I use a site called The Daily Plate where you can look up foods ... even if you don't know the brand, you can sort of figure out about how many calories certain foods have. Along with the amount of calories, it will say what the serving size is. If it's not too embarrassing, maybe take one of those foldable measuring cups and measure your food a couple times until you have a good idea what a cup is, etc. Once you have an idea about servings you should be able to track what you eat better, and consequently, how many calories you've eaten.
Whether you're eating in a cafeteria or not, you'll still come across times where you have to use that method to figure out calories. Maybe you went to someone's house for dinner, or you went to a restaurant that doesn't publish their nutritional information.
