Adjustable Weights
 

I'm getting back into lifting and am looking for some recommendations on good adjustable dumbbells to buy. Or do most people stick with just buying the next weight up in regular dumbbells? How high of a weight can you get in the adjustable ones? Right now I'm doing body weight exercises and seeing results.

I saw one at Target that went up to 25 pounds but it was ridiculously expensive, I thought. I've looked online, too, and found ones that went from 20 to 40, but they're $150 or more. Yikes! I think changing the weights would be a pain, too.

Powerblocks are high quality and will last you YEARS! No parts to break and very secure unlike many other adjustables. They are not cheap but you get what you pay for. I'm very happy with mine.

I have a set of the Bowflex Selectech's that go up to 52# each. They also have some that go to 90# each but I didn't see a need for that much weight. Mine are adjustable from 2.5# to 52# in 2.5 lb increments and that is a great range for me, as I do like resistance training. They're expensive, but after researching they seemed to be the most reliable and easy to use for adjustable weights. Plus I was able to get a deal on them by purchasing the "floor model" - the ones that they'd been using as their demonstration units. There was nothing wrong with them, they just didn't come with their original boxes. Amazon has good deals on adjustable weights frequently. If you add up what it would cost (and how much floor space it would take) to have a good selection of weights, usually an adjustable set is worth the money.

I have a Bowflex set that goes up to 20 + a range of kettlebells/free weight higher up. Bowflex has an Ebay clearance store as far as I remember, might be worth it to check it out.

I can't remember what brand I have. I bought if from Sears. It's definitely worth the money. You never know how heavy you can eventually lift until you start working your way though the weights. For that reason alone, I think it's a good investment.
