Aydenz - you are right that free weights take longer to learn which they do but it is also more effective. I started on machines but I really wished I had turned to free weights sooner than I did.

A great site to learn about weight training is

Weight training or any sort of resistance movement (I use bands, they're cheaper and take up less space than dumbbells, and I find I am less likely to strain something using them) is one of the best things you can do for your body. It increases bone density, metabolism, makes you less prone to injuries, and generally leads to that vitality feeling we're all going for . Even something so simple as carrying some arm weights while walking will drastically increase your calorie burn.

Even if it slows down the scale, are you looking for an arbitrary number or a look/general fitness? If you want to look great, scale be damned, and feel grea too, then weight training in addition to your healthy diet is where it is at. It is arguably more beneficial for your body than anything besides light cardio.
