How many points would you say is in a hamburger. I've been invited to a cookout this weekend and wanted to plan ahead. I thought 3 for the bun and 5 for the pattie. Does that sound right? I never eat hamburgers so I'm not sure. Thanks!
I always buy the 2 point buns, but I have seen 3 and 4 pt buns at the store. So you judge by the size, small (sort of McD's kiddie burger size) would be 2 points, medium, about 4 1/2 inches across would be 3, and those huge 5-6 inch buns, definitely 4 points. When I go to cookouts they usually have the small or medium size buns. Mmmm, a cookout sounds like fun, and a great way to spend the day with Dad on Father's Day. I'm cooking, so I think that is what we'll do!
A sneaky thing to do if you want to reduce the points of a big bun is to hollow it out - when served those big buns at resturants, I tell them to put the condiments on the side and pull most of the dough out of the middle. That way, I can still have two sides, but about 1/3 less bread -
My grocery chain has 1-point hamburger buns that taste decent. I wish they had more low-point and/or whole-grain bread products, though. I haven't been able to find whole-wheat English muffins, for example, and I also can't find any truly whole-grain crackers (only crackers with some wheat or oat flour). I may have to look online or venture over to Whole Foods.
I live in a small town and have trouble finding stuff like that too. Luckily, I like to cook and have resorted to making most of my own baked goods. I even bake my own tortilla chips now - very easy. This weekend, I'm going to try making my own bagels - we'll see how I do!
Yeah, fortunately I live in their region! I love their whole-grain bread--it's 1 point a slice and I find it very satisfying, unlike "light" bread. Too bad they don't make whole-grain English muffins or crackers, but I may try ordering their whole-grain bagels (our local stores don't seem to have them).
If you don't want to use the points for beef, you might consider the Morningstar Farms BetterN Burgers - they are only 1 point each. I have one on light bread, add a slice of ff cheese, and lettuce, tomato, and onion and have a terrific "burger" for only 3 points.
