I was down 40 pounds before anyone other than hubby commented. Now it's mentioned virtually every time I see my in-laws.
I think a lot of that is because BIL and SIL want to lose weight themselves, so they keep asking for my input on how they should go about it. I make suggestions, they ignore them, and then they ask me again a fortnight later!
That's hilarious - my in-laws do the same thing! I think people really want to ferret out some sort of "weight loss secret," so they're extraordinarily disappointed when they hear it's mostly a matter of moving more and eating less!
I had lost about 25 lbs. before anyone really noticed, and then my mother didn't say anything about losing until I gained that weight back
This time around I'm trying to hide that I'm losing...at least until I reach one of my short term goals. That way,it will be even more noticeable Of course,my husband notices now...and thats quite alright

Oh, I start right out with it. I lower my voice to a conspiratorial tone, look one way then the other, and preface it by saying it's this great new program that only the most exclusive folks can do.
Then once I get them all intrigued, I grin and say "Eat less and move more" and we laugh. But I get my point across.
Then, if I'm nice about it, I give them more detail -- eating more veg and fruit, cutting back on sugar and refined flour, counting calories, eating more often but smaller portions, focusing my meals/snacks around protein, walking or working out three times a week at least, drinking lots of water.
I'm sure I"ll get sick of it sooner or later. For now I'm pretty excited about it, so I don't mind.
Around 30 - 35lb at a guess, but that was mainly because I was buying new clothes which showed off the difference rather than wearing the same stuff but a bit looser. A lot of the early comments were "I like that suit" or "your hair looks nice today" which could have come from my increased confidence and interest in my appearance as much as from the weight loss. People did notice before they said anything though, and asked people who were closer to me (e.g. my secretary at work) rather than me for fear of saying something wrong!
it does get a bit repetitive after a while, particularly when they realise there's no secret to it other than hard work.
Most people noticed at the 30-35 pound mark--like others, that's when I dropped a very noticeable pant size and the week when I started wearing the smaller pants they noticed. My friends noticed more at the 20-25 mark when my cheekbones began to make a reappearance. My CATS noticed at the 35 pound mark when they started sleeping half on my hip at night (I'm obviously an easier shape to lie on now! )
Many people at work seem to "notice" but don't say anything. We recently had a company event with folks from all our locations around the US and UK and people who hadn't seen me for a year noticed and said something--I think it's been SO gradual for the others than many just readjust their mental image of me (I often go weeks where it's only .5/week). Slow and steady.
