Hey Jan,

What about those 1 minute ones? I get those without the flavor sometime. They just seem more ground up than the 5 minute one. I don't eat the flavored ones because I like plain oatmeal.

Hi Equinata,

Thanks for "weighing in" on the oatmeal saga. Are you referring to the regular oats in the canister that cook in 1 minute as opposed to 5? If so, they are my second favorite for versatility next to the 5 minute ones. They have a texture that is between the 5 minute ones and the actual instant variety. They serve the same purpose for the reasons why I prefer those to instant and I like those too. They also microwave better then the slower 5 minute type, so it's a great compromise without all the sodium & sugar.

I used to eat the instant Quaker Multi Grain W/Pecans and that was my favorite for a long time. Very hearty for an instant and not as mushy because of the multi grains. I got them free from my Mom who used to be a demo person in the grocery store, she got to keep the leftovers! It's expensive though and the sugar is high so once I finished those all last year I never bought them.

I am out of work right now and so I have the time to prepare the 5 minute type and clean up the messy pot. Once I return to work I might adjust my choice! I do make two servings at a time though now and refrigerate the second one for another day. Still pretty good heated in the micro.

Making a couple batches of things has been really helpful for me. Black beans & brown rice, chili, salad, cut up veggies. I can easily grab any of those in full or as part of my meal. I have my onions and peppers cut up so when I want to add them to a recipe or in an omelet etc. I don't have to chop them every time, I do this about once a week. I put together a big bowl of salad about every three days depending on if the family is partaking. It gives me enough for 1-2 meals a day for the 3 days depending on whether I am having a salad as a side or as a meal with protein.

Anyway, just more tips from me. Take from them what you need and disregard the rest!

Hello Ladies,

Hey Jan those are the ones I am talking about. I don't like the instant either then. I needed to be clear that the regular oats that take 1 minute where not considered the instant kind. You and I are alike with preparation. I prepare every food I can ahead of time. Takes me to Sunday's sermon "Ready Feels Good" preparation is key! All of you ladies who have not tried to prepare your meals ahead of time should try it to truely understand how "Ready Feels Good". No worries just grab and heat up with no battle of the minds to get in the kitchen and cook.

Good Morning Ladies, :coffee2:

Equinata,

Because I am so detailed about everything I always thought I would be a great book writer. I also drag things out in stories when I'm telling them so doing an suspense or dramatic type book would probably work well for me! Hey, have I found my new career? Epiphany....I am going to be a writer! LOL

:idea::blah::write::comp:

I say all this as I am eating my 5 minute oatmeal this morning! Yummy!

:goodscale I weighed in this morning for the end of my 9 Day (Modified) Phase 1. I only lost 1.2 lbs. I say the word "modified" because I stayed with all of the Phase 1 foods but added in a protein (meat) just once a day. I also ate some bad things during this time also. I'm not at all surprised that I didn't do better as I was not faithful and also chose to modify the plan. I really feel if I go back to the Phase 1 as written for just one more round I will have better success. So that's my goal for the next 9 days.

I know that a lot of you ladies checking in had also started with me after the New Year on Phase 1 and should be ready to weigh in as well. How did you all do? Were you able to stick to the plan? What are your goals going forward?

Hope you all have a good day.

Hey Jan,

Sounds like a new career to me. LOL Congrats on the loss. It's always better than none. You know me. The scale is the same, and I'm sure it will stay that way for a while.

i am back. I lost about 9 lbs, I think my scale might be messed up though. Cause I only excercised like two days and I had a day or two of bad eating. I don't know. I know today didn't help. But I tried the biggest loser weight loss dvd. It was interesting to say the least. School is kicking my butt. 8 o'clock classes too many days.

Thanks for the responses ladies.

Can we have tomato sauce in phase one? I'm looking at the stuffed green peppers recipe in the FS recipe forum and it looks awesome. Don't have enough posts to post links.

life4evr
01-14-2010, 07:43 PM
Fiona24 the salt content in the tomato sauce would probably be the only problem. Also sugar if it is in there.

Hi Ladies,

Sorry to be absent around here. I had my birthday yesterday (the 16th) and was doing different things for a few days out and about.

Hi Equinata,

How are you doing? Are you still on the maintenance portion of the EFS? Anything new with you?

Life4ever,

Well I certainly hope that your scale is correct because if it is, you did awesome! Sometimes we are just lucky to get a good week for what seems like no particular reason. Then on the other hand, we can have a week or Phase where we feel we did all the right things and still stayed the same or lost a smidge. I think I would just see how your next weigh in goes and see if the scale still is telling the same story. Also go to the grocery store or somewhere they have a public scale and do a comparison. If your scale is telling the truth, then the scale somewhere else should not be off by too much. No two scales are exactly the same and there are different factors that can affect that, like the calibration, or at home, even the batteries! Let us know how you do but for now I would say "Congratulations"!

Fiona24,

How are you doing with your Phase? Are you still on one? I agree about the sauce answers. You really need to read the labels for the sodium and sugars. I got cans of tomatoes with "no salt added" diced, sauce, & paste to make my own. This way I regulated those things. Of course it still needs salt and possibly some sugar or sweetener to cut the acidity but it would not usually be as bad as a ready made jar sauce......and you can use it for other things too like on brown rice spaghetti, eggplant "parmesan", or as a base for chili.

If you are not into cooking like that then check out one I used to get, it's the Ragu Light Tomato and Basil....I can't remember what the nutritional facts were so you will have to look at them. Since I started this diet I have made my own but before this I used to buy that one and seemed to think it wasn't too bad. Then again I wasn't watching sodium or sugars as closely! Good luck and let us know how things went.

Ok Ladies, I really need to get some sleep. This whole going out for my birthday thing has thrown me off. Went to the casino Friday night and didn't get home in bed until 3:00am.....did I say it was my birthday? Well yes I did, and I'm too darn old to be staying out that late! I slept in this morning (Saturday) and so my whole day was thrown off. Now it's 2:30am and I'm still up on here! Geez Louise, I need to go to bed. Good Night Ladies!

Hi Ladies,

Equinata,

Thank you for the belated wishes. The way I look at it is someone is wishing you belated wishes then that just continues the celebration! I really appreciate the wishes and am glad I met you on here.

I have been interacting with another girl on here but from my (Pumpkin Muffin) recipe post. I gave her the link and said although we are a small group we will try to answer any questions she might have. In case she comes over here, her username is Capelover11. She tried my muffins and liked them! She said her roommates kept eating them even though they are not on diets! I told her I knew I had a hit when my husband kept taking them to work!

What's new with you? Anything interesting going on? Not much activity on here lately. Kind of got stagnate again around the holidays and really has not picked up much. I started back on my other website and team last week. It's either feast or famine for me on these 2 websites. Here it's deader then a door nail and there I have a team of about 15 or so ladies that are on all the time that I should be responding too. It amazes me how some of the ladies will post and can address each ones past post individually. That is just so time consuming! I read through the posts and if there is something that stands out then of course I will address it but it's just too much doing that everyday with every person!

Speaking of the other website, I have not been on there yet this morning so I need to hop over and show myself! Hope all is going well with you.

Hello Life4evr and Fiona24...how are you doing with you goals?

Hope you all have a good day!

Hey Ladies

Jan, I've started cycle one over again so I hope to be reporting some loses soon. I'm hoping to lose at least 12 pounds this time around. I need to get your links for your recipes so I can try them for myself. Its great that your other site is motivating to a point of being overwhelming. I'm off to make me a protein smoothie for dinner because I'm tired and plan to check into bed early tonight, plus I don't like to eat after 7pm.

See ya ladies tomorrow!

Hi Ladies,

Even though I have started on the other website as part of a team I have not forgot about you! The odd thing is that I was doing better before I decided to join over there again! It's a matter of choices, good over bad and I have been making bad choices regardless.

Equinata & Life4evr,

I hope you will both see the scale moving now that you have started the beginning phase again. I too am doing the same thing.

Gave myself a break for the holidays....BIG mistake. Started back on Phase 1 on the 4th of this month....only I decided to modify it to include one daily serving of lean meat. Problem is I also added other things along the way, just a bite of this a piece of that. I then started Phase 1 again....but my birthday was approaching and so blown again. I have gained almost a lb this last week. I have gone to the grocery store and have what I need in the house to "get back to basics"....what I need now is the WILL again!

Hope you both are able to find your will and motivation to follow your plan and achieve results. I'll check back in after the weekend.

Hello Ladies
I know things will get better we have to just stay in the game off of the sidelines. I found my will power again it's giving good results today I hit 189 and it has been years since I seen a number like that. If I can do it I know you ladies can rock this fatsmash diet and the closer you get to your goals the more your will power will kick in full gear.

Happy Weekend!

hey ladies, i'm doing the FS for the second time, pre-menopausal me wasn't getting anywhere on my own. i'm glad to see the support out there. i swear i haven't cheated!, but i only lost 5.5 on the detox and then gained 2.5. i didn't move on to phase II though, so i'm wondering if that was an error.

anyway, moving on and downward, i hope.

Has anyone had coffee on phase 1?

Hi Suga, :welcome:

The ladies you see on here now are not the ones responsible for starting this thread but Equinata and I have kept it going. Through the times when others have come and gone we have continued checking in and hoping for "new life" to come in. This has happened twice since this thread was started. We are happy to have you hear and will support you the best we can!

When you were on 3FC before were you on the FS Diet or another? Glad you are having a better day with your FS Diet then the last few. Some days are better than others, the first few are sometimes the toughest.

I am on my third round of Phase 1. When I started this program in November I did Phase 1 back to back....I don't recommend that! It's challenging enough trying to find new ways to make things to start with, try doing it all over again when you are already bored with the food choices! LOL I am repeating it now only because I made it to Phase 3 then took a couple weeks off to go through the holidays. I did pay for that in the way of a 2 1/2 lb gain but this is why I am repeating the cycle again.

I will say to you what I have said to others, (and you may know this already), planning is important and creativity is the key! If you try to plan some things out in advance by even making batches of things and refrigerating/freezing them it makes it so much easier to make the right choices. Grabbing anything when you are tired, busy, or just plain "don't feel like preparing something" is too easy, but detrimental to what we are trying to do. If you can mix it up enough, be creative with the foods allowed, then you will breeze through Phase 1 and know you can continue onto Phase 2 with success as well when more food is added.

Most of the ladies are on the original Fat Smash and are repeating Phase 1 again after the holidays. Equinata, my great support on here, is on the Extreme Fat Smash Plan. She has been a trooper moving through the cycles of her plan, even through the holidays! Equinata, where are you these days on your plan?

If you have any questions please ask away and we'll do our best to answer them and be supportive.

Hi Equinata, Life4evr, and Beautiful9800........how are all of you doing today? Having any challenges or flying right through it with ease? Let us know!

Hey Ladies
Yes my update on my EFS plan, I'm back on cyle 1 and the weight is dropping but you ladies know that I stall for weeks then one day the scale scares me being down so much. I stepped on it today and it read 189 but I will have to see that for a few more days to believe it. I've also turned into a work ouit bunny and its paying off. This diet seems like my way of living these days. I don't miss foods and when I had the chance to have the things I wanted I did, but couldn't each much of it. LOL funny isn't that. I've been at this for years and 2009 I finally made up in my mind that I will reach my goal weight and will not look back.

Much success to all of you ladies.

Okay. I am restarting tomorrow. I have a plan for real this time. Since I never seem to wake up in time to eat before I leave for class, not a morning person. So I have some packs of plain instant oatmeal. I think I will just take that with me, get some hot water from the cafeteria and eat this. Because that trying to eat before I left the house at 7 is not working for me. I don't know I am just getting really frustated with everything.

life4ever, try making the oatmeal banana cookies and take them to go in the morning. i'm including the recipe here, but i found it on the previous smash fat site. i suggest mixing everything together except the oats, smashing etc, then mix in the oats.

misskitty

SF Oatmeal cookies
1 cup uncooked (old fashioned) oatmeal
1/4tsp salt
1 ripe mashed banana..the riper the better
1 egg white (or 1/4 cup egg sub)
2 packets of Splenda
1 Tblsp of cinnamon (I personally find this is too much)
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1/8 tsp almond flavoring (I don't have this, so don't use it)
Mix the ingredients together and spoon by tablespoon onto cookie sheet (I spray with Pam) cook 10 -15 minutes in 350 degree preheated oven, makes about 9 cookies.

Red Diablo - No one on her is doing the 4 day diet, but tell us more about to see if it is similar just shorter.

I am happy that you all decided to join us on our journey. Lets get the smashing and helping one another climb those mountains.

misskitty

the headaches can also be from ditching caffeine, if you had to do that. when i quit caffeine, i had a migraine for four days.

for the oats, 1 cup of oats dry is approximately 2 cups cooked, so with one banana and 1 egg white, you're still within the daily limits. i also eat these for breakfast, or for that afternoon/evening snack when i must have something sweet! one recipe makes about 9 cookies or so, so you can eat all of them, if you need to.;)

for the four day diet, you can look in the threads for EFS (Extreme Fat Smash), you might find someone doing that.

Have you all tried the pizza recipe w/chickpeas? it sounds disgusting, but i could eat it every day. I also got this recipe from the last SF thread. The trick is to prebake and let it get hard-ish. Then take it out and put on the toppings. I have stirfried peppers and onions, or in Phase II, you can add some meat to the top (I'm vegetarian, so I don't). Anyway, it isn't bread, but it looks like bread and doesn't taste like chickpeas and it has that 'crunch' that I'm missing from crackers and toast. Again, this is Phase I friendly and in the old version of the book, I was allowed 2 cups of cooked oatmeal per day (about 1 cup dry), so I could eat the whole pizza in one sitting! (but sadly, I started to get full sooner than I used to, so if I have half left, I break it up into pieces and use them as crackers for ff yogurt and salsa dip, or for hummus).

Pizza Crust:
1 cup oatmeal
1/2 can of garbanzo beans (chickpeas)
1 egg white
>1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
basil, oregano, crushed red pepper, italian seasoning, garlic salt,
to taste [I use italian seasoning on top of the cheese (Phase II) and it smells like a pizzeria!]

Blend ingredients in blender/food processor until smooth. You may
add a little water to loosen up ingredients. However, make sure to
keep mixture like a dough-like consistency.

Bake in oven at 400 degrees until edges lift off from pan and the
crust looks cracked.

thanks for asking, so far, ok. 3 weeks into the new regime, in Phase II, and down 9 pounds. approaching that time of the month though, so it's getting harder not to imagine sitting down with a big bag of M&Ms.... my kids are complaining that they can't stand eating this healthy! i told them it will be until at least end of April, and they almost fainted. :p

it's so cold here that it's crazy to even walk the dog, so all exercise is videos, the treadmill, and weights.

i made roasted veggies tonight w/brown rice and tofu, but i put too much oil on the veggies, and boy did they taste gross! my son has a fever of 103+ this weekend, and he's been eating ice cream. i 'accidently' had a taste :o, and oh my!, it's so SWEET! i can't believe i ever thought that it wasn't that sweet at all!

with valentine's day coming , tell your honey not to buy you candy - no sabotage allowed! i'm looking forward to a set of four new placemats instead. what a life we lead!!!:carrot:

I am starting the Fat Smash Diet tomorrow for the first time and hope it goes well. I need to learn to change some of my eating habits so hopefully this is a start. I wish I had someone to work out with but I figured I will get some exercise tapes due to Iowa being so cold right now I will freeze my bottom off walking. Any words of wisdom or any advice for the diet. I joined the gym last year and didn't really lose weight but got toned so hopefully I can do this on my own.

Hello Ladies,

Welcome Lori the only advise that I know means a lot is plan, plan, plan ahead. This will keep you from making the bad choices.

Misskitty, congrats on the 9lb loss. I had my daughter and husband eat what I was eating until my wilpower increased. I used to spice things up - I would make them friend brown rice by sautee onions first then adding in the cooked brown rice with some soy sauce. I would add veggies or meats occassionaly to the rice. After, a while they looked forward to tasting what I was eating and didn't want their individual stuff anymore. Still to this day they tell me that I eat like a rich person and they eat like the peasants. LOL That's because I have to be creative with my food so I can continue to eat the right things for my body. They will get use to it. Now my husband do not like ground beef and loves ground lean turkey or white rice and loves brown rice and those where the things he complained about the most when I converted them. LOL My daughter on the other hand can deal with everything except the wheat bread... that she just will not stand for, but I fooled her by buying white wheat bread...

the good news is: i have one of those scales that does the water, fat and weight, and i went from 43% to 41.6% fat in these three weeks!

i can't answer your question about the EFS vs FS, i've only done FS.

for lunch or snacks:
i made a broccoli soup (i did add two potatoes, which are not on any phases), but it adds thickening so that we don't need cream, milk, etc. one whole head of broccoli, some veggie broth/flavoring w/water to cover, one leek (or onion) and the potatoes. cook down until all veggies are soft, then blend together (i have one of those hand blenders). it's very tasty, no fat.

refried no fat beans, no fat plain yogurt and salsa in a bowl, with the crackers that i make from the pizza crust (see recipe below).

or the SF granola w/no fat plain or flavored yogurt.

if you like middle eastern food, look up lentil rice pilaf and find something called mjadara (it's spelled differently in different places). i made it last night and could have eaten the whole bowl! it calls for 4 tbsp of oil to make a 4 serving amount, but i think the oil could be cut down a lot.

any kind of soup off the shelf.

fruit all the time, any time. the clementines now are easy to take to go, grapes are easy... i find it hard to eat so much fruit b/c i've always counted calories, but not now!

home on the weekend, make that pizza! it's so satisfying and crunchy, not like eating fruits and veggies!

now, for me, I go up and down, and up and down, it's making me crazy!!! last night i wanted that bag of M&Ms in the cupboard so badly ... i was probably 50% on my way to sitting down with it!!:o

peace and calm, luck to us!

Smash Fat Granola (recipe from the other SF forum)
1 cup oatmeal, dry, not quick oats
1 egg white *remember you can use 'Just Whites' found in the baking section if you don't want to waste eggs, although my dog loves the yolks mixed in with his food
1 teaspoon oil
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla * i find this to be a little much, i'd cut it down by half
Mix it up and spread on a cookie sheet. Bake for 8 minutes at 300 degrees. Stir it up again and bake it for another 8 minutes or until it lightly browned and crunchy.

Another question. When they list the menu for the day (like a cup of beans) are you supposed to eat just that as your meal or are you supposed to use a recipe in the back of the book that incorporates that ingredient (minus any of the forbidden foods from that cycle)? Or are the recipes more for the later stages and maintenance stage ?

misskitty
02-03-2010, 08:29 PM
again, if you're talking about EFS vs FS, i don't know. but for FS, i would eat as much as what was permitted (i.e. fruits/veggies), but if one cup of beans were allowed, then i might mix black beans w/cut up tomatoes and green peppers, some cumin and a little red wine vinegar and make a 'salad' out of it. combine, cook, whatever you need to do. you'll find that many foods that you might have eaten otherwise are okay with just a little tweaking.

look online for vegetarian recipes for the first phases of the diet. that can give you some ideas.

Hello Ladies,

Welcome Razz, I am doing the Extreme Fat Smash and I love it. You will adjust to eating more frequently but alot less. Soon you will be tired of eating. You are able to add back the sandwiches in cycle 2 which is the second week. The recipes in the back or for maintenance really. You have to be creative about how you prepare your foods so you do not get sick and tired of them. Utilize your snacks of 100 calories or less if you are still feeling hungry they will help until you adjust.

I am on day 4, I had a cheat, and yes it was a conscious one, but not enough for me to have to start all over again. I have managed to avoid the icecream in the freezer. Does anyone know where the recipes from the other forum went? I did the biggest loser weight lose yoga dvd since I didn't have time to go the gym.

so, my son had his confirmation this past weekend, and we celebrated, so i consciously ate a little of the 'bad foods' from Thursday through Super Bowl Sunday. I didn't overeat it though, and I kept exercising, so hopefully it won't come back to haunt me too badly. it was actually interesting - i wasn't 'moved' to overeat, and i got fuller, faster. whenever i get done with the weight loss this time around, i think the FS diet teaches us to eat less, and pay attention to when we feel full.

for the question on the whey protein, it's a dairy product, yes? i wouldn't think it would be against the rules unless it contains fat.

oh, by the way, did you know that snow shoveling for 3 hours burns 1450 calories!? happily, i cheated the weekend that the snow storm came, so i've been exercising AND shoveling... and now, another 6-10" on the way.

Hi everyone,
I am planning on starting FS on the 13th of this month. I am not a newbie to FS... BUT, it has been 4 years since I was on the diet. I was a daily poster on the old FS thread here on 3FC. If any of you want some recipe ideas... you can still search the forum and find the FS recipe thread. There are a lot of good ideas there. Just wanted to throw that info out in case you all didn't know about it.

Actually, here is a link to the old forum:

http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/fat-smash-diet-211/

There is some pretty good info on there. ;)

Now, back to me. lol. I lost weight on FS before. DH lost a lot more than me. But, don't they always? We moved to another state back then and got off the diet. Now, I am ready to start again. I weigh more now than I did when I started FS 4 years ago. UGH! But, I know it works.

I hope I can get to know you all. I will be here every day with "something" to say. lol. It may not be very interesting....but, I found out the last time I did FS... daily posting helps keep me motivated and accountable.

Hi missjkd,

Here is an answer to your question from a Q&A with Dr. Ian.....

QUESTION: Is Whey Protein allowed? I like to use whey protein (EAS-Chocolate Flavored) as a base for my strawberry smoothie for breakfast.

ANSWER: Protein powders and supplements have been largely untested, especially with there being so many brands and varieties. If you decide to add protein powders to you shakes, you need to make sure it is healthy protein and the product's manufacturer and their claims are reputable.

Kinda vague, but that is all I could find. Hope that helps!

Sherry

P.S. I don't want to seem like I am just jumping in and trying to take over the group....but, what do you ladies think about having a "weekly" Fat Smash thread? I think it would be easier to keep up with and weed out all of the previous smashers who aren't posting anymore. Just a thought. We used to start a new weekly thread every Monday. And we also had a weekly weigh in thread. Just some ideas.....

Hi Equinata,

Thanks for the welcome! Since it's been 4 years since I did FS...I'm sure you ladies have plenty to share with me. lol!

I am starting my shopping list today. Tomorrow is shopping day. Dh is going to do the diet with me again. We could both stand to lost a few lbs. And it's easier when I don't have to cook a different meal for me.

I am so excited and ready to begin detox. I can still remember how hard it was, but also how good I felt after it was over. Man, the first 3 or 4 days almost killed me. I thought I was starving to death! lol. And I drink diet cokes and I will have to stop them again. I can already feel the caffeine and nutrasweet withdrawals. UGH! :yikes:

I hope you all have a great day!

I did the FS about four years ago and forgot alot of stuff. I have all three of the books FS, EFS and the 4 day diet. I have been on so many diets over the past four to five years and here I site still trying to get the same 22 pounds off. If I would just stick to something I'd probably get it off but thats where my problems lays. I'm good for about a week and then the sugar monster comes out. I do remember how good I felt doing FS so after looking over all three books plus about 10 other diet books I have decided on doing FS again but need to clear up somethings so I know I'm doing it correctly 100%. The one cup oatmeal is that uncooked or cooked? I don't like the texture of oatmeal so I make the cookies and it is so convient. Sweet Potatoes are they unlimited or limited? Egg whites limited or unlimited? I use about 1/4 to 1/2 cups egg whites for my oatmeal cookies so I didn't know if that goes toward the 4 egg white limit. Garden burgers contain brown rice so how do we measure the 2 cups were allowed along with the garden burgers? Limit on popcorn, can't remember the limit. I'm sorry for all the questions as I have looked over my book and old posts but can't find the answer to these questions. I remember when I was on FS there was a great message board for FS followers but due to Dr.Ian's lawyers the board had to be closed, it was such a great resource. I really really want to stick with this and follow thru to finally get this weight off for good:D

Hello Ladies,

Misskitty it is good that your cheat was a conscious one so you did not over due it. What was the outcome?

so far so good, but it doesn't usually show up for two weeks after. that's why it can take so long to begin seeing a weight loss when we begin - it doesn't show on the scale right away, another reason for not weighing ourselves until day 9 of phase 1.

i am combining phase 1 during the day with some of phase 2 and 3 for dinners. it seems to be working out ok, since it allows me more flexibility for dinner. still shoveling!

Hi sluggo,

remember that the sugar comes back to us in the form of fruit! not the same, i know, but appreciate the sweetness of the grapes - that always gets me!

Garden burgers contain brown rice so how do we measure the 2 cups were allowed along with the garden burgers? Limit on popcorn, can't remember the limit.

for the oatmeal, 2 cups cooked per day, same for rice.
i believe sweet potatoes are unlimited, but again, variety is what he's looking for, i think.
for egg whites, in the old version of the book, none were allowed in phase 1, but now 4 are allowed per day. the cookies only take 1 egg white per batch, but that would be all the oatmeal allowed per day (1 cup raw = about 1 3/4 cups cooked), so this shouldn't be a problem.
i might count 1/2 cup cooked rice per gardenburger.
for popcorn, FS the old version didn't even list popcorn as an option, but i cook 1/4 cup raw with a small blurb of canola oil (maybe 1 tsp?).

i think the main points of phase 1 are 1. stay away from fat, 2. learn portion control, 3. get away from the huge 'sweet tooth' that Americans havee, 4. cut fat out to detox/shock the system.

have fun! :dizzy:

misskitty

ok, so, what to do with an orange, red, yellow pepper? maybe a white onion or two? FAJITAS! :carrot:

i borrowed this recipe from online, then changed it a bit:

1 tablespoon bottled hot sauce
3 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Mix the above ingredients (taste for spice preferences). Add the liquid from a can of beans (I used black beans) to the ingredients. Set aside.

Stir fry any vegetables that you like in a fajita. You can use very little oil to do this. One trick is to add a little canola oil in the pan, start the stir fry, and then add a little water at a time if they start to dry out. When the veggies are done, add and mix in the beans to warm them, with the liquid from the fajita mix.

To serve, especially on phase 1, use non fat plain yogurt instead of sour cream, and serve on brown rice if desired. It can be a plate of fajita instead of rolled up in a tortilla, or I use corn (not flour) tortillas because we're allowed corn, but not flour for most of the phases. Remember, no avocados for a long while... so no guacamole.

Don't use any cheese until phase 2, but with the non fat plain yogurt, that can give it a tang, and the mix is spicy!

This recipe can be adjusted for any members of the family. I serve corn tortillas for me and my daughter (she is gluten free), flour for my son and husband. And on phase 1, no tortilla, perhaps.... One other way to serve it to mix it up with the rice, and to use the pizza recipe (posted here) but cooked and then broken up as crackers.

Enjoy!

I ordered the Extreme Fat Smash but I need to do the shopping today - besides fruits and vegetables, what else do I need for the first 7 days?

let's see...

a variety of fruits and veggies, and the sweeter ones can help in the beginning: grapes, apples, sweet potatoes, butternut squash

oatmeal (not quick oats)
brown rice
egg white (Just Whites is the product i use, in the baking aisle, or there are liquid egg whites)
chickpeas, if you want to make the pizza crust
bananas (for the cookies)

salsa, non fat plain yogurt (good for a 'mexican dip')

herbal, fruit teas

applesauce is good for a sweet tooth

no fat milk

low/no fat vegetarian 'meat' products (frozen foods)

no fat pizza sauce for the spaghetti squash or chickpea pizza

there is a vegetarian rice 'parmesan' that has practically no fat

raw popcorn

no fat salad dressing

i have a recipe for rice pilaf w/arborio rice that uses onion, a little oil and butter, and broth (no fat).

soups are good: carrots, celery, onions w/lentils or split peas and broth (no fat)

broccoli soup too.

good luck, that should give you a start!

any fruit except dried fruit (eg, raisins) are fine. i wouldn't personally go with instant oatmeal b/c it's not 'natural', but if it's fat free and doesn't have a lot of salt, then i wouldn't throw it away. you'll need raw oats (eg, quaker oats, but not quick) for the recipes. frozen fruit is ok if there is no added sugar. canned beans, again, with no additives, would be fine.

yes on the yogurt and berries for smoothies, but remember only two servings of 6 oz of yogurt per day. sometimes i'll add milk to a yogurt w/the fruit, or a banana to thicken it, then some berries, for a smoothie, to save my yogurts.

looks like a good start!

this is good to mix with non fat yogurt, any flavor, as a dessert or a sweet tooth fix. i found this on the last FS thread.

smash fat granola
1 cup oatmeal
1 egg white
1 teaspoon oil
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix it up and spread on a cookie sheet. Bake for 8 minutes at 300 degrees. Stir it up again and bake it for another 8 minutes or until it lightly browned and crunchy.

misskitty,

That fajita recipe looks good. I will have to try it.

These are my favorite. I have them for breakfast often. They are so yummy!

Oatmeal cookies:

1 cup uncooked (old fashioned) oatmeal
1/4tsp salt
1 ripe mashed banana..the riper the better
1 egg white (or 1/4 cup egg sub)
2 packets of Splenda
1 Tblsp of cinnamon
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1/8 tsp almond flavoring

Mix the ingredients together and spoon by teaspoon into cookie sheet (I spray with Pam) cook 10 -15 minutes in 350 degree preheated oven

Hey, guys!

I am starting fat smash tomorrow. I hit a plateau counting calories, and just hit another one doing low-carb, plus I'm having some bathroom issues with it(sorry, TMI). So I figure all the fruits and veggies will be good, plus I need something strict.

I got the book from the library and will shop tomorrow. I'm not too concerned except for the sugar, which I'd been limiting but which has been creeping up lately, and the wine - I have a glass or two a day on the weekends and will miss it. I've already been eating lots of veggies and egg whites, and I love oatmeal and brown rice.

A few questions:
1) He doesn't specify anything on the yogurt, but I'm going to do plain mixed with fresh fruit since I think there's not supposed to be sugar? I don't do artificial sweeteners.
2) Why is herbal tea limited? In the winter I drink it all day and count it as my water.
3) He doesn't address fats too much for phase 1 - he talks about limiting to 1-2 t when cooking. Do you use any on your salads? I don't want to use store-bought dressing since they tend to have things like sugar and corn syrup, so I figured I'd use balsamic and lemon juice, but I need at least a little oil.
4) Did everyone really avoid the scale for 9 days, and what kind of results did you get? I'm going to have DH hide it and not tell me where it is.

Thanks, guys!

Hi natamars, let's see if i can help.

1. for the yogurt, i'd have to agree w/no sugar.
2. he wants us to get used to drinking water and really, unfortunately, tea doesn't count as water....i know, i don't like that either.
3. for the salads, good idea on the 'do it yourself', but he does say 3tbsp per salad, non fat of course.
4. i did weigh myself b/c i'm into immediate satisfaction. it's probably a good idea not to, b/c as long as you follow the rules, there shouldn't be any surprises at the end of 9 days. i only got 5 pounds off at the end of detox though, so don't hope too high!

Good Morning Ladies,

Going shopping in a few mins. Just wanted to say "hey" before I go. It is unseasonably warm here in Maine. Everyone has been getting blizzards and such and we have been having above normal temps and no snow. So strange. We are usually buried in snow by now. I have to say I don't miss it! lol. It's nice to be able to walk outside and not have to put on the full winter gear just to check the mail. lol.

Shae8230 and misskitty, could you answer a few questions for me please? What is the total amount of popcorn we can have? I know it has to be airpopped but can't remember if its 1 cup or 4 cups, just don't want to go over my limit. How many many veggie burgers are we allowed a day? I like boca and morningstar garden burgers, spicy black bean but can't remember the limit per day. I really tried to start yesterday but no such luck. We got 12 inches of snow here in Texas (weird huh?) so I couldn't get to the grocery store and I need to stock up and get everything ready for this journey. I already made so many oatmeal cookies, they are the easiest for me to eat for breakfast. I have a feeling I will stay in phase I for more then 9 days due to it takes awhile for me to get rid of the sugarmonster cravings. Actually I could stay in phase I for a long time but I know it's important to move on to the next phase. I had been well lets say trying to do southbeach for the last couple of years so I'm use to eating alot of chicken and meat so it will be an ajustment. My biggest fear is not losing weight due to my menopause and how my body reacts to carbs even when they are good carbs. My meopause was surgically induced about 11 years ago and I'm still in menopause. I had one ovary left and in about a year it tried up and whoa here came the menopause, gained 20 pounds in one year and hadn't changed anything with my diet or exercise regimen. I have spent way too much money on different diet plans and lord knows I have every diet book out there. I just want this weight off and not let it control my life anymore. Good luck to ya'll. Sorry to ramble so much.

Hi sluggo~ I was born and raised in southeast Texas. What part of the state are you from? We never got snow. lol.

I found this website helpful to refresh my memory since it has been 4 years since I did FS.

http://www.diet.com/g/fat-smash-diet

I don't know about the veggie burgers. I will have to see what I can find out. I stayed on phase 1 for 3 weeks last time. Dr. Ian has said the it is okay to stay on FS a couple of weeks longer. But, don't be afraid to move on to phase 2. I am insulin resistant and have PCOS. I lose weight S-L-O-W,
so I understand what you said about being scared that you won't lose weight. Just remember that we are not in a contest to see who can lose the most the fastest. ( I have to remind myself....dh loses super fast compared to me! UGH) And also know that you won't lose as fast after phase 1. I was so surprised when I hit phase 2 last time. I wanted to lose as much as I did in phase 1 and as fast. But, it isn't realistic.

Good luck to you!

I hope this is the plan for you. And don't worry about rambling. ;) lol.
I love to read long posts.

sluggo~

This is what I found about veggie burgers and popcorn from a Q&A with Dr. Ian:

Can I have popcorn?
3 cups of air popped popcorn is ok. No butter of course

Are veggie burgers allowed in Phase I?
Veggie burger which are made of 100% veggie or tofu are allowed. Some veggie burgers have bread and/or cheese contents. You can't have those.

It seems like he is saying if it is just veggies or tofu that you can have unlimited amounts. I would say that since we can have unlimited beans that the black beans would be okay.... as long as there aren't any added ingredients that are not allowed on phase 1.

HTH!

Hi mleajanko~

Hopefully one of the other ladies can help you.... I don't know diddly about EFS. lol. And as far as I can tell.. there isn't a lot posted about the menu's online. I have searched and searched. Guess they wantcha to buy the book ;). When FS first came out... the info was easy to find online. I found more info online than I did in the book. The FS book was sorta lacking.

shae8230, thanks for the info. I posted on Mush's site but still haven't gotten a reply for an updated food list for phase I. I'm pretty sure I know what to do. Are you already on fs or starting at another date? Tomorrow after taking my dad to get stitches out I will be going shopping so I can start monday.

sluggo44~ I am waiting to start on Monday. We went shopping today and stocked up on veggies and fruit. But, we still have some food that we need to eat before it ruins. In this economy... we can't waste. Dh is starting the diet with me... so, it should be fun.

You may also try joining the fat smash yahoo group. I tried to post the link... but, it won't work here. You can just do a search for fat smash yahoo group and you will find it.

I just rejoined and am waiting for approval. But, if I remember correctly... they had lots of info in their database.

I finally got approved today, it took almost 1 1/2 days. It does have info but I have a feeling its not as active as 3fat chicks. Having 3 sites (3fat chicks, yahoo and Mush's) I believe we can do this. Even thou I'm not officially starting till monday I started yesterday trying to eat the fs way. Tonight I had 1 1/2 cups of brown rice and mixed veggies Yum! It's so weird I feel so good right now, I'm starting to think meat is not the best thing for me but I will be incorprating it on phase II. Oh I forgot to tell you, I live in Weatherford Texas pretty much 10 miles west of fort worth.

Happy Valentine's everyone! Started today. Weighed in at 145, up a few lbs. , probably mostly extra salt the last few. Having oatmeal, soy milk, and blueberries for b'fast. Looking forward to brown rice, lentils, and chick peas - love those foods, and haven't had them since low-carbing. Just have to be careful not to overdo.

Planning on ice skating(haven't done it in years) and the gym today. Also need to shop for lots more fruit and veggies.

Hope everyone has a great day.

hi!

there really is no menu, it's what you want to eat, but in the quantities and restrictions that FS suggests. Sherry's menu for one day is a good start, but remember too that if you want two clementines for snack, you can have that. i would say just pay attention to your body and when you're full. that's the most interesting thing i've found so far.

i keep going down three pounds then up two, then down three, then up two... this yoyo is making me nuts! but i keep plugging along...

don't forget smoothies for snacks (one banana, about 8 oz NF milk and 6 oz yogurt, any berries mixed in, and even some ice if you want a 'milkshake'.

do i have to paste in the sig tracker each time? we'll see once i post this!

gained 20 pounds in one year and hadn't changed anything with my diet or exercise regimen.

ugh! that's my worst nightmare, doing e'thing right and then having my body decide it wants to do what IT wants to do.

i second the rambling, not a problem at all.

one thing good has happened; i've noticed many fewer blemishes what with eating right and exercising. i finally have fewer pimples than my 17 and 13 yr olds!

also, i made myself a trick for the water. i measured my glasses to see which one was really 8 oz, then i drink 2 glasses of water per meal automatically. if we drink one more with each snack, then we have 8 in our day! i drink it first, now that i'm in phase 2/3, i can drink tea and soda again. i want to make sure i get the water in, so i drink it down first.

ok, my sig box is checked (thx sherry), but the tracker didn't show in my last post. do i really have to go and paste in the darn thing each time i write?

hi ladies,

i found this site with some recipes for those of you doing EFS. they're not appropriate for FS b/c with EFS you have a particular diet to eat everyday. not like with FS where you can combine and be creative with the permitted ingredients when and how you feel like.

misskitty, are you in menopause? I wouldn't worry too much about not losing if your not in menopause. Once I was 100% in menopause that is the year I gained 20 pounds without changing a thing. Diet after diet, doctor after doctor and the weight just wouldn't come off until I discovered Southbeach. For some reason my body no longer liked carbs and that is why I couldn't get the weight off. I did Southbeach for about 4-6 months and the weight came off. Fast forward too 5 years ago when I had a grand mal seizure and went into a severe deep depression. Quit exercising (that is one thing I faithfully do) didn't care what I ate and boom here comes the weight. Tried going on Southbeach but would stick to it for about a week then cave. Like I said earlier I have spen boo koos of mula on so many diet programs and every book out there and the only thing that shrunk was my wallet. I remember feeling really good on FS but don't remember how my weight loss went. For the past 4 days I have been trying to eat clean and haven't had any meat and I can't believe how good I feel just from not eating meat. I'm officially starting tomorrow and feel pretty confident about it just hope my willpower doesn't peter out on me. shae8230, misskitty and everyone else who is starting tomorrow or already on the program I wish the best of luck to you.

Good Evening~

I had a good day today. We went to church this morning, came home and watched Nascar (BIG FANS! :)), and took a nap. lol. Dh and I are ready to start in the morning.

misskitty~ You don't have to paste it everytime. You should be able to go to "edit profile" using quick links at the top of the page. Then, click on edit signature on the left. Then, copy and paste your ticker code in the signature section and save it.

sluggo44~ Good luck to you tomorrow!

tryinghardtolose~ Good luck to you, too!

One thing that I remembered today is detox makes me really tired. I have to remember to take a multivitamin everyday. And eat every 3 hours.

Have a good night everyone,
Sherry

shae, good luck today! yesterday was my first day. i was VERY cranky, i think because of the sugar(or lack thereof). I ate oatmeal,a banana, 2 smoothies made with plain yogurt, soymilk, and frozen pineapple, brown rice, black beans and salsa. at the end of the day i realized i hadn't had veggies - i make a big salad every weekend and eat it all week usually, bt i was too tired and cranky to chop veggies. i did go ice skating(my son did great for his first time) and do 45 minutes of cardio at the gym. i didn't drink enough water for some reason, plus i drank too much the night before celebrating v-day, so i'm sure non of that helped.

post later to let us know how it's going!

let's see if the sig thing finally worked. thanks again sherry!

menopause? :dizzy: i'm 47, so it has started. four years ago i lost 30 pounds and it was easier: the first half was move more, eat less. the second half was the FS diet. it blasted whatever complacency my body had chosen and got me into a good place. i gained back 13 pounds over the last two years and now i'm back down 9. but it's only been 9 in the last five weeks, so i'm thinking of picking up the 4 day diet book today. i think i need a body shock since i faithfully exercise, even though i have to remember to switch it up and not do the same thing 6-7 days per week. the other problem is that i haven't been hungry, so i forget to eat e/3 hours.

sluggo, what a time you've had!!! i'm sure you can do this, you've obviously been through quite a lot and this is just one more step to your future!

hey guess what?! we're going to get another snow storm! if the kids are off school tomorrow.... you'll hear the scream loud and clear across the country.
