Wow! Lots of interesting things said here. I like the idea of the mazes - very powerful.
I, for one, am not assertive. I most definitely would not have said anything (& probably would not have even looked at her). For me, part of that is because in my own head I would be half agreeing because yes that is (almost) how harshly I speak to myself. That's the part that would have had me leave the store blinking back tears.
As for the what goes around comes around - it's true! When I was in grade 9 I was picked on mercilessly by one boy (well, more than one but this story is about one). He used to follow me home after school & chant "Pat" at me in this horrid voice (Pat is that character that used to be on Saturday Night Live who no one knew the sex of - I had very short hair). It was a bad time for me. Flash ahead five years & I start dating my future husband. He was in the reserves at the time & low & behold so was butthead from grade 9. Unfortunately for butthead he was still stupid & lower rank than dh. When dh asked him if he knew me (as we went to the same school) he told the whole story to him laughing the whole time, well, laughing until he found out dh I was dating me. Let's just say he did more than his share of s*%t jobs after that.
