Question Calorie Estimation

So for dinner tonight I gave in and had a bowl of clam chowder at one of the places on campus. I looked up Clam Chowder on TheDailyPlate and just picked a random recipe that sounded right. I probably had 3-4 cups, and I estimated it at 360 calories. I'm wondering if it was actually more. If it indeed was about 360 calories I'm still under by about 500 calories today. I think maybe later tonight I'll have a light snack like my soy yogurt or half of my odwalla protein shakes? Anyway...Just wondering if you all had ideas about how to estimate stuff like this.

360 calories sounds very low for 3-4 cups of clam chowder. Chowder is made with cream or milk, potatoes, clams, and butter. And a single serving is usually 1 cup (8 oz).

So 3-4 cups would be 3-4 servings, and probably around 200 or 250 cals per serving.

That's just my estimate ... not knowing exactly what went into the recipe.

Maybe inquire where you purchased it as far as how it is made. If it's some mass made stuff, it might have come from a can with a nutrition label.

Which type of clam chowder was it? A Manhattan clam chowder is in a tomato based broth and it's pretty low in calories. New England style clam chowder is cream based and also includes potatoes. It's very high calories.

It was New England style. I did some more browsing on TheDailyPlate and estimated it at 700 calories. And I'm still within my calories for the day so that is okay...

700 sounds more like it. That's what I would've guessed.
