WW and PCOS

  • Tonight I will be going to my 4th WW meeting and so far and have lost and gained back one pound. I have been diligent about figuring my points and right everything down before I eat it. My husband is on the diet with me and he has lost 7 lbs so far. I know there is a difference between men and women but could my PCOS be prohibiting me from losing weight on this plan. I am currently on the Flex plan and am thinking about changing to Core but I feel like that may not work either. Has anyone else with PCOS faced this problem?
  • I had the same problem myself. I just posted about it this morning on another thread, I can't link to it, but I'll copy and paste. (it's a long post)

Someone asked what my recent losing trend was about (9 pounds in two weeks after being stalled for 8 weeks on WW)...I really think it's because I've changed my exercise intensity and switched my diet back to something that works for me. Since December 06 I've been walking, usually about 3 miles a day. That equates to between 45-60 minutes at the track on most days. I figure out of the last two years I've worked out more days than I've missed. At first the losses came easy, but then last year (on Thanksgiving) I finally hit 171, my lowest in probably 3 years. Then I stalled, for months. I stayed between 171-175 until this July, when I got a horrible sinus infection. The kind that has you considering assisted suicide because the pain is unbearable. While I was sick I figured out that eating something cold helped the pain in my jaw/head/neck where the infection settled. Ben & Jerry became my new best friends. I ended up gaining back to 185, and dropping out of the last challenge. So when this challenge started, I started over again. But walking and weight watchers (I'd switched to WW from SBD) weren't working this time. I thought I'd yo-yo'd my way to permanent obesity. For 5 weeks I had a total of 0 losses. Then I took a good look at what I was doing, talked to my DH and my Doctor. Doctor agrees that I most likely have PCOS, and that a lower "bad" carb diet would be better for me with this condition. So I went back to a hybrid SBD-Atkins induction for the last two weeks, in addition to watching my total calorie intake. I've been sugarfree/flourfree since 10/19. I've switched up my normal walking for an hour routine to running the C25K every other day. I'm trying the 30DS, I know I need to incorporate weight training into my routine.

Walking is still my favorite form of exercise. It's my "me" time, the time I focus on myself and unwind. And I think WW is a great program and most people would do very well to follow that program. But what I've learned through trial and error is that just like no two snowflakes are the same, no two bodies are the same either. What would work for most people wasn't working for me, at least not anymore.
  • yes and core works great for me!
  • I have PCOS and flex has worked for me. I just finished my 5th week and have lost 10.2 lbs.

What has worked for me is still keeping my carbs in check. I don't eat rice and rarely eat white potato. I eat high fiber, low carb bread, but only 1 serving a day, usually for breakfast or lunch.

Try limiting your bad carbs and see if that works for you. Good luck!! Hang in there!!!
  • sbhoover2002 - to 3FC and especially to the WW boards. We have a forum here at 3FC, called Dieting With Obstacles, and one section of it deals with PCOS/Insulin Resistance. Link is below. There is a lot of info there you may want to read. Please be sure and come back over here to WW, though, where you will find a lot of encouragement and support on your WW journey.

Btw, if you gals would like to start your own WW w/PCOS Club, please do!
  • Thanks g35 and Jane. I'll be sure to check out the other thread. I appreciate your encouragement and suggestions.
  • Hi sbhoover! I have have been living with PCOS for over 12 years now _ I was diagnosed with it at 16.

I am on WW Flex and have lost over 40 pounds so far. The key really is to watch your sugar and carbs. This doesn't mean you can't have it, but I try to limit my carbs to 2-3 servings per day. I also find that when I eat them with a protein, it doesn't affect my body as much. I do cardio daily, modifying intensities every other day, and I think this helps as well.

It is possible to lose weight and have carbs, just choose "good" ones - high fiber, while grains and stick with it! Also keep in mind that for many PCOS'ers it takes longer to lose weight because of the IR problem!

and we hope to see you around again!
