Exercise Accountability, or "I DID IT!!"

I went back a couple pages and, unless I missed one, the last exercise thread was Sheila's back a couple of weeks ago. So here we go!

When I've started these threads before, I usually was encouraging folks to just celebrate their exercise, naming it here. But this time around, I'd like to suggest that it might be a good idea for some us to also state our exercise plan for the upcoming week. I know that for me on my first week back on plan 100%, I'm going to need all the support I can get in holding myself accountable for meeting my commitments to myself. I don't want to have this sort of nebulous, "I'm going to exercise this week" kind of goal. All of the components of my plan at this point are quantifiable and time-specific, and I will measure my performance not solely by the number on the scale, but by how my behaviors matched up to my goals.

That said, I'm committing this first week to just 5 measly sessions of the WATP 1-mile walk. My energy and stamina aren't great yet (and all of my exercise equipment is in storage :yikes: so this is my plan for my first week back. I am not holding myself to morning exercise, or even committing to certain days -- just FIVE. 20-MINUTE. SESSIONS. I'm thinking I can pull this off! ;)

I did the 1-mile yesterday, but that doesn't have anything to do with this week's goal. So why do I mention it, you might ask? Dunno. :dunno: Just to make me feel good about myself, I guess!

Any other joiners?? Don't leave me hanging out here alone -- Mezster? You around?

YP1 12-05-2005 01:21 PM

Well done for getting your plan down in writing - we can hold you to it now!

My plan for the week is to go to the gym Monday - Thursday for running/weights, a swim on Friday and possibly a run round the park on Saturday depending on the weather and how much Christmas shopping I need to do. I had a decent run on the treadmill today so that's one day down. I'm trying to have a big two week push before I fly over to see my family for Christmas so I'm trying to ignore the darkness and coldness and just do it.

Jen415 12-05-2005 02:27 PM

Hi Sarah!

I've got my December goal in my signature...to walk for 30 minutes minimum 3 times a week (12 times total). I'm going to work hard to surpass that goal! (But not too hard to cause myself to quit!)

jmacway 12-05-2005 05:08 PM

I am going to walk 3-5 miles a day. I have walked 7 miles so far today. 5 miles walking at school and 2 miles with my WATP tape

Safora 12-05-2005 08:05 PM

I am going to do cardio for 1 hour 5 days this week. I am also going to do pilates or weight lift 3 days this week.

lessofsarahtolove 12-05-2005 08:43 PM

Hello Helen, Jen, Joyce and Victoria!

Woo hooo, so these are some great plans! :carrot: I really find it so motivating to be part of a group of focused, purposeful individuals. :)

Alas, no exercise for me today -- the messy, snowy/icy weather tonight resulted in an hour and a half ridehome. After working late, by the time I got home I was just completely knackered, and then I had to paint for a half hour before making dinner (we're about to put the house on the market)......so tomorrow is another day.

So who did what?

jmacway 12-05-2005 09:30 PM

Sarah, I bet you did some stretching and reaching when you were painting. Your were painting the house right? That shoud count for some exercise, you were moving!

missaprylj 12-05-2005 10:37 PM

Went to Curves today.... and every other day this week is my goal . :D

babs2810 12-05-2005 10:42 PM

me too!

I plan on doing 30 mins of intentional exercise every day this week. either my walk tape 30 mins treadmill.

I have gotten it in for today!:carrot:

rabidstoat 12-06-2005 07:51 AM

My exercise goals are pretty challenging, considering my dismal last month, and two-fold:

1. Do 1000 minutes of exercise
2. Do 8 weight-training sessions

The weight-training I haven't started. Still. At all. I'm thinking maybe if I find 3 meals a week where I have like 20-30 minutes of time with things cooking in the oven, I could do it then. Watch TV and lift weights. I'll move my weights and exercise book down to the kitchen today, and maybe try it tonight. But it's hard, because that's usually the time I spend cleaning the kitchen, which will end up a disaster.

And 1000 minutes of exercise is hard, it's more than 30 minutes a day. Plus, I have some days it's hard to exercise, like when business trips make for really long days. Or when I have a Christmas party at night. Or the days I'm on the road 10 hours driving to my mom's house and back for the holidays. I'm trying to change it so I work out in the morning, and go to work a little later, and get home a little later. But it sure is hard waking up an hour and a half earlier than usual to do it!

ChocLabLover 12-06-2005 10:41 AM

Okay, I will set up my plan for this week:

Monday Morning: 30 minute brisk morning walk with the Dog
Monday Night: 45 minute Boxing workout
Tuesday Morning: 30 minute brisk morning walk with the Dog
Tuesday Night: 45 minute brisk walk with the Dog
Wednesday Morning: 30 minute brisk walk with the Dog
Wednesday Night: 45 minute Boxing workout
Thursday Morning: 30 minute walk with the Dog (hmm :chin: do I sense a theme)
Friday Morning: 30 minute walk with the Dog
Saturday Morning: 1.5 hour walk with the Dog
Sunday Morning: 1.5 hour walk with the Dog

sabriena 12-06-2005 11:21 AM

Since yesterday was my exercise day off and today was my start of the week and I've done my exercise today I'll plan on doing my exercises (basic bootcamp taebo) 2 more times then my next day off on Friday, then the weekend doing it all over again :) We can totally kick exercise in the rear!! :)

YP1 12-06-2005 02:36 PM

5k run (28 minutes) and upper body weights this morning.

luflic 12-06-2005 02:55 PM

You ladies have inspired me! Love your picture in the dress on your blog! Congratulations to you!!!! Fantastic!

jmacway wow you walked seven miles! I push myself to walk three miles a day and I feel like wow when I started this journey couldn't even walk a quarter of a mile. I needed to see that. Feeling sorry for myself because I feel like I am working so hard and no weight is coming off at the moment. I am on a two month plateau. Needed to read this post and get my butt moving more!! Thanks.

Rode my recumbent bike 8 miles this morning
Walked 1.5 miles

Safora 12-06-2005 03:02 PM

I did the elliptical today for 1.5 hours. Hopefully I made up a bit for slacking off yesterday.

Yogini 12-06-2005 03:24 PM

WOW! 1.5 hours on that thing? I am just starting out on it and 10 minutes KICKS my BUTT! :bravo:

I have decided on a new workout plan that gives me 3 days a week of weight training and 3 of cardio. On some days, I do both Yoga and weights and on some I do both Yoga and cardio. I will get in a swim, steam and sauna where I can!

My weekly goals are to burn a minimum of 2500 calories through exercise.

Basically, I'm doing:

Monday: 45 minutes of Cardio (10 of the elliptical, 15 on the recumbent bike and 20 on the treadmill) and 90 minutes of Yoga

Tuesday: 60 minutes of Yoga (teaching in the AM), 10 of elliptical and 30 of weight training

Wednesday: 45 minutes of cardio (10 of the elliptical, 15 on the recumbent bike and 20 on the treadmill), 60 of Yoga (teaching in the afternoon) and another 60-90 of Yoga in the evening

Thursday: 60 minutes of Yoga (teaching), 10 minutes cardio (elliptical) and 30 of weight training

Friday: 60 minutes cardio (treadmill, broken into 2 sessions of 30 minutes)

Saturday: 10 minutes cardio (elliptical) and 30 of weight training

Sunday: I will rest or occasionally take a morning Yoga class for 90 minutes.

djs06 12-06-2005 10:21 PM

Oh Sarahgirl, it's so good seeing you back in your "element!" you are SUCH a motivator! I've really missed you. How are you doing? We must catch up. I'm so proud of you for recommitting yourself after everything you've been through. I'm just... astounded. (Sorry, not very articulate tonight! LOL)

Well, I just got done with two HUGE term papers, so I've been running on a mere few hours of sleep for the past five days or so. Now that that's out of the way, here's the plan for the next few days. I'm going to have to plan out the times I get to the gym since I have class and work and such, so right now its more important to actually figure out WHEN i can go, sooo:

Tomorrow 10:30 a.m.- 45 min cardio (30 min cross trainer, 15 min elevated treadmill), lunges and squats
Thursday- after 4:30- 50 min cardio (30 min cross trainer, 20 min elliptical), abs
Friday- 10 a.m.- 50 min hour cardio (30 min cross trainer, 20 min elevated treadmill), lunges and squats
Saturday- noon- 1 hour cardio, abs

I don't think I've met any of you before.. good luck with your exercising!! Keep us all posted! :cheerleader:

Yogini, I really want to try yoga. I've taken classes before and done tapes but I'd still definitely consider myself a novice. What would you recommend to start out?

jmacway 12-06-2005 11:01 PM

How did everyone do with their exercise for today. I walked 3 1/2 miles. No PE at school today. I didn't have to keep the students running today. Specials were music and art.

I suggest looking into any plus-sized or gentle yoga classes locally or if you have Netflix, check out one of the many DVDs available. Shiva Rea and Sarah Ivanhoe are popular with many people and have several levels of routines available. I teach kids yoga, plus-sized yoga, restorative yoga and Kundalini yoga and they frequently overlap; any good teacher can and will adapt each class to meet each student's needs, regardless of the "theme" or title of the class. Yoga is good for EVEYBODY! Please have a good time :carrot:

taekwondomom 12-07-2005 01:14 AM

Hi all.
Need to join in here; been slacking on my exercise and think that is the root of my plateau. So, my plan for the week is this:
Monday: Tae Kwon Do class (done!)
Tuesday: 3 mile run (done!)
Wednesday: Core Exercises, Tae Kwon Do class
Thursday: Core Exercises, 3 mile run
Friday: Core Exercises, 2 mile run
Saturday: Core exercises
Sunday: Day off

kykaree 12-07-2005 07:59 AM

I've got a sprained ankle, and can't gym it for at least a week, and it's likely to be two. So I went swimming today. I stopped counting after 30 lengths and just swum. It was really nice, and it's the only thing that seems to give my hoof any relief at all.

jmacway 12-07-2005 08:27 AM

kykaree,
Sorry about your ankle but am glad you got your swim in. Hope you heal quickly.

babs2810 12-07-2005 09:38 AM

Oh my gosh, so much to catch up on and reply to! Everybody's doing so well!!! No time now, alas.....I will return later to do just that. Just wanted to say quickly that I did my 1-mile WATP this morning before work! (Incidentally, I've lost 3 pounds so far this first week back on plan, so I'm a happy girl!)

YP1 12-07-2005 01:27 PM

20 minute run (3.5k), 1.5k walking level 20 hills, 5 minutes rower and some ball exercises (abs)

When I got mine, I couldn't do more than 5 min. I've only had it for a couple weeks. What I did was, once I got tired on it, I went really slow for a bit and then picked up the pace again. (Sort of like intervals) Now I can go at a decent speed for an hour and keep my heart rate up.

babs2810 12-08-2005 09:21 AM

I didnt get on my treadmill last night. no excuse. i just didnt do it. i will do it today!

lessofsarahtolove 12-08-2005 09:37 AM
