Food / Meal / Points - Help Please.

  • Good morning everyone. I am trying to figure out how I am going to tally my points for tonights dinner I am making. I can't figure out how I would do it.

I am not making a recipe. This is what I consider good slop lol. I am making a casserole like dish. But I am just throwing stuff into that I bought for it.... no recipe followed.

    Here is my ingrediants:
    1 bag no yolk noodles

1 package smoked sausage (cut into small peices)
    1 bag of frozen peas
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of chicken soup
Maybe some mild cheddar sprinkled thru- out (not sure yet)

I am not sure how you would figure this out for points. And I am not sure how many servings it will turn out to be. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  • Figure the points for each indivdual item you are using, add those up and divide by how many servings you want to break it up into.

    or

List the cal/fat/fiber for all the ingredients, total them up. Divide each category by the number of servings you decide to break it up into and then figure the points.
  • Thanks Kelly. But I think I am doing something wrong. Here are the numbers:

    noodles: serv. 6, fiber 3, cal. 210, fat 0.5 = 4 points
    sausage: serv. 8, fiber 0, cal. 190, fat 17 = 5 points
    mushroom soup: serv. 2.5, fiber 2, cal. 80, fat 2.5 = 1 point
    chicken soup: serv. 2.5, fiber 2, cal. 100, fat 6 = 2 points
    frozen peas: serv. 5, fiber 4, cal. 70, fat 0 = 1 point

Which if you add up the points it is 13 points. Now the numbers above are per serving. So I am thinking 13 would be the total points no matter what size serving it is. Is this correct?

I also went to ww's site and figured the total numbers on there points calculator thing.
    fiber 11, cal. 650, fat 26 = 14 points

There is a difference in results. I am a little baffled (sp?). I also cannot remember if peas are a "free point" food.

I really think I am off. What would you get out of the numbers above... roughly?
  • noodles: serv. 6, fiber 3, cal. 210, fat 0.5
    sausage: serv. 8, fiber 0, cal. 190, fat 17 = 5 points
    mushroom soup: serv. 2.5, fiber 2, cal. 80, fat 2.5 = 1 point
    chicken soup: serv. 2.5, fiber 2, cal. 100, fat 6 = 2 points
frozen peas: serv. 5, fiber 4, cal. 70, fat 0

    For the entire thing:

    noodles: fiber 18, cal. 1260, fat 3
    sausage: fiber 0, cal. 1520, fat 136
mushroom soup: fiber 5, cal 200, fat 6.25
chicken soup: fiber 5, cal 250, fat 15
frozen peas: fiber 20, cal 350, fat 0

    Using my points finder:
    4 servings: fiber 12, cal. 895, fat 40 points: 20
    6 servings: fiber 8, cal. 597, fat 23 points: 12
    8 servings: fiber 6, cal. 448, fat 20 points: 10
    10 servings: fiber 5, cal. 358, fat 16 points: 8

    Hope this helps
  • The way I do it is a little different, I figure out the volume of each item going in both by weight and by cup, so how many cups in the bag of peas, how many cups of noodles, how many cups of soup etc.

for example, 2-10 ounce cans soup = 2.5 cups if it is 100 cals per can (200 total)divide by 5 servings = 40 cals per 1/2 cup serving 1.75 grams fat = 1 point per serving.

I do this with each item going into the recipe and then do the totals at the end. You should then have the total number of servings for the recipe by cup and you can then divide your points by the number of cups or half cups of servings.
  • Thanks you guys. Man... sometimes these things can be so confusing. I don't think I will make something like this again lol. It is rough figuring out the points lol.

It ended up being like 15 servings! Each being 1 cup. There is enough there for two meals! So that is lunch today for us.

I think next time I am not going to throw things together like that lol. But it did turn out pretty good.

Thanks again for all of your help. I do appreciate it.
  • Do you (you meaning everyone who reads it not you personally) understand that when you use a while package or can or box you need to take the nutritional information x the number of servings in the package/can/box like Lucky did then do the totals? That is where most people get confused.

Glad it was good...you probably could have made each serving 2 cups rather than 1 cup still had a decent amount of point for it too.
  • Now I get it! Thanks Kelly! That took me a bit to understand lol. But I get it now. Duh me lol. That makes a lot of since. I am going to have to go back over it and see what I did and make sure I did it right lol. Thanks again everyone.
