I'm seriously considering re-joining...

  • I originally joined weight watchers in 2007 when I was 18, and lost about 35 pounds. I looked HOT! But then I was 10 lbs away from goal, my body would not allow me to lose any more, couldn't afford the "doctors note" so I no longer had to pay, and I quit. however looking back, i think I COULD have lost 10 more pounds, and I got lazy. Anyway, I joined 2 more times after that, and gave up rather quickly. I tihnk I'm reay to do it once and for all. I moved to a new city with my hubby, don't know anyone, and i think this would be a goo way to meet some people, and get healthy. What do you like about weight watchers?? Any suggestions? What do you not like about it??
  • I've been doing weight watchers on and off over the past 10 years. What I love about it is that there is no forbidden food and it's not extreme, it's real life. It's learning to be healthy and choose wisely. The only thing I don't like is that you loose the weight slower than a lot of the "fad" diets. Sometimes I wonder if I should try one of these hollywood diets were people loose like 10 pounds in a week but I know that once your off one of these you'll just gain it back.

So good for you!!! I'm doing it again myself but on my own this time. My hubby is unemployed so I have to cut as many costs as I can.
  • Yeah, I really like ww, and I feel like it is something I can stick with. I just wnt to get to that darn goal so I won't have to pay! I probably won't be able to start until October, once my husband gets a job, and we get back on our feet financially. The very last time I joined, which was about 16 months ago, I ended up quitting because I didn't know anyone in the meeting, and no one talked to me... So I hope it doesn't happen again.
  • I love WW because nothing is restricted and I can adjust it to fit my lifestyle. I also love the meetings for the support and encouragement. It's the only program I've ever been successful with. Good luck to you!
  • I lose weight better in a group, too. For me, it's not the money or the program that works best for me, it's the weekly weigh-in and the desire not to waste my money (no matter what I'm paying).

I prefer exchange plans to "straight" calorie counting, and my husband and I are on disability, so we can't both afford to go to WW, so we chose TOPS (a non-profit weight loss group that allows you to follow any diet plan you want - many of the members are former WW members and are still following the WW plan). We paid less per year to be a member of TOPS than for one month of WW (a lot more, because we joined a group that waived your monthly dues of $3 each if you had 3 consecutive losses in a month).

Hubby didn't like the meetings and convinced me that we could do it on our own - but we haven't so I'm rejoining (he doesn't want to, so I'm going without him). I haven't officially joined yet - I decided to visit each of the three closest groups (you can attend a meeting or two before deciding to join - you just can't officially weigh in and can't participate in any of the contests until you join). I'm torn between a very small group on Monday night (closest to our home, but only 7 members, only 3 were at the meeting I sat in on. Monthly dues are $2 and you get free dues if you lose 1 lb or more per month, and they don't really do many contests or formal programs), and a large Tuesday night group ($5 per month, and you get free dues if you lose .25 lbs or more. They run a lot of contests, and are more boisterous - though I'm a little weirded out by the sing-a-longs. They start and end every meeting with silly weight loss songs).

I'm leaning toward the Tuesday night group, though I'd like to at least keep the option open that hubby might decide to join later (No way in Heaven or **** hubby will ever go to the singing group), but I decided I needed to go to the group that will help me most, and if hubby decides he would be willing to join, I would transfer to any group he wanted to go to (even Weight Watchers - which hubby has attended and didn't mind; though I don't think we could both afford to go until our car loan is paid off in a year or so).

I know I always write a book when I post (I seem to think with my fingertips).

Over the years, I was a WW member many times and while I always have liked, but I love TOPS. I find the contests and ways to earn my dues back fun and motivating, and I like the optional rallies and retreats that are available, even though I've only ever been to one a long time ago.

Hubby thinks TOPS is 'dorky' and it kind of is, but there's a little more incentive (for me) to stay on task. It's a lot harder to just weigh-in and bypass the meeting (some groups don't allow more than a set amount of unexcused absences, though most are pretty lenient - but you're not eligible for any of the rewards and contests if you don't stay for the meeting).

As usual, I've written a novel where a few lines probably would have sufficed. Sorry.
