The Dukan Diet

  • Hi Everyone!

This morning I weighed in and I stayed the same which was a surprise since I was off track for 5 days while in Chicago. Before the meeting started I spoke with my leader and told her I am going to give it exactly one more month and if I don't reach goal, I'm going to get a note from my doctor in order to start maintenance. I have been trying to get this last 10 pounds off for months now and it's just not happening. My trainer checked my body fat percentage and I'm almost to 25% which is where I should be for my height. That may be the reason I'm not losing like I was in the beginning, my body fat percentage is low.

My leader told me I could try the new Dukan Diet for a couple weeks to see if that may help get things going. It's a VERY restrictive plan but I'm willing to try anything at this point. She was technically NOT supposed to tell me to try any other plans but she and I have become pretty close which is why I think she told me.

Has anyone tried this? I know I may get flamed for this post but I have to do what's best for me right now. I only plan on doing this for one week and will continue tracking.
  • I haven't heard of it, but I think you have to do what you have to do! That's why I am watching calories more than pts+ now. I loose more when I am CC. My leader knows I am combining the programs, and it's working. Good luck Kim!!!

I'm a big fan of finding the plan that works for the person and not forcing the person into the plan.

I don't think you'll get flamed. Leastways not on 3FC. If what you need is to shake things up and trying combining programs (in a healthy way) to push through a plateau, then I think it's good.

And I sincerely hope it works to shake things up!

I'm afraid I don't know much about the plan, but I wanted to chime in to give you a little support so you don't feel bad about trying something different. We should never feel bad about finding what works for us.
  • I watched an episode of Dr Oz about the Dukan Diet, I thought it was interesting. It allows dairy but no veggies in the first phase from what I remember. I have about 16 pounds to get to goal and I've been gaining and losing the same 3 pounds for some time now. I'm going to start the 17 Day Diet on Thursday (after grocery day), it seems a little more realistic to me as a mom with small kids, they would be able to eat the same meals...good luck, and be sure to let us know how you make out if you try it!
  • The first phase seems highly restrictive. I imagine something that extreme low carb would get the scale moving. The only thing would be if you follow it for one week then go back to what you are doing, you might regain some/all weight lost. I've never really done the low carb thing but that seems to happen with friends and family that have, especially when it's very strict.

You're also very active, your energy might get impacted by the diet so just be careful and take it by ear if you decide to do it.

You need to do what you need to do, but just try to keep yourself happy and well in the process!
  • I tried the Dukan Diet for 5 days before I signed up for WW online. DD is very restrictive, and by the 3rd day, I was so sick of "pure proteins" and wanted a veg or fruit so badly. And I am a girl who loves her meat.

I think the maintenance plan for DD sounds pretty good, but I just couldn't do it anymore. I craved fruit, and while you can have vegetables on the second phase, I just could not see myself doing that diet for a few months before I started adding back in other foods.

In the week I did DD, I lost a grand total of 3 lbs. I gained that weight all back over the weekend between DD and WW. I am almost a week on WW now and I am down almost 5 lbs. And I can eat a lot more foods than I could on DD.

Have you thought of just getting more of your points from lean protein sources and fewer breads and grains over the next couple of weeks to see how that goes?

Oh and I almost forgot, I've heard that a lot of people get constipated on DD because of the lack of fiber (except for the 2T of oat bran).

I've read this post and the one where you vented after your first "tastes" of this diet. I say, do what you got to do! If that involves getting a note from your doctor, do it!! I have 125 as my ultimate goal, but if my body doesn't want to move past 135 or 130 or even 140 (gasp, I would still be overweight for my height!) then I am fine with it. I haven't set my lifetime goal with WW yet just because of that. (And honestly I am still a bit pissy with the fact that they base it on BMI).

Yeahhhh. I'm not a fan of that part, either. My "healthy weight range" is 117-146. The 146, eh, maybe. But 117? Please. Let me die laughing.

I actually want to keep some of my curves, which is why I set my goal weight to what I did. Fact is, I don't think I've been below 200lbs since early in high-school, like 14 or 15. Essentially half my life ago (I'm 29). 175 is my goal for right now. Once I get there I'll decide if I'm comfortable at that weight or want to continue and try to get in my "healthy range".
  • Tudor, I'm doing the same thing. I'm aiming for 175. The lowest weight I've seen as an adult is 195 and I only sustained that for one year. My "normal" is going to be very different than those stupid BMI charts!
  • I agree with you all about the BMI. Before that it really was just based on a height/weight chart. But, I'll just have to see what my body wants to be as I get closer, and if I need to I -will- get a note from my doctor so I'm able to set my goal weight where it should be and not where a chart says.
  • This Dukan diet seems like pure torturous ****! I dont think i could do it. I would be absolutely miserable.

I did however go to the Dukan site and put in my stats to see what "healthy" range i should be in based on my body structure... using the old wrist measurement to see if i am bigger framed or smaller framed. Anyhow, it says my weight goal should be at 174ish. My goal is at 150. I figured 150 would be reasonable, but i too want to keep my curves but be healthy. Maybe i wouldnt even be able to get to 150, it would just be too low for me. Maybe thats the case for you Kimberly, you have just reached a point where your body is very happy. Im sure thats entirely possible. Cause it seems like you are doing all the right stuff.
  • I went to the Dukan site to to figure out what they said my weight range is, and my "true weight" is 188 lbs. So about 40 lbs over what WW suggests (at the high end!), and almost 15 lbs more than my goal. Interesting.

(And apparently I really AM big-boned, haha)
  • What I found interesting is that the Dukan site factored in SUSTAINABILITY, not just "ideal" weight. I've never in my life sustained a weight under 200 pounds, so for me to think I can get to 145 and maintain there is laughable. I like that it gives realistic goals. Obviously at 183 (which is what they suggested) I would be MUCH healthier than I was a 340 (highest weight ever) or 279 (my restart weight).

I'm still aiming for 175 and I will speak to my doctor about it at my physical next month. :-)
