I saw the video of her singing and I thought she was awesome!! She looked happy, to me. But that voice, wow!!!!
|
I was a dead ringer for Shelley Winters. Apparently. When she was at her heaviest and I was at mine...and she was, like, 103 years old and I was so much younger.
sigh... Kira |
Someone once told me that I looked like, "That woman from Misery." (She meant Kathy Bates). I was devastated. Of course, Kathy Bates isn't terrible looking but she is 30 YEARS older than me and not exactly who I picture myself as...
I'm more a Jessica Rabbit... :) |
Ugh, I'm sorry. Some people just don't know how to give a compliment or keep things to themselves, and so I don't think she meant to insult you, just that her compliment was misguided. Don't let it get you down!

I would definitely take that as a compliment. Queen Latifah is a gorgeous woman. |
I was inspired by Susan Boyle. She is proof to not give up on yourself or your dreams. She walked out there not matter what and sang like an angel. She has never been kissed and I am sure she is well aware of her physical shortcomings. BUT...we all have them AND SHE DID NOT LET IT STOP HER FROM LIVING HER DREAM!! Much like we are trying to do ourselves.

I felt the same way Buttercup, she gives me courage. I think a good girlfriend day for her and she would be pretty as well. Her personality shines right thru as it is.

Ailidh, if that's you in the pictures you've posted (and I have no reason to doubt that it is!) you don't look anything like her. I think she's a lovely woman with a beautiful smile, but there's no resemblance at all.
Having said that, I know how easy it is to get derailed by someone else's offhand comment. I spent my entire teenagehood thinking of myself as hideous because my sister used to delight in telling me I looked exactly like Sara Gilbert (as her character on Roseanne, you know, the prickly younger daughter). What she meant was that I was sarcastic and kind of mean and defensive because of my own issues just like the character, and she was absolutely correct. What she *said* was 'you look like her', and what I heard was *you are ugly*. I'm not saying Sara Gilbert is ugly, but I didn't find it a flattering comparison at all. My long-winded point is that it's taken me YEARS to stop thinking of myself as ugly. I am still working on it, and I just half an hour ago caught myself thinking awful things about my looks and had to give myself a talking-to. It's one reason it's taken me so long to deal with my weight issue; I was ugly anyway, so what did it matter if I'm fat, right? Well, I'm not ugly, but I still feel that way a lot. My poor sister would never forgive herself if she knew what that horrible joke did to my self-esteem, because she didn't mean it that way at all. But words definitely have power, and an offhand comment, even from a stranger, can cut deep with some personalities. But I still don't think you look a bit like Susan Boyle. (And I don't look anything like Sara Gilbert: Sara, Me) |
I think you are beautiful.
I honestly think that Susan is a very pleasant looking woman. I think the TWO OF YOU look NOTHING alike. At all. :) |
that just seemed rude shes got nerve !
|
The whole ugly thing is true. I mean, it's not at the top of my head all the time but it's certainly always lurking. When I get a comment like this ~ and it's the fact that it wasn't said to be rude, just an observation that made it feel worse ~ and it's unrelated to any outstanding qualities that the person compared to probably has ~ it's like someone whipped away my disguise and shouted, Aha! You were Pretending to be more attractive but you're just plain fugly. Back to work on my self-esteem! |
You seriously think that you are ugly? Are you for realz?????? You my dear are very much NOT UGLY and trust me... I don't blow sunshine up peoples arses.
|
When I was in high school people wouldn't just tell me I looked like Stephen Page from the Barenaked Ladies they would actually think I was him, I had people ask for my autograph on various occasions. That wasn't that bad - but in college i somehow turned into Philip Seymour Hoffman!

Edited to add: That was in no way intended as a put down to your or the very talented Mr. Hoffman. But I DID think it was funny. ;) |
