  • Im just wondering if you are concerned about carbs? I am a calorie counter and all I count in calories not carbs. I used to be a low carber but I never felt energetic like I do just counting calories. The most important thing is to have a calorie deficit yes? I am just wondering what everyone else is doing.
  • I count calories and depend on that total number as my guideline for the day.

I don't care about carbs per se because I find them to be trigger foods that wreck my whole diet!

I don't eat potatoes, bread, crackers, and very little pasta (only if it's in a Smart Ones meal, for example). These foods make me want more and more (and more) so I can't be trusted with them.

The carbs that are in unprocessed foods (fruits and veggies, some brown rice) haven't stopped me from losing weight at all. But I'm careful with my portions.

    Hope this helps!
  • I love me some potatoes, rice and gourmet breads. I can't count carbs.

However, I have been cutting back my portions on high carb foods like these. They taste good, but a small portion is just as satisfying as a large portion. At least, I keep telling myself that. High Carb foods are usually also high calorie anyways.
  • I am more worried about sodium than carbs. And carbs have in no way stopped my weight loss. Good luck!
  • I just count calories..if i counted carbs i would probably starve to death ! most of my most frequently eaten foods are chock full of carbs ! pasta, potatoes, cereal, Bread, frozen meals..i'm sure you all you all get the point !

as long as i am at 1300 calories a day i dont sweat the details all too much. I try my best to eat balanced meals and i do take my vitimins.
  • Looks like I'm similar to what everyone else has posted: counting the calories and not the carbs. I, too, try and stay away from over-doing it on the pasta and avoid having breads/pasta unless it is in a smart one or a piece of homemade whole-wheat bread with spray butter (mmmmm. think warm, soft and delicious and even that I hardly ever have)
I figure when my weight-loss stalls I might mess around with doing less carbs, but for now what I'm doing is working perfect for me because I don't feel deprived at all and thus hardly eat off plan.
  • OK. I'll be the odd duck in this thread. I do count carbs -- mainly because I'm very carb sensitive, addicted to sugar, etc. I can lose just counting calories, but very, very, very, very slowly -- as in maybe 3 pounds a MONTH. With counting carbs as well as the calories, I can lose about 2 pounds a week.

But I need to do this. I'm insulin resistant after years of eating whatever I wanted plus having a family history of diabetes. The counting carbs approach is a valid diet approach, but in terms of counting calories and carbs, that probably depends on the person and what their bodies can handle.

Oh yeah, I also have to watch my sodium intake. I'm counting so many things, it's amazing I find time to eat!
  • I'm a counter...I count just about everything. Calories, carbs, sodium, fat and protein. Perhaps it's because I'm an accountant...so counting comes naturally! That said, I primarily focus on calories and on keeping my sodium down. When it comes to carbs, I avoid bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, but don't worry about veggies or fruit.
  • I don't count carbs, but I do try to keep them pretty low or else I'm hungry. On a typical day, I don't usually eat bread, potatoes, pasta, or rice, (maybe one serving, if that) because the calorie counts can be a little high for my low range. Especially because I'd rather have a cocktail than more food.

Other than that, I don't worry too much.
  • I also have insulin issues, so I count calories and carbs...I wouldn't lose weight otherwise.
  • I would say that I count calories, but I monitor carbs. I try to keep my net carbs under 50g per meal (or 150g per day), and if I'm really doing well, that number is closer to 100g/day. Anything more than that, and I feel some pretty intense cravings.
  • I think I too count cals but monitor carbs, Protein, fat fiber and calcium. I aim for 45-50% if my cals from carb 25% from protein 25-30% from fat.
  • I only count calories.

But, I do generally stay away from carbs. If I have carbs I try for whole wheats, etc. Carbs leave me feeling hungry and the sugar spike from the gluten makes me emotional. I would rather have 3 bowels of brussel sprouts

I also watch sodium and fat at times. I always try to go to the store when no one else will be there so I can take my time looking at the nutirition labels of things. It is addictive!

Most important is to do what works for you. If you are losing weight, great! If you stall, maybe experiment with watching your carbs for a bit, etc.
  • Oh, I meant to say...since this is a lifestyle change, I want to look at the whole spectrum of health. That's why I at least think about carbs, sodium, fat, fiber, etc.

I'm feeling very immature today and this made me giggle. Talk about a high fiber food!

(I'm not the spelling police, just having a little fun. Please no one take offense!)
