Kettlebells
Ever wonder what to do with those kettle bells in the corner at the gym? Here's a great site! Of course, they are trying to sell you dvd's, but there is plenty of free information and videos on the site:
www.shihan.com Enjoy- just be careful ;) The previous site has turned into a sales only site, with very little information. If you want to get kettle bell training dvds, they look good. Here is another site with some informative articles: Kettle Bell Training Mel |
This link has a bunch of short videos on technique. Its pretty interesting.

And some more great videos!

I've worked with them.. Great work out - really gets your heart rate up too!!! Bonus.
Kettlebells are a lot of fun!
Lift Kettlebells .com is a fairly new site but they have TONS of videos!
I was browsing through Amazon last night, I see the FIRM program is scheduled to release their kettlebell workout (along with a 5 lb KB) on Sept. 2.
that seems like a pretty light weight....some of these sites recommend starting with a 15-20 lb. weight, that's a lot of wt. to swing around if you are doing upper body? |
that is interesting. it depends but I think 5lbs is way too light, even 10 lbs is probably too light for most people. 15-20 lbs is a good starting weight. We have up to 45 lbs which I will use for 2 arm swings.
I liked the liftkettlebells website, there is lots of information (gee you can get them at Target)....if i try it, i would start with a 10 lb. because i have compromised use of my left shoulder due to an accident a few years ago.
I wish my gym had them so i could try them....can you get the same results from swinging a 10 lb. dumbbell? |
Kettlebells are actually great for shoulder rehabilitation. I think you can get some results from a 10 lb kettlebell but I think the goal would to move up some.
I was reading the review for the *kellenetics* which they compared to swinging around a paperwt....(its 4 lbs)...I think I based me apprehension on those type of dancy movements...or my clumsiness and swinging it through the sliding glass door, my face, killing the cat.....etc.
oh, the kettlebells I've done have no dancy moves but it'd be interesting what The Firm comes up with. At first, I had a bit of apprehension using them but I don't anymore.
I pre-ordered the Firm version (its $18.99 on amazon) and can pick up a heavier kettlebell at Target if i want to play around with it.....they are cheap enough and the Gofit ones are vinyl coated...(i don't know why i like that but the colors are nice)...we'll see how it goes, it's over a month until it comes out.
All my kettles are GoFit (from 10-45 lbs). I bought them at Target and Dick's. The GoFit kettlebell does come with a little dvd but not quite a workout. I have the gofit kettlebell workouts, volume 1 and 2 though.
as dumb as this sounds.....my first thought when I saw a kettlebell was that it was to be used for the sport of CURLING....(which i have only seen once on Canadian TV)....i couldn't believe that Curling was being promoted as a gym exercise....i thought they had some kind of oil to be used on wood floor surface...(like bowling)...i felt very blonde when i realized it was something else.
