Question Trying to understand my friend - thyroid

I have a friend who has been diagnosed with a hypoactive thyroid. I understand that she has been overly tired lately and this is one of the symptoms

She has been put on medication and from what I understand it will be at least a month before she feels much different

anyone else out there who can enlighten me on this disease? I am really trying to understand what she is going through
-mood swings etc

Thanks
Cindy

It took me 2 years to get the right dosage. You have to start small and work up or you could have a heart attack. Symptoms vary but actual weight gain that can be attributed to thyroid is about 30 pounds anymore than that is just overeating. Weight will not come off when the dosage is right, you need to change your eating habits. An excellent website for info is www.thyroid.about.com.

I was diagnosed with that several years ago............I had felt exremely tired but associated it with Christmas busyness................I was put on a dose which was right for me..felt much more energy in a few weeks and have been on the same dosage for years. I have it checked anually now.

Everyone doesnt gain from it..............I was rather excited to be honest and thought "Wow..now maybe weight issues will be easier" (I must add I am a WW Leader...........and think like normal people think

My weight is exactly the same as it was years ago..............it is still all about choices.right choices and exercise!

Your friend will more than likely be FINE in a couple weeks.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your replies.
It has been a real hard thing to try and help with as (I hate to say it as she is a friend) but she is kind of a chronic complainer and her eating habits are really not great so at first I really didn't have a whole lot of compassion. She has always been one that if she felt like it she would go home after work at 5 and crawl into jammies, grab a book and read, watch tv etc to leave her DH to fend with everything else

so this turn of events has not improved the situation I am afraid

Oh well I am going to try to convince her to go out for coffee tonite with me
and see how she is doing
