runners?
is anybody out there?
just nod if you can here me. ... today did about 3 - after 4 weeks off from horrible ankle sprain i have run 3 times starting last friday (maybe 2.5) sunday - maybe 3 and today. I stopped on sunday because I felt if I had gone longer my ankle might hurt - and today I had some knee problems - have no idea why - hopefully will be better tomorrow. --- come back come back wherever you are! |
I'm still about :) This last week has been a little out of whack because i've been on holidays and sick but i've tried to keep something up
Saturday - went for a 14km (8.75 miles) run ( with nasty steep hills! Thank you coast) Sun & Mon...on hols and sick (typical lol) Tuesday just a quick 30 minutes/6kms (3.75) on the treadmill (was still sick) Wednesday went for a 7km (about 4.3 miles) run outside...it's finally starting to be LIGHT when I get home again *yay* Today I had off Tomorrow I will probably go for a treadmill run in the morning for 9kms (5.6 miles) AND on saturday the boyfriend and I are planning a nice loooong run around the mountain and lake...about a total of 16kms or 10 miles. My boyfriend and I have entered the City to Surf again this year and are aiming for under 80 minutes :D I'm excited already and it's not till mid August! |
I'm trying to be a runner! When I exercise it's usually run/walk intervals but I'm working up to running only and it's coming along nicely. I don't know about mileage because I usually go trail running and don't have one of those nifty little gadgets that tell me how far I've gone but I'm usually out for 40-60 minutes each time. I'm working my way to a 5K!!!
|
Yeah, I'm here...
I just got returned to Denver and- gross! There is this awful cloud that has been over the city from the fires in utah and the air quality has been just awful so I haven't been able to run since I have been home from TN. However, I had a great summer of low-altitude running. I started doing interval training (HIIT) with sprints and had some great results with that. Hopefully, the rain today will clear some of the smog up. |
*nods*
I ran my first 10K last week! I did it in 1:09:12 and goal was 1:10 so I was happy. Never thought I'd be running a 5K let alone a 10K. I did a 4 mile speed run on Tuesday. Tonight's another run by I'm not sure what I'm doing yet. bida, hope the ankle and knee feel better! |
Bida, hope the ankle and knee feel better also!
And Stacy congrats! Gorgeous picture! I'm still here my running ladies, and I'm pretty consistent. I took a break for a week from every day/every other day, to only twice this week because life stressors were hitting my hard and fast. Even though the times I was running was like my RELEASE! Well keep running ladies! |
I run approximately 3 miles a day 3 days a week. I have been running for about 2 months now. You wouldn't believe the change in my legs and butt. Running is so worth it. I would like to up my running to 4 days a week. Maybe after my vacation next week I'll try it.
I would love for this to be a long term thread here all about running. I love to run and I would definitely provide some input on a regular thread. |
Hey - thanks all - the knee is a bit better today - though I didn't run - sad sad.
and i just ate too much sugar - wish it wasn't so late - would almost go run now :) wv - we lurk around and stay active as long as people continue to log/post! so join the group - log - talk about running issues - enjoy! (you can search for some of our previous logs - all usually with the title runners) now if I could expel as much energy into my real writing and not here on the blogs and running, maybe I would get somewhere! to steal a quote from a guy that writes for runners magazine waddle on - B |
Had a great run/walk this morning! It was pretty cool (well 85 degrees is cool for arizona anyway!) and a little cloudy which was really nice. Not sure how far I went but I was out for 40 minutes and I feel great! I hadn't run since last week and I definitely noticed my legs were feeling a lot more tired but it was a good tired, not painful.
I hope ya'll have a good run today! |
Last night didn't go well for me I'm afraid. We planned on doin 5 miles but after about 1.5 I had to quit. Not only were my legs sore from a workout the day before but I started to get a pretty bad headache. I was dissapointed, I'd had a string of good runs lately and wasn't prepared to have to quit one.
wisher, wow, 85 is crazy! We thought it was bad out here in Ca but at least it's cool in the morning and evening. We usually run around 7:00pm or so. So it doesn't really cool down at night? |
Not really, it doesn't get below 100 here until after midnight so if I want to run it HAS to be early morning (today I was out at 5:30). I visited my sister last week in San Diego and I thought "wow it's going to be great running in the morning when it's only 65 or 70!" I was partially wrong, the humidity really affected me even though the temperature was so low!
|
That sounds like our summer here...the only time I can really go running is 6:30 in the morning and even then by the time I get back you can start to feel the skin burning. We can go about 8:30pm as the sun is going down but it's still awfully hot. The average day would be between 33C-38C (91F-100F)
At the moment it's a balmy 0.4C or 33F at 11am and we're about to go for a run...yesterday morning it was -2C (28F) and didn't my little fingers feel it! I swear the sweat on my forehead was frosting up lol. |
I agree - love CA for its weather - always cools down when the sun is about to set - or early in the morning!
I had a great bad run yest - started at about 8:20 - it was one of those great runs where you can be completely in your thoughts and not know that you are even running - except for the occasional thought of - pay attn to traffic. I got some good "writing" done. But then my knee started hurting - so I started walking - but I was stilll doing well - and didn't want to stop being outside. So I stopped home for a second (to jot down my notes thus far) and went back outside to walk somemore - but then I decided to run (Becuase I saw someone - it was like 915 at night by now - and I hate being in my running clothes and seen walking - I feel like a failure) and started sprinting - so I did a sprint series around my block - and I decided I would not stop till I physically could not do it anymore. And I ran hard - for a while - it was GREAT - i felt like I really had worked out. Unfortunately that was about all the great writing I did last night - but at least I got some ideas done - maybe I should go walk some more now. B |
Went for a run at dawn this morning, the sunrise was beautiful to see out in the desert. Unfortunately even at 5:00am it was 90 degrees and horribly humid from the rain that was just moving out. hopefully tomorrow will be better running conditions!
|
Had a good run tonight, 5 miles at a comfortable pace. Definitely my redemption run after having to quit last time. It was cooler than it had been lately so we were able to go before dinner which was nice, I hate running on a full stomach.
bida, I wish I was able to think about other stuff during my run! Every step and breath is all I think about unless I'm talking so I make my husband talk to me the whole time. Great job going back out and doing sprints, too. |
I would love to start working out in the mornings instead of in the evenings, maybe I'll get to that later on, or something. Perhaps next week I'll make that a goal for myself. The gym I go to is usuaully so packed from 3 until close (closes at 9 :( ) and I don't know, but it makes me self-conscious to run...
Either way, I got about 4 miles today, 3.96 to be exact, a really slow run, took about 45 minutes or so... But at least I got it done! |
Hubby and I ran on the beach for the first time last night and I loved it! I didn't know how it would work with shoes on the sand but once you get to the wet/packed down stuff it's fine. It was definitely more difficult though. We ran for 30 minutes, maybe a 12 min/mile. Better on the joints thought. We'll probably switch to one beach run a week. It was the first time I was really able to clear my mind too.
|
I ran yest and the day before. Both were not inspired runs - though I enjoyed my music selection yest (sometimes I enjoy slow, sometimes I need fast!) But yest's run I tried to make it a little longer - (back to my normal length) and I had to stop maybe after about 3 and a bit miles - I walked the whole route - to finish it - but I guess I shouldn't be expecting miricles - since I took like 4 weeks off - they shouldn't be super easy yet - And I know I am always mislead on the first few runs - because my body is so excited to be moving again it is easy - but then when it realizes its gonna be routine it gets tired - and doesn't like to keep going :)
alas! I am going to try a boot camp tonight - I AM - I've put it off for two days - but I'm really Scared!!!! (It's at a gym - it's a class - super scared!!!!) B |
I'm a runner, currently on workout #2 of week 5 of the c25k program.
I'm getting there... |
I did intervals today - at that place I was scerred to go to - I managed - I did it (cept I cheated a bit on the incline intervals) (can only get stronger!!!!)
Gonna work hard for a week - see what happens! B |
I had a pretty yucky experience yesterday running. My husband wanted to do this aquathon down in San Diego so I told him I'd do the run with him. I thought it would be more varied abilities but it was all these hardcore athletes. We were running 9 minute miles (which I never have before) and came in LAST. Definitely disheartening. Especially since they teamed me up with this superfit girl who was only swimming. I felt like I let her down. Half of it was on the beach which made it even harder. Oh well, now I know better I guess. Once my poor sore hammies are better I won't have to think about any of that again
|
Oh i heard about that - supposed to be really fun - hey don't let that discourage you - I run maybe a tiny bit faster or slower than that in the tris that I do - and I haven't come in last! (cept my first one and I came in 2nd to last - but that was sooo long - and running was last - I prob did like a 12 min mile :) i walked a lot - was soooooo tired!) keep it as a motivator ;)
i ran a quick cool (not too fast) down run today (bout 25 minutes) don't know how far - but it was just so i went outside - cause I was inside all day! and feel so much better for doing it. go run! |
The sun -finally- came out today so even though it's still nippy even at midday went for a nice run, about 6 miles. I like this particular route as it has a lot of hills, ups and downs and change of terrain.
I stopped to pick up a friends mail just before getting home and discovered amongst the junk mail a boot camp flyer...only catch is it starts tomorrow! Gah! Will give them a ring and see if it's still alright for me to come along, it would be great fun :) |
boot camp is fun - in that it's everyone struggling together :)
they seem in shape too - (since it seems people go there regularly :)) the one I go to was mentioned on entourage too :) yay! thats too many smiley faces for my day off - bad day off bad day off! |
Hi!
Can I join? I *think* I can call myself a runner... I've been running for three months (as of tomorrow) with a couple of small breaks here and there, and I did my first 5K on Thursday. I'm pitifully, pitifully slow, but I'm okay with that -- for now! My friend and I went and did a 10.1K walk/run yesterday (6K running) and I felt AWESOME. However, today I went to try 5K again, and I could only do about 4. I guess I'm pushing myself a little too hard right away. Before Thursday, the farthest I went at one time was 3K, so I guess I need to ease into it a bit more... Anyway, I hope nobody minds if I post here. |
you are totally a runner!
welcome! |
Hi Guys! I didn't know there was a running thread here! I am easing my way back into running after a few months break. I really enjoy the challenge, and pushing myself. I'm training for a 10K run thats in October...but right now I'm just working on getting my stamina up again, since I haven't really run consistently in a while. I went out for a run tonight - probably about 4K...I had a break in the middle though. I ran to work to set up an experiment for tomorrow (I work in a lab) and then ran home again. In any case, it felt good, and I'm glad to be out there again!
|
You guys are all inspiring! I just got back from a 3 mile run.. I still haven't gone farther than that. So many of you have done races... I think that is my new goal. Sign up and run for a 5k and then work towards a goal of eventually running a 10k.
PS I do a bootcamp too - so much fun! |
Just went for a run this morning at the gym on the good old treadmill :)
Was 8kms (5 mile) at 7.5mph with intervals at 9 mph periodically...and chucking the incline up and down a bit for excitement :P Spin class tonight! |
Ouch - that sounds like a tough run!!!
I don't go that fast or far - but I was reading runners mag - and it was telling me how much time I would shave off my distance with weight loss - its like 2 minutes for a 5K - so now I gotta lose to get faster!!! (and help with weight loss!) do you usually do a morning run and then spin at night? Seems intense! B |
^^ I read that same article too Bida - definately more motivation to lose weight!
Question - have any of you guys ever run with a running group? I found this group kind of near me that runs twice a week. They say they have runners of all ages and all speeds but I am still nervous I would get left behind or something... But at the same time I want to be pushed harder to go farther. I have yet to run more than 3 miles... |
Bida: If I am doing a spin class quite often because I get to the gym a bit before it starts I will do a quick 15-20 minute run on the treadmill beforehand, it's really good for warming up!
About once or twice a week I'll do a full run in the morning and class at night on the same day - sometimes its more just depends on how I'm feeling. Today I went for a run in the morning - just a quick one, 4 miles in 30 mins kind of a compromise because all I wanted to do was sleep in lol. It's cold in the mornings here! Silver: I haven't run with a group before as such but I DO go running with my boyfriend. I find it makes me work harder because of being stubborn and not wanting to seem puffed before he does lol. I end up going a lot further or faster than I would by myself. Tomorrow is bootcamp! Should be rather interesting :) |
I've finally recovered from that horrible race last week! My hamstrings hurt for days. I did get about a 5 mile run in yesterday at an easy pace. Tomorrow I'm going to do a brick workout. Run 2.6 then straight into the pool for 500m. It will be my first time, but I've decided to do my first TRIATHLON in October so I have to step it up!
Speaking of races, I have my Iron Girl 5K on Saturday. This is my first race that I'm really looking forward to instead of being worried about. I'm hoping to finish under 30 minutes. My last one, in May, I was almost 20 pounds heavier and had only been running for six weeks and I finished in 33 so I think that's an attainable goal. Silver, I'm in the same boat as you. There's a local group here but I'm afraid to go with them. They sometimes have a "true beginner" run but usually they are doing 8-9 minute miles. I'm kind of in between. Plus they meet at 6am and that's not happening for me! If you decide to go let us know how it is! It sure would be nice to have people to run with. Lyria, that's pretty hardcore! Spin class is a killer, I don't think I could do it! |
When I trained for the marathon back in the day I ran with a runners group (or rather took a running class) once a week for a while. It was GREAT - it totally motivated me - and I like to run alone - to run with other people and work my speed up.
Now in my triathalon group we have weekly track practices (this past semester they were too early for me) that are great motivators - we do interval training. I usually ran my own speed - but it helped we were all doing this together. I competed in two triathalons this past semester! Now in my bootcamp they have a two level work out - the first is on the treadmill, the 2nd part is on mats - so it's like running together - really fast and hard :) all and all Its good. |
bida, what triathlons did you do? What distance were they? My first is going to be a super sprint because of that darn swim otherwise I'd LOVE to do the regular sprint distance. I'm going to do the women's subaru one at Mission Bay in October.
|
I have done a Sprint and an Olympic. The olympic was my first one - I believe it was a 1 mile lake swim, a 24.2 mile bike and a 6.2 mile run. It was intense - but in the most BEAUTIFUL location - the bike ride was amazing - the run I died on and the swimming was slow - but all in all I didn't come in last :)
the sprint was a 3.1 mile run a 12 mile bike (something like that) and a 400 M swim - it was backwards, and the swim was short - because they only had a pool - I did really well in this one (for me) - plus the swimming was short and the run was first - so I could rock that and the bike - and try to pull through the swimming. I think I will try another olympic one day - but not too soon - but this bootcamp I am taking is kicking my *** - so it is def making me stronger. Today we did 3 3 minute intervals of 1.5 minute walk 1 min jog 1 min run and 1 min sprint. Then we did this other interval thing where we ran then sprinted then ran backwards then did side shuffles - all at a 5 percent incline (and ran some more.) joy joy |
I hope I can be like you guys when I *grow up*! ;)
You're all so inspiring! I did 5K again yesterday, was feeling pretty good... and managed to shave a minute off of my time because as I got about 6 blocks away from my home, I came across a man um... exposing himself in public. :( It was really, really disturbing and made me run a lot faster. But hey, I did the 5K! |
hehe - whenever inspiration peaks go for it :)

Owie!
Hi guys! I just joined a few days ago and wanted to say hi and thanks for your posts..I've been secretly reading them! :)
I've just started running about a month ago and was SHOCKED when I was able to run a 5K trail in 33 minutes. I didn't think I could even jog the whole thing but I did, and I was so proud of my time. :carrot: Anyway I have enjoyed reading everything you guys have been posting here! Since you all are more experienced runners than me, what can you tell me about avoiding pain? The main place it bothers me is in my shins and my breasts ..I found a pretty supportive sports bra at REI and it still hurts a bit to run (although not nearly as much as with a floppy pull-over SB!). The shin thing is really starting to get to me...I feel like cardiovascularly I can keep going, but sometimes my shins hurt too bad to continue. I have noticed a bit of improvement in this over the past couple weeks, so I'm wondering if it just gets better with time or if I should be doing something else for it. I do try and stretch everything out before I run. Ok, I don't want to ramble too much... Goodnight runners! |
Shins can sometimes be related to the shoes you are wearing...or it could be shin splints? I don't know how to fix and/or relieve this as it isn't something I ever suffered from.
I used to get very bad knee pain until I bought some new shoes and they've been absolutely wonderful since then :) As for breasts again...not something I've had to contend with as I'm an A cup and there just isn't enough there to bounce :P |
