I would say as long as they have no pasta in them they would fall under Core but I don't know for sure.

I know that Progresso has a couple of 'Light' soups. I was thinking of buying the 0 pt soup..until I looked at the Nutrition Facts. One of the soups had 960 mg of sodium! I have HBP, and I need to watch my sodium intake. I'm kind of surprised that WW would endorse a food which could be bad for you :(.

Most people, even many with high blood pressure don't have a problem with sodium. For example, I have high blood pressure, but my blood levels of sodium are always extremely low, occasionally too low. I even had to be on supplements for a couple weeks before minor surgery. My blood levels of sodium were so low, I could have had a heart attack during surgery if we didn't raise my sodium levels. My tendency to have low sodum levels is partially due to the type of blood pressure medication I am taking, and partially because I'm not a real fan of very salty foods, so my diet is fairly low sodium without even trying, partially due to my drinking quite a bit of water, and partially just due to the way my body works.

I do wish that foods were canned with far less salt, not only for those who are sensitive to sodium, but because I don't care for the taste. Equally as unpleasant are foods that are labeled "low-sodium," but have potassium chloride added. Potassium chloride is a mineral salt that contains no sodium, so it is used as a salt substitute. So the food is still too salty and has a metallic aftertaste to boot.

Have you seen how much sodium is in a Subway Sub or a Frozen Meal or even any food from a restaurant? W/W made a contract with Progresso like they did with Applebees. It is all about money with the partnership/promotion.

Also as stated in the previous post many people don't have a problem with sodium and since that is an individual reaction/response each person has to do what is right for them.

I usually eat the whole can for lunch, so I'm getting a ton of sodium I guess. But otherwise, they taste good, fill me up and get some fiber & veggies. It's a lot healthier than what I see my co-workers eating. I like all the different varieties except the barley one.

Even though my sodium levels are low, I do tend to retain water in response to sodium, so I have to remember to drink an extra glass or two of water if I eat salty foods. It may seem weird to fight water with water, but it works.

Kaplods, I too have a problem with retaining fluid. Morning weight is almost always higher than my evening weight(rings are alot looser at night). I will try your drink more water theory. I hope it works. THANKS!
As far as the soups, LoVe eM'. I usually have the whole can with some steamed veggies and a slice of 1/2 point bread toasted with spray butter. Fills me up then I have my skinny cow (2 points) ice cream sandwich later.

they sell them at costco now too! Its 10.50 for 20 cans which is a great deal! I love these soups and they are going to come in handy for me as ways to be get full when I dont have a lot of points to spair!

Briza 10-23-2007 07:21 PM

ok-i was really wrong-you get 8 cans for around 10 dollars at costco but its still a good deak considering they are around 2.70 from the grocery store.

murphmitch 10-23-2007 11:00 PM

They're 2 for $3.00 at Walmart right now.

I had a can for dinner last night and I am magically up one pound today... way too high in sodium!

kelijpa 10-31-2007 08:48 PM

I like the regular minestrone, it's like 4 points for the whole can, I think, and lots of veggies, so if you're looking for something with a few more points you might want to try that. I also like campbell's select healthy request italian wedding soup, I believe it's 5 for the whole can and very satisfying. You just need to find something you like and stay away from the cream based soups.

I got to try the southwest veggie one last night and it was really good. I am sensitive to too much sodium ( I get sausage fingers the next day  ) but I only ate 1/2 the can and today I am good. I thought this tasted awesome and I would love to keep this flavor on hand. It would be wonderful with some chicken in it :)

All non-cream based soups are not core - soups with white rice, pasta, noodles are not core.

mamasan521 11-12-2007 10:37 PM

I LOVE these soups! They are great for a mid afternoon snack. I work from 7 to 4 and come home with 3 VERY hungry children. If I don't eat something just before I go home, I want to eat all of their afternoon snacks. The SW one smells like a bag of Doritos! I don't find them too salty but most canned soups do have a lot of sodium in them. I find them in our local grocery store, near the very end of the Progresso line near the bottom. They have a large WW symbol on them.

I also have to force myself to eat breakfast as I can't eat so early in the AM or I'm STARVING by 10. But if I wait too long, I may miss my "window of opportunity." A Fiber One bar works great as its quick, dense and very yummy. Sometimes I have leftover points, too. I drink a mug of warm milk with a dash of vanilla and splenda just before bed. That's 2 points right there. And the warm milk helps me sleep.
