Coaches/Buddies

Thank you so much for your kind words about my mom. Your support means everything to me.

I am in the midst of getting papers together to settle mom's estate and collecting her furniture and other effects from her villa at the retirement home. It is a daunting task! She was a definite pack rat. I have been thinking hard about this for the past few days. Hope you don't mind me dumping some thoughts here. She was not a hoarder as depicted on tv. There was no mountain of junk preventing her from sleeping in her bed. In fact if you went into her villa you would think she was neat (some of this doubtless due to her neatnik companion, Dave). But she had one area in her study where she kept her papers that was a mess and she had stuff stashed in little nooks and crannies all over the place. She must have 30k photos, going back to the last century. Now this stuff is all in my house and I have to sort through it.

I am the same way. Neat on the surface, but pack ratty in reality. How does this relate to weight loss and Beck? The stuff that I stash away from sight is stuff that I don't want to deal with...I'd rather lose myself in a tv program, drinking a glass of wine and noshing on almonds, than sort through the things I don't want to see. This is the type of behavior that has sabotaged me throughout life...I become deliberately unconscious around food, hiding from myself what I am really eating. One of the benefits of Beck is that she makes you examine all these weird behaviors. But change is hard....

I am sorta back. Yesterday I hauled out my cards and planned my meals. Need to reconnect with the green book. I am still stuck on the "no choice" part of the resistance techniques.

BUT I am so blown away by everyone's creativity and successes here:

Beverlyjoy: glad to hear you are recovering

Lexxiss: credit you for deciding food is not an emergency and all the exercise

Onebyone: your exhibition sounds great. Congratulations! Oh and it must be so nice to discover your ribs!

BBE: You are an inspiration. Congrats on the OP eating.

fyreflie24: Congrats on reaching "overweight." That is a big accomplishment

Gardnerjoy: Yay for plans!

Erika: Congrats on the running. Me too. I've started couch to 5k. Also Rachmaninoff recital--Excellent!

Maryann: here's to forward steps.

Pamatga: love the virtual walk challenge idea.

Diet Coaches/Buddies - Invited DW to join my walk, CREDIT moi. We were surprised to find almost no birds despite the feel of a warming spring day, with the major exception of a Common Loon on fresh water again - this is the season when they usually stay out on the ocean waiting for the fresh water to thaw.

Eating was on plan, CREDIT moi, until evening snack when I had extra fruit - Ouch! I gotta stop that; think I'll read and reread today's quote.

Joy (gardenerjoy) – LOL at 3rd Valentine's Day- that's unusual and super romantic. Neat to think of the period of Lent as a good time to drop the extra eating - I'm gonna steal that notion.

Erika (eusebius) – Ouch for having to fight your way from **** and back - glad you've found your way out. You've made me yearn to go listen to some Rachmaninoff and think about the sounds of Tibet.

Beverlyjoy – Touching thought of your neighbors in their cheerleading outfits to cheer you up. It's difficult to find a food plan in the midst of GI confusion.

Pam (pamaga) – Love the motivation of mapping miles walked to places in my state and reporting - you're so full of creative ideas. Glad that you continue to do well, despite a chocolate dip last night.

maryann - Yay for chicken noodle soup - life's universal cure. Green with the thought of picking oranges. We do get to occasionally pick apples around here and I always get that little kid feeling of joy when I take my first bite.

Donamari (fyreflie24) – Neat new Avatar! Speaking of artists, does your business slowly come back after the Christmas deluge and drop-off?

So why can't you made exceptions? The fact of the matter is our body processes calories in exactly the same way whether we are home or out, whether it’s a regular Monday or a holiday, whether we're working or on vacation. A calorie is a calorie, regardless of the situation in which you eat it. And if you make one exception, why not make more? Then you really put yourself at risk of gaining back weight. Just think: There are about 104 weekend days a year, not to mention the numerous holidays, anniversaries, birthdays, showers, weddings, parties, restaurant meals, fairs, conferences, meetings, special occasions, and vacation days.

Hi Everyone,

Back from the cruise and my weigt is up. No surprise there. Will do a much longer post later. Using the tablet now to post this and hate typing on it. The office desk is buried with everything from the suitcases as it's next to the laundry room and the mountain of dirty clothes. For a warm vacation we sure went thru a pile of clothing.

Am going to catch up on posts and check back later. Also need to go grocery shopping. I accidently left the fridge freezer compartment door slightly open and came home to a thawed mess but did not lose a lot of expensive food, mostly half filled bags of bread products, not sorrry to see them go.

Later

Just noticed I spelled weight wrong on the first line. Really wish I could find an arrow key on here that doesn't erase everything!

Morning coaches -

Great weighin this morning - back on track! I am so happy to have a completely OP day behind me.

Today is "Family Day" - a statutory holiday here in Ontario. We've decided to spend it taking our daughter to the Toronto Zoo, partly because we are cat-deprived and looking forward to seeing some majestic jaguars and leopards. This will result in some nice spontaneous exercise - a good bonus.

I ran this morning (restarting at Week 3 of Couch to 5K). Time for a smoothie now and I'll take a salad with me to the zoo.

maryann - kudos for lots of exercise and for taking care of yourself emotionally.

Beverlyjoy - sorry about the meds making you queasy - I know how that feels. Kudos for planning, planning and more planning!

Donamari - big congrats on reaching your goal of being no longer obese!! That's fabulous.

Pam - the walking challenge is very creative! It reminds me of the "Life's Odyssey" challenge I used to do on ediets.com where we sailed somewhere different every week. Hope you are feeling better soon!!

gardenerjoy - WTG on following your Valentine's plan!

maplover - I am so sorry about your mom. And I am super impressed that you are here telling us about your experience and getting yourself back on track - even starting Couch to 5K. THat is truly inspiring!!

BillBE - Cool to see a Common Loon on your walk! We usually just see them on loonies, LOL.

Tazzy - welcome back!! I hear you about typing on tablets - much prefer the laptop for posting. Hope you enjoyed the cruise - I'm sure the weight will go right back down before you know it.

Smoothie time! Have a great day, all!

Hi Becksters/coaches/friends....

First of all, I want to thank all of you for your continued support, good wishes, prayers, wisdom & kind thoughts in regards to my gallbladder & hernia (yes, they fixed a hernia too while they were in the neighborhood) surgeries last week. It means a great deal to me, for sure.

I am starting to get into a rhythm of sorts.. figuring out what I can eat and the best ways to heal and feel better. The literature says to start slowly adding 'regular' food back into your daily plan. Also - keep it very low fat at first. Frankly, these things all 'sound pretty familiar'. It's a work in progress. The main thing is to eat healthy food to heal well. I cannot do any exercise until I get the OK from the surgeon - makes sense.

I hope you all are having a GREAT day. Be kind to yourself.

Good Evening, All.

I worked most of the day on my 20 pg paper. DS is an angel and worked side by side own his on little projects. Food Planning was minimal. My only two goals were sitting down while eating and no chocolate. I was successful at both.

I read the heartfelt posts and viscerally understood it all - having gone through all the experiences mentioned. Glad everyone is speaking the truth. Glad everyone showed up today to write.

Best to all.

Hello Coaches/Buddies/Friends!

I'm working overtime despite a tired waitress/computer hand which is giving me some tingling and pain. Last eve after waitressing I spent 2 hrs on the phone trying to get old and new computer synched. I went to bed at 6 and slept until midnight when the brain could finish paperwork to give to mom so I might leave this afternoon after waitressing and head west to the hot springs. I'm thinking my hand/arm might love 5 days of soaking.

Yesterday I found myself wanting/starting to mindlessly snack/feed at work. I stopped several times and pitched 1/2 a (bad) sandwich after taking 2 bites. *credit* I had a med. bowl of chips after dinner (unplanned, too). I was still under my calorie allotment. *credit* for not starting an all out foodfest. Spontaneous exercise was walking back and forth to moms (with paperwork) in the bitter cold INSTEAD of driving.

Sending warm wishes to everyone as I head back to bed for a few more hours of rest.
~BBE, I'll dream of the loons conversing in the early dawn out my bedroom window in the chilly Alaskan (sea) water. (and yes, I think Lin is pretty cool)

Diet Coaches/Buddies - At gym (CREDIT moi) I use four sets of dumbbells. Uber joy was that I took three of the sets from the wrong locations in the rack and returned them to the correct locations without shifting others. Yay for distractions to amuse. The long walk got usurped when unexpected visitors dropped by and stayed for two hours. Yay for connections to humans; Ouch for loss of me-time.

Food was good enough, CREDIT moi, including leaving a bite at dinner which I've not been doing. It was mango couscous, a favorite, because it seems so exotic despite being, calorically, just tiny pasta.

Erika (eusebius) – Kudos for taking your own salad to the zoo. I still love zoos, but just like circuses, we don't get there so much with the kids grown.

Beverlyjoy – Seems like a sane approach, "The main thing is to eat healthy food to heal well" - keep on keeping on.

maryann - Congrats for working on your paper, and Kudos for doing it sticking to a plan of "no chocolate."

Tazzy - Yay for a successful cruise with the whole gang; you'll have the opportunity to work off that cruise-weight should winter ever arrive this year, LOL. I know that pain of trying to find the arrow keys on a new device.

Donamari (fyreflie24) – Sending supportive thoughts for you, your nephew, and your dad. Thank you for sharing your personal journey. I am struck by power of the word 'silence' in, "I learned that I fill my silence with food."

Making exceptions also can lead to obsessing about your decision. Should I make an exception for this party? Should I make an exception for that event? Sticking to a predetermined rule takes the struggle and pain out of dieting.

Morning coaches -

The zoo was lovely (and packed for Family Day). I restarted running at Week 3 of C25K and also got about 90 minutes of spontaneous walking at the zoo. Yay! Today: intense rehearsal with cellist coming up. I need to take lots of deep breaths and remember to surrender/get out of my own way while playing this crazy music. Staying in the moment is so hard sometimes. But it's crucial for so many things including this journey.

Beverlyjoy - wow, there was a hernia in there too? You are doing an amazing job taking care of yourself - keep up the great work!!

maryann - Sometimes it's important to keep our goals manageable and you did that, kudos!

Debbie (Lexxiss) - the hot springs sound fantastic and well deserved! Kudos for nipping mindless eating in the bud and spontaneous (chilly) exercise.

BillBE - Continued kudos for healthy eating & exercise despite unexpected visitors. I know you'll get that long walk in very soon.

Wishing a great day to all,
Erika

Thumbs up Surprise, surprise.

Hello Coaches

I have to say that I am enjoying the evenings more than anything else here in Key West. Think of the nicest summer evening and then imagine having that every night. That's how I think of it here, though I am told that in summer the temperature doesn't waver between daytime and night time and neither does the humidity. This weather is truly like the summer that is so fleeting where I live. I have actually added an extra month of summer to my life this year, even though it will be separated by the tail end of winter and that pesky spring in the middle.

And KUDOS to me for managing to stay on my foodplan during my stay here. I am most surprised by my weigh-in tonight: 264.6 (-1.8). This after going to a casino buffet, where I had one plate of mostly protein, then a second trip back for soup and a few, I mean like 3, breaded/fried things and then one piece of sugar-free dessert that I think was a big calorie bomb. I did walk a lot searching for a machine with a jackpot for me. Alas, I walked a lot .

And yesterday I effortlessly walked 4.5 hrs, heading deep into the throngs of tourists. THREE cruise ships were docked in port. Every one of them was taller than the roof of the 3 storey hotel at the waterfront. The call for tourists to board the ship was heard for blocks. I can't even imagine how big a loudspeaker, or how loud that must be if you were standing near it. As it was, I was a good three blocks away and it's as if it was an announcement over the PA in your local Kmart. Amazing.

I stayed away from the tourist stuff pre-exhibition and I was smart to listen to my intuition. I am so taken by that, so excited by the level of crowds that I would not have seen the little rocks, the coral, the local doorways, as much for the distractions of the moving crowd, the snippets of every kind of conversation and the sheer energy of this fast moving I'M ON VACATION tourist. On top of that it's spring break so there is a whole other level of frenzy. It's been 5 days since my exhibit and I haven't made anything so tomorrow must be a workday. I want to fully realize having printed all of my 29 days of February images here and not at home. I won't be happy if I let that happen so it's got to be back to work for me.

As for my weight/food, I am a mere 0.2lbs away from meeting my February goal of -25lbs. *almost* there. It was a squeaker today.
Basically I am striving for a 25lb loss every 3 months. I need to do that 5-6 times to reach my goal weight. At 261.4, 3 pounds from now, I meet a very important health goal of 10% down. I am going to re-double my efforts this week and see if I can't reach that on my next weigh-in. 3lbs is a lot to ask, but not if I am walking 2hrs everyday, which is very very easy to do here.

I'm sure going to miss this place.

Bye for now.

Hi Coaches/Buddies/Friends!

from the West side of the Continental Divide. It was a better day at work-too busy to eat...even my PBBBB sammie so the ingredients sat in my bag. We had a healthy snack on the way over and it occurred to me upon our arrival that it would be a perfect night not to cook and enjoy our multi-grain cereal instead of ordering pizza or driving through a fast food joint (not that we ever do that anymore, anyway). Tomorrow I'll soak in the pool and get some rest then get back to exercising.

BillBlueEyes, interesting how we organize our environment, even when we're away from home. Yay for leaving a bite.

Erika(eusebius), yes, patience helps in more than one venue.

ETA-onebyone, we cross posted. Congrats on a fantastic weigh in. You have me missing my brother and Key West. He lives on Atlantic Ave.

Diet Coaches/Buddies - A day of just barely good enough eating, CREDIT moi. I was over on afternoon and evening snacks. I need a new card, Food doesn't do Taxes.

onebyone – Love your description of "I'M ON VACATION tourist" - frightening thought of three ships full of them descending on a small town. Two hours of walking a day sounds like heaven.

Erika (eusebius) – Thanks for "Staying in the moment is so hard sometimes" - don't know why drifting away happens to me so often. By-the-by, we heard a live cellist holding the cello between her knees instead of on the spike on the ground - new to me.

Debbie (Lexxiss) – Continue to drool with every mention of your PBBBB sammie.

I wish it were different. I wish I didn't have to be so careful every day. But I do (and so do all successful maintainers). And most of the time, I just don't think much about it because I know that the advantages of maintaining my weight are so much greater that the momentary pleasure of eating more on a special occasion.

Morning coaches

Another good day. My commitment is holding and rereading the pink book is helping to shore it up. The scale is inching down, for which I'm grateful. And food fog and fatigue are starting to abate with the healthy diet and exercise. Planning the next day's food the night before has been a very successful tactic.

Today: Week 3 Day 2 of C25K. My morning choir rehearsal was cancelled, so I get an extra couple of hours to enjoy my coffee & knitting, yay!

onebyone - yay for an extra month of summer and congrats on your continued weight loss success!

Debbie (Lexxiss) - glad you had a better day at work. Soaking in the pool sounds lovely.

BillBE - LOL at Food Doesn't Do Taxes. I've noticed it doesn't practice or clean the house, either. Interesting about the cellist - I wonder how she stays tension-free that way. (Maybe she doesn't…)

Time to enjoy my unexpected free time! I've started reading Andre Agassi's autobiography … quite interesting stuff.

to all!

Wishing everyone a great Wednesday,
Erika

Hi folks.... my computer is not working very well. My laptop won't stay on. My desk top compter is sad. I'll try and post when I can.

I am eating different things. Tomorrow I see the surgeon and I hope I can drive.

Take care...thanks for all your support.
