It's hard, for sure. I do more "leisurely" things to get exercise. If I don't run early in the morning or early evening, my fiance and I will go to a huge local park and walk (about 3 miles) or play frisbee and while it may not be an intense cardio session, it's not daunting, either.
We just try to keep busy doing things that don't scare us back inside. The same worked really well when I was in the south for part of the summer... My girlfriends and I would go power walking when we got off work and after sitting in an air-conditioned office all day, I needed the warm up!
