Default burning in the sun

This might be a weird question but here it goes. I have a lot of loose skin since I’ve lost weight. My question isn’t what to do about it (I’ve already read all about it and accepted the fact that I’m probable going to have to have it surgically removed) however my questions is now that my skin is loose I burn every time I go out in the sun. My arms, legs, face and it's worse where the skin is looser. I never use to burn. Is this a normal problem with loose skin?

I've never heard of this before -- I can't tell you from personal experience because the last time I had a sun burn was in the early 90's. I tan VERY nicely, but I cover up all the looser skin, so I don't know if it would tan easier. I've just started swimming for the summer, so I'll let you know if I see a difference between the firm and loose places

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure this will be helpful, but this year I burnt my legs. I have NEVER EVER burnt my legs, WITH SPF 30 no less. So is this a case where only your loose skin is burning? Or is it possible your skin is more sensitive to the sun? Just a thought..

I have never heard of this as well. But perhaps by having the skin stretched out it has caused it some damage and therefore it is more prone to sun damage. Not sure. Be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen. I'd put it on before I left the house and then keep some with me to reapply during the day.

Are you on any new meds? Some make you more sun sensitive.

Maybe it's just hotter now than it was when you used to go out and not get burned? Global warming etc?

I would think that it's got to do with the skin being thinner at the site of the stretch mark, since a stretch mark is the separation of the collagen fibers in the dermis (the middle layer). Possibly having to do with the production (or lack thereof) of melanin. I'm afraid I don't remember enough of skin anatomy to tell you for sure, though.

As for burning, you're using sunblock, right? Put it on BEFORE you go out in the sun, not once you're there. And reapply often!
