Beans

  • Hi,
I am back on ww (again!) and am discovering the world of beans. You can really eat a lot and use very few points, and get filled up too. I especially like bean soup and a rice/bean boxed mix from the Supermarket.

My question is this: Do those of you who've added beans to your diet lose weight as fast as those who don't? Even though I am carefully calculating points off the packages, I'm not dropping lbs like I wish I would. I'm wondering if this whole high fiber bean thing is too good to be true. Maybe all the extra bulk is weighing me down?
    Thanks,
    Denise
  • DMG,

Because of all the fiber, beans can be very filling. I find it easy to eat too many points in beans.

Be careful you are measuring the beans right because beans expand when you cook them. So, a 1/2 cup of UNCOOKED beans might make a cup or more of COOKED beans. Most of the beans in the Complete Food book are 2 points for 1/2 cup COOKED beans.

I almost got caught in this the other day. I made dried soybean what I thought would cook into 1/3 cup cooked soybeans just to find out that they cooked into 1/2 cup of food! It's just an extra point, but every extra point adds up on my hips!
  • If you're into beans, may I suggest the Italian Lentil Soup I posted on the soup recipe thread. I made it yesterday in the crockpot and it was excellent. Served with Lite Italian bread! Yum! Don't know how beans will effect weight loss since I've only been back OP 3 weeks, but I'm losing at the same slow pace I always have... beans or not.

  • Beans, beans, the more you eat, the more you toot.

Sorry... it just came to me.

    tee hee.

    Beans are great... really!
  • I couldn't resist responding to the little beans "poem!!" It goes, 'beans, beans the magical fruit, the more you eat the more you toot!!!' I'm sure we all get the idea with beans, ha ha.

  • I knew I was forgetting something. Thanks Pat!

  • Wait...there is more to the poem!!

    Beans, beans the magical fruit,
The more you eat the more you toot,
The more you toot the better you feel,
So eat your beans at every meal.

  • Well,
Thank you so much for the fine poetry! As for beans, I was using the old fiber formula...so if something had 9g fiber I could eat a lot...now I understand that I can only count 4g fiber no matter what. I guess that means fewer beans. My husband will be happy!
    Take care,
    Denise
  • Oh yeah, that is the rest of the poem thanks and so true
My husband says they are "deadly"

  • The poem I always heard was ...

Beans, beans, good for your heart,
The more you eat, the more you ...

Well, you know what rhymes w/ heart!
  • Oh yeah I have heard that one too!!
Isn't it funny how silly kids poems like that make its way around the country?
  • The bean poem I know is very similar but not quite the same.

    It goes like this:

    Beans, beans, the musical fruit
The more you eat, the more you toot
The more you toot, the better you feel
So lets have beans for every meal.

My husband is from back east and knows the one that StraitLover posted. He had never heard my version before he came out west.
