It's the last beautiful prolonged moment of summer ... already the days are a bit shorter, the nights can turn a bit crisp, hinting of what's to come, and the back-to-school advertisements no longer feel premature.

There's still time to move our bodies and breathe fresh outdoor air.

So join us as we log our exercise for the month of August.

Glad to hear some love for this month's picture. I thought it was a good one, too, and spoke to all the ways in which we can choose to move our bodies.

Friday, August 2nd:

60 minutes elliptical, random intervals, resistance at nine, alternating forward & backward, and unfortunately feeling a twinge of plantar fasciitis in my left foot. And I thought the once- or twice-a-week runs had been remarkably injury free.
60 minutes back & bicep routine.

Someone was on the StairMaster this morning during my usual time. Go away for a week on vacation & this is what I get when I come back ;-)

Saef, I love the motivation inherent in that 4-part image you posted for August, but do you realized it's been photoshopped? 3 of the component images have been compressed vertically to make the women appear taller and thinner than reality. The distortion is especially egregious in the last panel (the woman in the red shirt). I tell you this not to take away from the "fitspiration" but to bring to conscious notice the manipulation of our emotions that is a constant undercurrent in much of today's media.

Andrea, I was looking for an image with a woman doing a lot of varied exercises. Runners are easier to find but not an image with many activities. I think I just take for granted that these kinds of pictures are populated by fitness models who are likely photoshopped.

It's past midnight, I need to go to bed, but this is what happened at the gorgeous and exceptionally well-equipped gym at the Ritz-Carlton in Grande Lakes, Orlando. (And since I've been living in Hotel/Convention Center Land, I really don't know what today's date is, or what happened in the larger world while I was basically sequestered.)

Tuesday: At my gym at home, 30 minutes Stairmaster, then just about 60 minutes chest, shoulders & triceps, then had to go home & shower, finish packing and get to the airport. Once at the hotel, off to that gym to finish up my weight routine and finish out the 30 minutes, this time on the elliptical.
Wednesday: 60 minutes on the elliptical, delighted that it was exactly the same model as at my gym at home, resistance at nine, random intervals, hard to push, pool of sweat on the floor from the Florida humidity
Thursday: 60 minutes on the arc trainer, resistance at nine, hill intervals, another pool of sweat on the floor afterward
Friday: Just 60 minutes of back & bicep work, no cardio, I feel GUILTY

Okay, and I totally understand now why no one in Florida should be outdoors running in August. The humidity stunned me. I have never before experienced anything like it. (Keep in mind though that I've never traveled anywhere near the equator.)

Saturday, August 10th:

60 minute spin class, with weight and resistance band intervals

Saef, are you stretching your calves? I have to do both calf and soleus as part of my niggly-SI-joint coping strategy. I do each for a minute, both legs - and then I do it again. That's 8 minutes very well spent, in my book.

Birchie, yes, I stretched my calves yesterday, used a foam roller, dug the edge of a foam block into the sore spot, and they feel a bit better today. My hamstrings apparently tightened up from walking all day & through the airport toting luggage while wearing heels. I don't usually wear heels for that long, and it was four straight days of them. My hamstrings apparently got very tight and that led to a cramp in my calf so severe that the muscle visibly spasmed and I screamed out in Pilates class.

It's feeling a little better now, and the best thing is, I've had no problem at night in bed. I was afraid I might wake with a cramp. I will stretch again tonight just before bedtime.

August 17: home from Arizona and I went to bikram. It was so hard! I think it was a combination of 3 days of not doing yoga, the travel, the heat in Arizona, and the high amounts of sodium and fat in my unplanned foods. I was hoping to sweat some of it out but it didn't go as planned. I got HOT and didn't sweat for awhile. I had trouble with some of the poses too.

August 18: much better day today at bikram. I did one class at 11 am and it was awesome. I felt strong and much better than yesterday. Friday, Aug. 23rd:

Still trying to rest my inner right arm, so no back & biceps lifting today.
60 minutes StairMaster. This killed me. I started out at resistance of nine, hands-free, which I managed for 30 minutes. Then 10 more minutes with my hands on the rails. Then for the last 20 minutes, dropped it to eight and held the rails unashamedly, with two half-minute breaks.

Sunday, Aug. 25th:

45 minute spin class, challenging myself more than usual
Squats on the smith machine, adductor machine, hamstring curls

Feeling very much at a loss without my lifting routine. I should feel freed up, with more time available to me, but instead I feel weaker and more impotent. I think my arm feels a little better, but not as well as I'd hoped.

Monday, Aug. 26th:

Ran 4.27 miles on the usual path, with my changing, jouncy gait, which rarely feels quite right, whether downhill, uphill or on the level. Passed a group of local prep school athletes out on a run, which tells me school's in session, or very nearly so.

I'm a real wimp compared with the rest of you here! But comparisons are such a waste of time so I just admire you all and plod along. My dream is to become as fit as I was a few years ago but without the ever-building injuries. I'm definitely on the right road.

Wow. Still working diligently toward this on the assisted pullup machine. (I had to take last week off to rest my right arm.) I will get to this, but on my own time. My heavier body weight probably makes it tougher.

Anyway, back to weights today:

30 minutes Stairmaster, intervals, resistance at nine, a tough slog, trying to focus on stepping on my midfoot, not toe
60 minutes chest, shoulders & triceps routine

Tuesday - travelling but I've managed to get 8.7k steps in. That's 5.5km or 3.4 miles so quite good. It was an amble round an Elizabethan (C16th) house and gardens plus a quick trot round a C15th town whilst waiting for a takeaway.

The dog lovers will like this next bit.

I've been saying that the DB is like a big dog who needs regular food and walks. Tonight he said I should think of myself like that and took me off round this lovely town. Good. I'll take all encouragement.

Wednesday, Aug. 28th:

60 minutes arc trainer, resistance upped to 10, hill intervals, and this felt pretty good, though I sweated so much that I looked like I'd been hosed off. It was the high humidity levels -- the gym had shut off the airconditioning and just opened a door.

Jen, you are an athlete in training. You are exerting discipline. It is the opposite of your fears, which, if they're like mine, are always: "Okay, this is it. This is the beginning of the end for me. My will has failed, I will never be able to regain control again, ever, and I am now going to lose all my thin, athletic privileges & my great life that I've built for myself & become a fat woman all over again." That's just fear, that's not the truth. You are an athlete in training doing what athletes always do to perform well. If you had never been fat before, like some fortunate athletes, this would be a different story. But for us, doing stuff like this feels really fraught with danger. When it isn't because athletes do this all the time -- you know what marathon runners look like, right? And they don't look like our worst fears for ourselves at all. You will be okay. You've got this.

Saturday - 90 mins mowing lawn (long grass again) with push mower, raking and moving hedge trimmings with my newly inherited hay fork. It must be about 70 years old and has been in my mum's greenhouse for at least 10. I've cleaned it up and oiled it with linseed oil. It's good to use.

Thanks so much saef! As always, you are so correct about my craziness. In addition, it's like if I don't maintain my routine "the truth" will be revealed - that I am a complete phony and this house of cards will tumble.

I can't fathom the internal strength it must take for professional athletes to deal with injuries and set-backs when their livelihood depends on it!

At any rate: race bib picked up, 60 minutes yoga completed, whole wheat pasta eaten, clothes laid out, Garmin and MP3 player charged - I think I'm ready! Let's hope Mr. Achilles agrees come 7AM!
