I think that part of it is certainly the shallowness of thin=beautiful. However, in all fairness, I think most people who compliment weight loss are those who care for you enough to notice and encourage you. Also a contributing factor is that when you lose weight you are probably eating better, exercising, sleeping better, etc...and all those contribute to a "looking good" appearance. Healthy=beautiful!

Also, based on everyone's comments it seems like when you lose about 10% of your body weight is when people see it. Come on, 231!!! hahaha

Once before with me it was about 20 lbs, from coworkers who saw me eating healthy and walking at lunch, so they knew I was trying. Now I work more alone instead of on a team, so I'm not visible to anyone but my neighbors at the bus stop. None of them are really close-enough friends that I think they would feel comfortable commenting, plus, it's been so cold we're all buried under coats. I do look forward to April to peeling off my down coat and revealing my slimmer hips and thighs and see if people start looking at me quizzically then. But I have to remember these are the same people who were kind enough NOT to comment when I packed on 30 lbs in 2 years, so they likely are a little more restrained. My dh and dd's comment constantly, but they are sweeties who see the effort and are very considerate people.

I know I looked awful before starting this journey. Hearing the comments now just validates what I knew in my heart. I think people say things to us for encouragement ~ they do not mean to bring anyone "down" by telling us how great we look now. AND most of us are taking better care of ourselves in this journey ~ we have a "glow" that people can see!

I don't care how many people say it is discriminatory - being a large person is NOT appealing, NOT. I was FAT for most of my adult life, and I am looking forward to being an average one for the rest of my life.

It really is different for everyone..
I think because I knew I was losing weight I acted more outgoing and really felt better so people would make small comments at around 20 pounds..
At 50 lbs people really started to talk... Now 105 lbs gone people really really talk..Most think I had the weight loss surgery.
NOW.. I can lose 5 pounds and people can tell.

Isnt it sad that our society thinks that weight loss surgery is the only way to lose a lot of weight anymore? Congratulations on taking control of your body and your life! You are an inspiration.
