Lorna - yes, DH is "dear husband." I think the Fitbit would be a great gift.

Does it motivate you to take more steps, take the long way through the store, etc. by you watching it like a pedometer? Or is it more than that?

I want one because I like gadgets and numbers but I don't want to become obsessed with it!

I have the FitBit Ultra and LOVE it. It's not much more than a fancy pedometer, but for some reason I'm much more motivated by it than any pedometer I've used. It totally motivates me to move more...anytime I get a phone call, I stand up and start pacing. Sometimes I just walk while watching tv. I park far away from stores, etc. It's really fun to see how many steps I can rack up.

I've worn it twice for sleep, but it doesn't do much for me in that department. I sleep fine, for the most part, and I wasn't that interested in the sleep readings. But the extra steps? Oh yeah. Love it for that.

movielover 04-20-2013 01:11 PM

I am still torn, I have the Fitbit sitting in the package still. I am actually leaning towards the Activelink since it is waterproof! But then I go back to the fitbit because no matter if I am on WW or not, I will have it. Grrrrrr

TripSwitch 04-20-2013 02:04 PM

I'm liking the FitBit now, not loving it... But it's OK... and I'm going to try to see if the numbers it's giving me for total calories burned for the day can start to help me create more of a calorie deficit to get the scale moving in the right direction again... And I went ahead and got the FitBit Aria wifi scale even though I already had the Withings wifi one, so I could just have it all integrated at the FitBit site...

Now I just need to figure out if I'm going to go to the trouble to double track everything on both WW and FitBit...

This is my issue! I went with the FB too, I am not too big on paying monthly for something and also paying for WW, so I figure FB was the way to go! It is charging now! Walk in 15 minutes, stay tuned!

movielover 04-23-2013 12:02 AM

Well, here I thought I walked a ton, I work in schools, but man, I didn't even get 6000 steps in, close, but not quite, that stinks!!!!

I think i will go run up and down the steps :)!

Koshka 04-24-2013 01:23 AM

DH is dear husband or darling husband or even D****d husband....

I do so love the Fitbit. What has been so good about it is really showing me the connection between my activity and what I eat and how much I lose. Each week before I go to my WW meeting and look at what calorie deficit I have for the week and then I see if what I lose actually fits. And it has been pretty accurate...not exactly mostly I think because my metabolism is not that great since I've lost weight before. But it is accurate enough that I don't ever get to WW and find myself surprised by my weigh in.

That's still approx 3mi... not bad... for a day at work... I'd say... :)

Do you go to the trouble to track your food and calories on the FitBit site? Right now I'm just counting WW pts. which even though I know is a form of calorie counting I'm finding it to be a nice "psychological" break from all the actual CC I was was doing on MFP... Now, I just count pts. and know that if I stay within my allotment I'll be creating a good size deficit... plus I needed a break from the really strict low carb thing... It's really helped my mindset with WW that I can have more variety in what I had been allowing myself...

I'm still experimenting with the FitBit... But I really want to see if I can use the total calories burned number it gives me each day and create my deficit based on that number and see if it translates into the expected loss like it sounds like you've been able to do with it...

I think my problem right now is that I'm collecting all of this data... from my FuelBand, the Fitbit... and not to mention my HRM's from my runs, etc... But I'm still not quite there yet, as far as figuring out how many Weekly's and AP's I can eat and still lose... oh, well... trial and error... but I'm OK with that... :)

This is me...I am tracking food in WW and FB and it is making me a little crazy! HA HA

No. I track food and calories on MyFitnessPal and I link the accounts so MFP exports the data to Fitbit. It does it as a meal. That is Fitbit will show that Breakfast was X number of calories, etc. and it won't break down what I ate for breakfast. That is OK, though, since I already have that at MyFitnessPal.

I do find that if I am careful about recording what I eat at MFP and use my Fitbit all the time that my actual loss is about 10% less than what Fitbit says it should be. So if fitbit says I should lose 1.1 pounds (Based upon my deficit) then I tend to lose about 1 pound. That is pretty close given that you may be off a bit on calories (particularly when eating out) and my metabolism is probably out of whack some from losing weight in the past.

TripSwitch 04-25-2013 06:33 PM

Koshka thanks for reminding about this... I can't believe I completely forgot that I could link MFP to FitBit... :dizzy:

I haven't been bothering with MFP lately, since I've just been counting WW pts these last few weeks... But I'm really interested now to see how the numbers start adding up when it comes to what FitBit says I need to create the deficits that I need... So even though I really wanted to just count pts... I guess I'm gonna use MFP as well...

movielover 04-25-2013 07:23 PM

So far, I really like the FB! The sleeping part is so cool!

I am not so sure the calories are accurate, but the mileage is super close to my Garmin!

I have to confess....I have stopped counting points and just count in MFP. Basically if I am reaching my desired deficit on Fitbit (750 calories a day), I found that on WW I was eating such that I had about 30-35 WP left at the end of the week. This was really consistent so I didn't have a reason to really record my WW points.

That doesn't mean I don't pay attention to points. I do, but just think about that in my head while I record on paper (well on the computer) the calories at MFP which works fine for me.

I have been thinking about this....seems like when on FB I have more calories, I am out of points, and when I have more points, I am out of calories! ODD!

Koshka 04-27-2013 12:21 PM

This can depend to some extent on what you eat. WW points don't include fruits and veggies, for example. Also WW will charge more points for a higher fat or higher carb food than a food that has a lot of protein or fiber.

I haven't even tried the sleep tracker yet... between wearing the thing every waking hour... the thought of wearing it while I'm sleeping is just too much for me... :)

I'm finding that once I reach my WW pt's target for the day... 26 pts... I'm pretty much out of calories on FitBit... but that's to create a 1000 calorie deficit for the day... I'm going to do my best to stick with it this week and see if I actually lose 2lbs...

I usually sleep in those shelf tank top bras, so I just connect it to the strap!

Oh, I thought you had to wear it in that little "thing" that comes with it (not the clip)... That thingie that you wear around your wrist...

But actually, I saw recently that there are people who are working on prototypes for "activity" monitors that are already incorporated in the fabric of underwear... And I guess you just put it on and go about your day... That should be pretty interesting if that ever hits the market... Lol... :)

HA HA!!!!:o

I HATE things on my wrists, so I figure at least I am wearing it and sure enough it tracks each and every time I wake up!

1 thing I have noticed is the FB doesn't always register the stairs!

I know for 100% that I have walked up and down my stairs at least 4 times today, and it is only saying 2!

The Fitbit counts a flight of stairs as 10 feet up. If yours don't go quite that high it might not get them every time. Also, I think I have heard some people say that if you go immediately back down without taking some steps up at the top that is sometimes doesn't count it. Some have said if you take the stairs very slowly (like if you were holding hands with a toddler) it sometimes doesn't count it. I don't have stairs anywhere around me, but I get credited when I walk up the largest hill which is about a mile from my house...sometimes, when I drive up it, also. :o

Another thing I have read at other sites is that it sometimes registers a change in air pressure as a flight of stairs. So, if you are walking on a very windy day with storms on the way in you might get some false readings. The only time I really noticed a lot of misreadings on flights was at an amusement park on certain rides.

Daimere 04-30-2013 03:48 AM

if anyone wants to be fitbit friends, I'm daimere there.

Koshka 05-03-2013 02:35 AM

I don't have any stairs in my home but I live in a hilly neighborhood. I do a daily walk that usually follows the same path. I have had the Fitbit register as few as 5 flights of stairs and as much as 8 for the same walk...

TripSwitch 05-04-2013 03:19 PM

I've actually been pretty surprised by how accurate the floors "climbed" has been... I decided to go for one of those badges the other day and did 41floors in my building and it was dead on accurate... Now I'm determined to get the 50 floors badge in one day... Lol... And it even gave me the idea to do a 110 floors in a day challenge as a 9/11 tribute this year in September... So I'm going to see if I can get people together for that when the time rolls around this year...

Oh, and on a completely unrelated note... I actually lost my FitBit yesterday... And I went a little crazy... I immediately ran out and bought a new one... And it turned out that I somehow managed to drop my original one in my pool some how... Lol... and I promise I wasn't trying to swim with it or anything like that... lol... It just somehow came out of my shorts pocket even though it was clipped in there and managed to fall in the deep end of my pool without me even realizing it...

I have heard of a lot of people losing these little things pretty easily without even realizing it... So I'm really going to have to be more careful, because I'm not going to run out an keep dropping a 100 bucks if this keeps happening... They really should make some sort of mini "leash" for the thing so you can pin it or something to your shorts or pants or in your pocket somehow...

Well, I actually, DID jump in the pool, swam a bunch of laps with mine one! I freaked out when I looked down and saw it!!! When I got out of the pool it was working, but I put it in rice anyways and it totally works! It was int he pool for about 20 minutes! CRAZY!!! I was going crazy too without it!

I have been hooking mine to my bra!

Actually the way I wound up finding it was when I decided to retrace my steps one last time (thank God I hadn't gone on a 10 mi hike...lol...) and when I went back out to the pool I opened the FitBit app on my phone and it "synced" and that's when I realized it was at the bottom of the deep end!!! I couldn't believe it was still working... So of course I decided to just go ahead and dive in and get it... Even though I just opened my pool and the water is still freezing since I haven't turned the heater on yet.... Needless to say I thought I was going to have a heart attack...lol... I really think I need by head examined that I got so crazy over a FitBit! I mean I can laugh about it now... But yesterday I was on a MISSION!!! over that stupid thing...

I still think I'm gonna contact FitBit customer service and see if I can still get it replaced... this way I'll have it as back up... Because I have a feeling that I might "lose" it again and this way I won't have to deal with my own insanity like yesterday...lol... :D

If it's still working, I don't think they will replace it. When mine was replaced, they walked me through every step to get it to sync. And they could see it wasn't syncing.

I have had better luck just attaching it as is on my bra. Stays there better and no worry.

TripSwitch 05-06-2013 07:53 AM

I haven't bothered contacting FitBit to see what they have to say yet... I'm using the new one that I picked up on Friday... And if I weren't so intrigued by how many calories it says I should be eating to lose I probably wouldn't have run right out and replaced it... Although I am really liking the floors climbed feature... I've been climbing stairs like crazy just to earn those badges... I actually did 41 flights of stairs in my building one day last week.... And now I'm determined to get my 50 floors in one day badge next...

movielover 05-06-2013 01:24 PM

I didn't wear it all weekend so it could sit in rice just in case and it works perfectly!

They must have some sort of 30 days return policy, right?

I almost went out the other day to pick one up... But I really hate to be bothered with going to a store for something like that... Not really my idea of "shopping" that I like to do... But now if it's clothing or shoes... Let's just say you don't have to twist my arm... ;)

Although I'm gonna miss the "floors climbed" since the Flex doesn't have that...
I went a little crazy yesterday and nearly killed myself climbing 75 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS in my building all so I could earn that badge... And then last night while I was lying in bed with my legs aching all over... I started looking up info about Tower Running on my iPad... that's where they have races up the stairs of really tall skyscrapers all over the world... Actually, I've always wanted to do the Empire State Building Run Up Race that they have here every year, but it's by invitation only... Although I did find out with my little bit of research last night that you can get in if you raise money for charity... So who knows...? :D

I did that ONCE... and it was pretty funny... I made it through the marathon... but we had like a 3 hour drive home after, because the marathon was down in Philly and I literally couldn't get out of the car when we got home... lol... Actually, I don't think I could walk right for like a week after that little "experiment"... But hey, live and learn right...? :D

Just bought a fitbit Zip a little over a week ago now and I am loving it! I clip it on my bra every day.

I didn't go with the others because 1) the cost and I didn't know if I would use it a lot (I so do) and 2) I didn't care about the sleep part right now.

It makes me walk a LOT more! If anything it made me realize how much I do not walk because of work!
