I'm new to all of this. I have two 5 pound weights and two 10 pound weights.
I just need basic advice on how to start out on working out my muscles in general and which exercises I need to do. I need to work on my stomach, thighs, and upper arms the most. I don't know where to start or what to do. |
Hi Gamer! Look at the sticky section above, and read the last one: weight lifting - where to get started. Then read all the others of interest to you, because that's basically where all the good information is stored. Then feel free to read the old threads here, and when you find some information that applies to your situation - body type, weight loss goals, body type, etc., let us know what you're going to try and people will be glad to give you some tips! Welcome.

I just started working out w/weights about 3-4 weeks ago. One thing to be careful of -- don't over do it when just starting out! I did with bicep curls and hammers and was in excruciating pain for 3 days or so. Take it easy, you will acclimate pretty quickly. I like feeling the muscles that I've worked on but not to the point of pain. My quads were also pretty darn sore when I first started doing squats and lunges. Had to ease down those stairs for a day or two! Maybe start w/3 lbs. weights for some parts (like triceps) and get some 8 lb weights too. Going from 5 lbs. to 10 lbs. as a beginner may be too much of an increase.

Have to agree, Jo, about going from 5 to 10 lbs. with some exercises. Often I have to use 1 lb. plate-mates on arm and shoulder exercises because adding 5 lbs. is just too much.
