I'm glad you got lots of good answers here, I would agree that sweating just because you are hot does not melt fat; and I also hope he is just friendly and harmless, but the mom in me says do NOT go anywhere alone with him.

Every gym must have a resident "expert" (sometimes more than 1) who is more than willing to provide advice -- usually unsolicited. One of the reasons that I kept wearing my earphones even after my ipod broke!

This reminds me of my friend who told me I needed to go get someone to put boiling hot rocks all over my body and then I would pee away all the fat. Gotta love the crazies!

Good grief that sounds like insanity. Glad you have a head on your shoulders to not listen to that crap. Sheesh.

I agree with what everyone has said. I wouldn't go anywhere with him. And unless he's a certified trainer or has credentials, I'd walk the other way.

From what I understand...sweating is very important and cleansing. Maybe he did not mean it would make you lose weight...but just sweat more. I know that if I have a good sweat when it is nice and humid, I feel so much better. Getting those trapped toxins out. There are many professionals who swear that one of the keys to good health is to make sure you sweat. It does not have to be from exercise. That is why you see saunas and steam rooms get so full. It really is very good for you.

I used to see people doing that all the time and it was dumb back then! I live in South Florida. Summer is approaching. Don't you know that if sweating made you lose weight I would not be on this site!!!

Sweating only makes you lose water weight. It's unfortunately not related to fat. I live in the tropics so if ONLY!!!! Here it's so hot and humid year round, you can "work up a sweat" just by sitting around outside. There's a guy in my gym who's new and comes to workout in one of those silvery, foil-type jackets and it's the strangest thing ever, firstly because I thought those foil suits had died in the 80s or something and secondly, because it's like dude if you want to sweat that badly, don't come to the highly airconditioned gym in a sweatsuit, go run outside, it's at least 80 degrees 24/7, 365 a year.

Sweating is good for you because it does release toxins, but it does not help you "melt" any fat. Excess sweating is not good for you - that is why you are not supposed to sit in a sauna for any long period of time. I would not suggest using a garbage bag to help you sweat more - just sweat normally and rehydrate your body with water all throughout the day, even before you work out.

There was this one woman at my old gym who swore up and down about drinking some concoction and then sitting for hours in the sauna. We never got a clear answer as to what was in it, but she drank it out of what looked to be a rubbing alcohol bottle (in fact, the sauna always had a heavy medicinal/alcohol-ish smell after she left).

Hahaha. This is great! Right before my wedding, when I was trying to drop a few more ounces, Lol, my husband bought me this sweat suit thing that looked like scrubs meets garbage bag, and he was like, "Babe, just throw this thing on under a couple pairs of sweats and hit the gym." He was like, "This is how I dropped weight in wrestling. You'll lose like ten pounds overnight." Hahahahahahaha. I knew it was bull$hit, of course, but I was so tired of listening to his, "A hundred years ago, when I was like 12 years old, I used to drop 20 lbs by jumping rope in a garbage bag" while i was actually busting my A$$ at the gym everyday. So I did it. I wore it, along with sweats and got crazy looks and did my elliptical workout for 90 min. I came home in a puddle, and he was so satisfied, until... I. DID. NOT. LOSE. AN. OUNCE.

My cousin does that MMA fighting. He went to a sauna to sweat off some water weight to get in a lower fighting bracket and lost his fight due to dehydration weakness. ALWAYS keep yourself hydrated. If you're doing some hardcore workouts or you find yourself profusely sweating then hydrate with something that has electrolytes. Powerade, gatorade, whatever you choose.
