Scary bicycle story

  • Yesterday I had the life scare out of me. Actually- I almost lost my life on my bike.

I am into riding my bike to the grocery store over and over again to get my weekly groceries. I go with an oversize back pack and pack that thing to the hilt and ride on home. Round trip is 7 miles. I go several times on Saturday and several on Sunday, until the shopping is done. We have bike lanes the entire way and people are pretty nice about giving people on bikes curtsy here in the San Diego area. Yesterday, I was riding along as usual in the bike lane. I can up to an intersection and the light was green. So, I went straight through. Well a lady in a huge truck decided to pass me and turn right at the same time. Being the brave soul I am, I screamed a loud girl ear piercing scream and tried my best to avoid her. She stopped dead at my scream. I narrowly avoided being run over by being a scary cat and screaming my lungs out. I was so scared.

As usual, I was back on my bike today and made two trips to the grocery store. No mishaps.
  • Unfortunately I have seen and heard many time.
Bikers are often "no seen" buy other drivers; when I say "not seen" i mean they are ignored on the road. It is really very dangerous.
Bikers have rights on the road also!
I think there should be some kind of national awareness.
I live in NYC and see plenty of bikers get hurt, honked at, and yelled at buy raging drivers.
  • The same goes for motorcycles. I ride with my husband and there are many times that a car or truck will make a turn or lane change and not have seen us. You really have to be a good defensive driver.
