hi sleepy -

dumping happens to people who've had gastric bypass. because we don't have a pyloric valve, everything we eat sort of squeezes through the outlet of the pouch into the duodenum [think TOOTHPASTE]. sorry for the visual.

now, if we eat a lot of sweets or fats [or both!], this load of bad-for-us food kicks off an immediate physiological response that involves insulin and a number of other digestive hormones. people's symptoms differ, but can include sudden, explosive diarrhea, fever, feeling like you were just hit incredibly hard by the flu, dizziness, nausea, and a few others. and it doesn't pass quickly.

Keep in mind though that not all RNYers dump. I don't-and I kinda wish I did . . . . My surgeon (and i'm sure every surgeon gives a different #) says the majority DON'T dump and only 20-30% do. . . . .however, anecdotally (sp?) that doesn't seem to be the case.

thank you all!

So basicly this happens if you dont stick to your diet and eat more junk food? Honestly, this does sound as one of the worse bad points of the surgery. Keeping my fingers crossed it will go easy on me

you got it, sleepy! if you do what you're told, there's a very low risk of dumping. as a rule of thumb [and everyone's different!] if you keep the carbs and fat to less than 15 grams per eating episode, especially at first, you should be fine.

and especially at the beginning, be sure to eat protein with any carb. that means you eat a little bit of cheese with your little bit of fruit. there's absolutely no reason to suffer with this.
