow me the heck down, and I'll probably be more cautious that most on that net, but that's the experience! ;) It is coolin' down here in Florida, YAY! :carrot: |
MadameZombie:
That is NOT a silly goal at all! I know you can do it! I think you will do great with your goal this month! Amanda & zanheltangia: WOW 5 k!! I think you ladies will do awesome! Definitely keep us posted on your progress! My goal this month is to be able to run a mile without stopping! Right now I have to stop about mid way, possibly twice during my mile. :( |
Krampus - Look into pilates, you might be able to get a used book on amazon.com with the exercises. I'm in love with it! I do Winsor Pilates. I like it because you can do it anywhere, no equipment required. :) No gym membership!
As far as outside...running, tennis, soccer...?? |
Wow, that is awesome Lindsey! Keep us posted on YOUR goal progress too. :D
*Dreams about being able to run longer than 15 or so steps* :o |
Thanks! Will do! :)
|
Thanks! That's a good point, I shouldn't worry about competing with my best and others' best. Considering how high mine is right now, it should be much easier for me to improve upon anyway, haha.
I didn't do my mile last night, actually. I feel like a slacker, BUT.. I was doing yard work, raking, weeding, etc... so I know I burned some calories even if it didn't directly contribute to 5k training. I think it is just in my head that everything needs to contribute to running/improving time, ha. Obvs burning calories is useful because the less poundage I have, the quicker I can move! I also need to mark out exactly one mile somewhere in my 'hood. I know the loop I usually travel is 0.7, so I could approximate, I suppose. |
I must let you in on this website then: ;)
Map My Run I did it at work before I went home, so I knew what a mile was. I couldn't get a "perfect" mile distance looping from and back to my house easily, but it was close ( I tend to slack myself, as if I couldn't walk another half of a mile to get back home /facepalm). Yard work is definitely exercise! I used to have my Dad "crackin' the whip" to get it done whenever I headed down south to help him. And at my start weight, oh god... I needed breaks. |
Hahaha, funny you say that... yard work was my sometimes punishment as a kid. We lived on 4.5 acres. :) I was a total tomboy though, so half the time I was out in the midst of the tractors and such anyway. Somehow when it was my turn to mow, I got the push mower though :(
That site rocks! Thank you, thank you, thank you! |
Hey ladies! Great thread :)
I started P90X yesterday. Would love to be a runner, but it still hurts my knees too much to do it for too long! I've heard lots of good stuff about this program. I love being able to exercise at home, and just finished Chalean Extreme's 90 day video rotation about two weeks ago. Yes, that's right, I haven't really exercised in two weeks. Stupid me. But I was able to make it all the way through the P90x video without completely turning it off, so I was pretty proud of that! My boyfriend had to stop 20 minutes in.... i think he was a bit embarrassed.... Zan - go girl! You're almost at a 12 minute mile, that's awesome! Amanda - don't feel bad about your time, like everyone said, you have to compete with yourself... but if it makes you feel any better Zan has five inches on you ;) I envy people with long legs!! |
Aha! Another good point! :) I can only go as fast as my shorter legs will carry me, ha.
Really, I don't feel too bad... it just feels like it is giving me a look at my future: the last lonely person struggling across the finish line :/ I know my thought should be, hey, at least I'm DOING a 5k, and if (or WHEN) I finish, then dude. I *finished* a 5k! Buuut.. that petty girl in my head belittles accomplishment by pointing out all the negatives/embarrassing things. Just more incentive to work harder! Either way, on 11/20, I'm lining up at the start line of a 5k. And first, last, or in between, I'm gonna finish my first 5k... that's an accomplishment in itself. I'll have plenty more 5ks to improve upon my times! |
Naw, Amanda, I really doubt you'll be one of the last ;).
There are a lot of factors to consider, and remember the walkers and those who didn't really train at all that'll be marching along with you at the start, and some of those will be the ones you'll be cheering on as you cooldown at the finish line. I'll let you borrow some of my duct tape, that inner voice needs to sit back and watch you do those Ks, I've already got mine taped to a desk chair , she's been stuck there since last December when I started all of this. |
I am doing my first 5k ever on Oct 16th! I had been doing c25k over the summer but fell out of my routine the last week in Aug. I started my consistent running routine last week but I took out my rest day. That was a mistake. I am getting worse. Last week I actually ran a 10 min mile! I thought it was wrong. and then two days later I did a 14 min mile and broke down to walk twice. :( I am still impressed with my time. I really thought I was going much slower than that. Now if I could just keep it up! I can only run about 15 mins straight on a good day... this 5k is going to hurt. I think today should be a rest day for me but I am going to try and force myself to do the 30DS tonight.
Man I would love to do the Warrior Dash! Makes me want to fly out and join you guys. My parents live in Orlando. LOL |
Wow, 10 minutes? Congrats Kay!
I went and checked their website for CA locations: 10/30/2010 - NorCal 4/2 & 4/3/2011 - SoCal ;) Ugh, my thighs hurt,! But I am still exercising today, dang-it, walking is better than nothing :o. |
I still feel like 10 minutes can't be right! lol We will see if I can do it again.
I also looked for Cali locations. I found the norcal one, I wish it wasn't THIS month! My coworker was looking over my shoulder and said how fun it sounded. I think I might have to plan on doing this next year!! |
I keep telling her to STFU, I think she's getting the drift, the harder I work. I won't let that voice hold me back; she's just giving me minor panic attacks for the time being :p
Good luck, Kay! There's one here in October, but that was wayyy too soon for me, ha. The Warrior Dash is all over, but I say come to FL! We ladies of 3FC will dominate ;) Or at least have the most fun EVAR. |
Now you've got me thinking about making a Tshirt with an image of three baby chicks on it for the dash,. I'll have to think of a wacky saying... Hm...
|
Jan. is like the best time to visit my parents too. Hmmmm I wish I had a larger travel budget!!
|
Speaking of that voice in the back of your head... I had to laugh at myself last night while running. I haven't had my ipod for awhile (wont hold a charge) so I have found myself thinking the funniest things. I say silly little mantras to myself or say things Jillian Michaels would say. Sometimes I chant my goal time or mileage in my head. Last night I found myself singing 60's and 70's tunes in my head. I sang "I can see clearly now" "the letter" and I am pretty sure "twinkle twinkle little star" even popped into my head for a minute. No idea where that came from. I need a new ipod. LOL
|
Hey, I'm all for things like that, Kay. :D If I could recall more than just the chorus for a few songs, I'd be goofing it up too.
I daydream while I move it. Usually some action scene or something (think some part of the Rush Hour movies or something more serious like a street chase or something). :o It motivates me, :dizzy: Well, my exercise is done for the day, yay! Now, I'm off to sleep. Night all! |
I argue with myself, hah. Somehow in the midst of a run or work out my inner voice is nicer. Well, not nicer, she gets pretty vicious, but in the kick my butt way, not discouraging.
Ugh, I skipped last night's workout and missed the alarm this morning to go before work.. busy day ahead, but I've marked of the slot for c25k. I will NOT miss 2 days in a row! |
