...weighing myself, that is! The good news--I've lost 10 pounds since I started 12/27/04, and 13 pounds since my post-pregnancy highest. Yay for me! And thank you to all of you for your support and encouragement! It's making all the difference.
The bad news--I really wanted to put off weighing myself until Valentine's Day, but I saw the scale there this morning, and I couldn't resist checking where my weight was. I'm going to put it away so I'm not tempted again. I don't want this to be about weight loss, and in my thoughts, it is becoming a constant litany of "oh, if I lose 10 pounds a month, by May I'll weigh x..." For me this is a dangerous place to be in mentally--I already ate a little more than usual for breakfast this morning. This is about changing my eating habits and being more active. The weight loss should just be a bonus. For those who don't weigh themselves regularly, any tips on how not to be a slave to the scale??? Thanks!
Darlene, thats great. I am thinking like you and this is not for what the scale says it is for my mind and body to get healthy and the weight loss will happen because of it. It is not my main focus. I am still going to weigh every week to give myself some inspiration. If I am changing my habits it is a given that the weight will go down.
No help on how not to get on it except maybe to get rid of it and just weigh somewhere else.
Great on the weight loss. The scale is my problem too. Keep up the good work. I just got a new scale and am having trouble working it. It measure BMI and Body water. So, I am staying off until Sat. (my offical weigh in). Then having DH help me. It has the memory, so can't play on it much.
Just a minute... I'm trying to get the chain... conected to my scale out of the way so I can type. Ahh there we go. No problem I'm totaly chained to the scale. I've tried not weighing but it's my motivation. Good for you for not needing it.
And AWESOME job on the weight loss. I'm so happy for you.
Good for you. Doesn't it feel good?Saterday night is scale nite and I look forward to it when I know I've been sticking to it.I've lost another 10lbs myself sence I last weighted after x-mas. I didn'tweight last week because I had been off track but I guess it didn't hurt me to much.
10lbs is great!! I am chained to my scale too, I need it to keep me going. when I see even little .5 lb losses every couple of days, it's exactly what I need to keep motivated.
Darlene, I am NOT going to congratulate you on your weight loss and reinforce the idea of the scale as a source of validation!
I AM going to congratulate you for starting down the road of making lasting changes in your lifestyle, and for understanding that this ISN'T about weight loss. You have EXACTLY the right idea, and all I can say is, you GO girl.
P.S. A little curiosity is normal, but you have the right idea about putting the scale away for another month or so.
Darlene,
Congrats on the10 lbs! That is wonderful!! I know it's hard to avoid scales when you're trying to lose weight, but there's nothing wrong with checking your weight once a week or so. It will not only keep you motivated, but it helps keep you honest whenever you might be straying from your plan.
Melissa
Way to go! Maybe you should weigh at first, when you're starting out, so you know how your plan is working. But in terms of not weighing in or being tempted... I couldn't tell ya. Just tell yourself that you'll be happier with the results if you wait. Put it somewhere where you REALLY have to consciously make an effort to take it out, like the top shelf of a closet or something. That way you can talk yourself out of it before you get the stool.. hehe.
Thank you for all the encouragement and suggestions! I put the scale on the top shelf of the linen closet in the bathroom. If that doesn't do it, I'm going to put it down in the basement (although I may never find it again if I do!).
Dana, my son will be a year old already in February! I'm totally remembering how I felt last year at this time whenever I read your post. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk some baby talk!

Darlene that is great. I'm trying a different tactic with my scale this month. I'm weighing every day so I can see how my eating patterns affect my weight. I have an official weigh in on mondays where I record my actual loss for the week. I'm learning though that I weigh less on Wed. or Thur. and start packing on a pound or two over the weekend.
I too have a Cupid Cutie (he was born 2-3-4) I can't believe it's been a year either!!
