Suggestions on Medicine Ball

So I've decided that I want to invest in a medicine ball but they come in a wide range of weights and I've never used on before. I currently do high reps of 8 or 10 pound weights and low reps of 30 pound weights. I've never used a medicine ball before so I have no idea what sort of weight would work best for me. Can anyone who has some experience with them let me know what sort of weight I should be looking for?

Hmmm. Well, it's kind of depends upon what exercises you are doing. When I use a med ball I usually reach for a 8lb if I'm doing something that requires more "control" of the ball. Like if I'm passing it in the air around my waist, or doing figure eights with a full squat at the bottom.

Below is a video link to a med ball workout. If I were going to do this one...and I should also admit, I haven't done this one yet I just found it for demo purposes, I would probably use an eight as well.

You may also want to see if there is a sporting goods resale shop. I know that when I was purchasing equipment for myself I haunted the "Play It Again Sports" places and could find a few deals.

Thanks for the advice Lydia. I was going to just order one on Amazon but sporting goods stores probably would be a better idea since I can start using it them the same day. :D

I may have posted this before, but if you have an old basketball or kid's red rubber ball that doesn't hold air anymore, some sand, and duct tape, you can make your own medicine ball. This doesn't save any time over one-click shopping on Amazon, of course, but the price is right & it's a good way to reuse.

I agree that 8 lbs is a good place to start.

I hold a medicine ball while I walk on the treadmill. I started with the 8 lb. variety as well. Now, up around 15.

They have medicine balls with handles at Academy, and I'm sure many other stores that concentrate on sports, etc. Those work best for the treadmill.

I do medicine ball cleans, wall balls, med ball sit ups, usually with a 15 pd or 20.
