Default Sleep vs. Work Out ?

Sorry, I'm needy this week lol.

So I was out late last night and didn't get to sleep until 12:45. I'm usually a 10:30 kind of gal because I get up early. I didn't work out this morning with the intention of working out tonight. Its now 4pm and I am falling asleep at my desk. I did only get about 5 hours of good sleep last night.

I'm leaving for NJ tomorrow evening, so I HAVE to get up tomorrow morning and go spinning (no chance to do it before leaving) and I'm not going to have much exercise this weekend. The tiredness is killing my brain cells.

My options are the following:

1) do not work out, you're tired, just go to sleep early.
2) shut up and go to the gym and get you butt on that elliptical machine.
3) go home, get your book, walk on the treadmill for an hour.

Any thoughts ?

Exercise, but do something light - like walking on the treadmill. I think the motion of doing it is more important than the claories burned sometimes. If you skip working out, it may start a bad trend. At least it does when I do it.

Hi... I´m new here...
Ok, it´s a tought decition... for me the hardest part is getting TO the gym, but once I start the workout the tiredness goes... and that way you´ll a great night sleep.. I think the best is to just go to the gym, don´t think too much cause u´ll start making up excuses..

Sleep is very important but I would say just go ahead and walk on the treadmill a little to make sure you're getting in some kind of exercise before the weekend.

Yes sleep is important but don't skip workouts. Once you start skipping it all goes down hill from there. You can do it!

yeah me too. I say do something light just for habit's sake. Then if you can only stand 30 minutes....so what you did SOMETHING at least. Then get to be as early as possible. Sleep is just as important.

I'm not sure if it happens to you too, but I tend to get overly tired when I haven't worked out. So if it were me, I would just get off my lazy rear and go to the gym to hop on the elliptical. You won't regret having gone, but you will regret NOT having gone. Besides, you're not getting much exercise this weekend, so you may as well have a couple last good exercises to take you into the weekend. Also, you won't feel so bad about not working out much this weekend if you push yourself tonight on the elliptical and tomorrow morning at spinning. So, go do it and be proud you have the dedication to keep going - even if you don't want to. It's too easy to cop-out these days and that is what got most of us to the weight we're at.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks differently.

If you don't sleep enough your body won't produce enough leptin (I believe that's the name of the chemical), which helps control metabolism and hunger. I remembering reading somewhere if you are just that tired then you should sleep vs. working out.

I definitely agree about the importance of sleep! However, I do think some kind a placeholder type workout is wise to - something short and sweet that gets you to bed early, but keeps the daily exercise habit alive.

It wasn't laziness that was making me tired !! I literally got 4 hours of sleep last night and I hadn't been sleeping more than 5 hours since Sunday, so I think my body reached its limit of sleepiness.

I had some errands to run, so I wound up doing that, I was walking around and carrying bunches of stuff, so I'm counting that as my "place-holder." Stuff just came up, so I'll go to the gym tomorrow AM and after work since we're not leaving until later, if I'm up to it. I was literally falling asleep as I was driving home from Home Depot. Trust me, I hate to not exercise every day, but if I can barely stay awake for a mile drive, I would have fallen off that treadmill.

I was going to go to sleep as soon as I got home, but my roomie's gf was here so she cut my hair and OFF I GO. I should get a good 7 hours before 5:30 am spin.

Thanks for all the responses though - I definitely agree with you all, I just think I was beyond the "placeholder workout" and I didn't realize this until after I left the gym.
