Yes! The slight disadvantage of aging metabolism is more than matched by a more realistic attitude about the process than I ever had in previous attempts. Which is why at age 49-and-a-half I started the process to lose 100 lbs, met the goal a month before 51st birthday and now maintaining for the last 18 months.

I had been carrying around that extra 100 lbs. for 20 years.

There is hope, however I have found weight loss to be more slower.

There absolutely is hope.
Yup.
For me, moving to a plant-based diet made all the difference.
Hang in there!

I lost more than 100 pounds somewhere in that decade we are talkin' 'bout and did gain some of it back, took it off, gained, took off lol, basically maintaining the major weight loss. I'm WAY older than 50 now and fit, happy, energetic and hopeful for the future (living to be 120 is one of my life goals).

THERE IS NEVER A TIME WHEN THERE IS NOT HOPE, even in our darkest hours, or at least that is what I believe and I have to shout that at myself every now and then because it is so easy to slip into a feeling that things are over or whatever but as I THINK it was Yogi Berra (sp?) who said, "IT AIN'T OVER 'TIL IT'S OVER!"

Woot! Absolutely!

Default Hope After 50

This forum is great. I'm glad to read about the experiences of other "50 somethings" who have worked past the pain and move on to victory in the weight loss fight.

Thank you ladies for all of your positive encouragement. Even though not necessarily directed towards me, I found encouragement and hope.

I really like the attitudes here. I'm gradually coming to terms with the fact that my life and my body are different than they were 10 or 15 years ago, but that I can still be strong, healthy and feel good about myself.

I just found this thread and would like to join in, even though I'm over 60. I was overweight all my adult life (190 at 22, 210 at 30, 230 at 40, 260 at 50 and then up very quickly until I put on the brakes. I found losing in my 50s quite difficult, though. I lost 15 pounds fairlyl quickly (down from my horrible high of 312, which, luckily, only lasted a week) and then was stuck at 295 for several years. And then suddenly the scale began to move, 2-3 pounds a week, down 12 pounds. I read articles about perimenopause and wondered if that had been the problem.

I lost a few more pounds but have been self-stalled around 270 for 2 years and am starting again. I'm a high school teacher and principal at a small private school and work 10 hours a day 6 to 7 days a week, so my roadblock/excuse has been that I have no time! I'm taking this summer to get into better habits.

I used to walk a lot and haven't done that seriously in several years, so am walking again. Good luck to everyone!

Hi from another "newbie". I would like to lose 45 lb. I am 65 years old, and I weighed 190 two days ago. (I'm down a couple of pounds but will wait until next week to "officially" post that.)

I have always been fairly active. In fact, I told my husband that I want to lose 45 lb. so I can get a saddle mule. I haven't ridden in years....but why not...as long as it is gentle. I don't want to be a rodeo rider.

I live in the country and have a variety of animals...pets and livestock. Chickens. Horses and donkeys, and even pigs. I rehab wildlife and I have dogs and cats. I raise waterlilies and have koi and goldfish. Love to work in the yard, but carrying extra weight and my poor old joints...make being active difficult. I figure I can either go sit in a rocker on the porch, or I can try to do something about this. I don't want to give up on life and be a person who just observes....I want to participate.

I haven't settled on a diet plan. In my life, I have been on every diet you can name, and probably a few you have never heard of. Right now I am eating sensibly and moderately. I have cut out sugar...sodas (diet and otherwise), drinking lots of water. Making myself eat breakfast and no eating after 6 pm.

I am planning on having dental implants in a few weeks, and I think I will have to restrict my diet for awhile while they heal.

So, just wanted to pop in and say hello and I am getting ready for not just a diet....but a lifestyle change.

Default Back at it after 60!

I am 61 - last month, and it seems SO MUCH HARDER to lose the weight than even a few years ago. I am joining you guys again to get some inspiration. Working out is not a problem, for me it is the carbs!!!
