Cottage Cheese & Sodium

OK, so I tried the cottage cheese again today. Does anyone sense it's really high in sodium? I really got a taste of this today and it surprised me. I think I ate more than I've ever been able to before, so maybe that's why I noticed it. It had 11% of the RDA for sodium, which seemed high considering the amount. It was your standard Breaker's, and I was really thankful I had the fruit to cut out the salty taste. Just thought it was worth asking - I can't post in food bc I can't keep up with visiting different forums - I forget to go back and check for responses. Figured the highest number of cc eaters were probably in this forum anyway. ;)

Look for a "no salt added" version. I use both depending on what I am mixing it with and there is a substantial difference. In the Hood brand name, there is anyway. Mixing it with fruit or protein powder, I definitely opt for the no salt added variety. Mixing it with Natural Peanut Butter or in a salad, I usually go with the regular.

Sometimes the local dairy brands have less sodium though I almost always add fruit and don't notice the sodium. You are right though, this group is big on the cottage cheese.

I agree there is a very high sodium content in cottage cheese, which I can also taste. I have never seen a low sodium CC in Canada though :(

i haven't seen it here either, eileen. i'm going to go to some online shopping sites like Safeway.com to see if they offer anything.

The sodium really isn't that high.... some brands just seem to taste saltier even with the same sodium content. If you have a Safeway or one of their "Safeway by another name" stores- like our Genuardi's is really safeway- try the Lucerne brand. It doesn't taste salty to me, but has the same sodium content as PennMaid and Calorie Counter, both which do taste salty. Weird.

Have you tried Friendship?

Interesting. I never notice the salty taste. I usually by the grocery store brand, which is "Kroger by another name" - in my case Fred Meyer. I've not tried Lucerne - the "Safeway by another name" is across the highway and the  to get to after work.

I haven't seen Friendship around here, but yes, they do carry Lucerne @ Safeway. I used to like Genuardi & Giant in Pa, but the Giant here is run by a different corporation - not the one in Camp Hill. They have SuperFresh here, but I've never liked that chain. Weis and Mars is our other choice.

Oh, and the watermelon - it was a bit "meaty," like very dense and heavy. I think I like a lighter texture traditional watermelon better.
