I am so sorry to hear about you being in the hospital!!! I will be praying for you, my BFF has UC and after a long battle finally seems to have conquered it but it has a long road been about a 1 1/2 years and she is still recovering her strength. I pray it doesn't get as bad for you as it was for her, the Doctors were on verge of taking everything out and she would have had a bag when she turned around and started recovering.
I have a dear friend who has dealt with UC for years--I'd be glad to put you in touch with hym if you want. My former coworker's husband also dealt with UC and Crohn's for several years. Not that I'd recommend it but his colon ended up bursting (promise this gets better!)--sounds horrible, but the surgery fixed everything. He has no more symptoms now and though he had a bag for a while, he had an additional surgery and now doesn't need the bag.
I pray that you feel MUCH, much better very soon. Sounds like there are lots of knowledgeable people here and as some have said, the drugs and knowledge about these conditions have gotten so much better in recent years. Now that you have a diagnosis, things can get much better! Isn't it bizarre that the fiber and veggies were bad for you? My coworker's husband had to eat the exact opposite of what I was doing on SBD to get better--soft white bread with as little fiber as possible (no crust), almost no veggies...definitely no salads, almost no fruit...he could have some of them, but not with any peel, no seeds, etc. But! It does get better.
Take care of yourself, hon! We'll be thinking of you and missing you. I'll be keeping you in my prayers.
I was discharged tonight. And I am NOT going to do well here as I need to go completely ANTI-South Beach for a while. White bread, processed foods, refined foods...
I just can't wrap my head around it.
Plus there is no way to prevent this flare up from happening again. After 5-7 days or so, I can go back to eating fresh fruits and veggies but not many. There will be foods that trigger this reaction and I just need to keep a running list.
So it looks like South Beach is against my health! Sucky McSucky if you ask me! You mods were right in which you say CHECK WITH A DOCTOR FIRST!
OK, going to drug up and sleep. Thanks for all the well wishes! They worked and I am out before Turkey Day!
Jenne, I'm glad you're back home again. Taking care of you is the most important thing right now. I hope you have a smooth and complete recovery and everything goes well for you!
I'm SO glad you're home, Jenne! I know what you mean about it being the complete antithesis of SBD...when my coworker was telling me what her DH was supposed to eat, we were both shocked!
I hope, most importantly, that you can heal and learn to cope with the IC in ways that make flare ups unlikely. In the meantime, though I'm sure you wouldn't recommend it to anyone else, I have a feeling it'll be a pretty effective weight-loss plan, eh? I bet DW is thrilled to have you home in time for turkey day! Can you have any?
Hope you'll still check in with us from time to time! There isn't a thread on digestive/GI issues like UC/IC and Crohn's in the Dieting with Obstacles forum, but there should be, IMHO...maybe you'll start one when you're feeling better?
Jenn,
I know you are not feeling well and it may take a few weeks before you are back on your feet and feeling like doing anything.
the restricted diet is to give your GI track a rest and let it heal up, but it does not mean you have to ditch your diet forever. I lived on crackers and sliced turkey and sstical for about 6 weeks before I would try anything else. this is a good time to see a nutritionist that can help you figure out what your trigger foods are, what foods jut flat out "hurt" and hat foods are fine in really small amounts.
i have been where you are. you will manage this and you will be fine on the other side, it is a lot to deal with.
again, if I can help you out, please feel free to PM me...
Thanks everyone. Yes Laurie, I will start a thread on it. I just took my meds a bit ago and am feeling up to eating. food porn: but i have to eat chicken fingers and mac and cheese! UGH! I am keeping to small portions though, which is good.
Thanks for all the support. DW, who never cooks, is coming back from Boston Market now so yes, I can have some good stuff on turkey day. Small portions though. I hate to think of gaining weight you know?
Thanks again and I will be active here so you can't get rid of me that easily.
