I think Pookie gave some good advice. I don't know if you are having yours done laproscopically or not, but I did. I thought, "Mine will be a snap to get over, since it's laproscopically". It wasn't. I wasn't prepared mentally for how hard it was going to be. When they go rearanging your inards, it's a major deal. No matter how they go about doing it.

I agree with Pookie, go shopping before you have the surgery. I didn't do much, and then when I sent my husband, it was hard to explain some of the thing that I wanted him to get. Another thing I didn't know about until after surgery, and I came here to ask about was how much sugar you can have before it will cause you to dump. I was amazed at how many things have sugar. Anyway I was told 15 grams of sugar and under. Also, that the amout of fat in things doesn't matter that much because we aren't able to eat much. That really helped me in choosing what I could and couldn't have. I have found that now, I can have pretty much anything that I want. I use to have a sweet tooth, but now things with sugar are way too sweet. It's almost like my taste buds have change. I use to be a big coca-cola drinker. I know that we aren't suppose to drink carbonated beverages, but I did try a little once, and I can't drink it now. It tastes to sweet, and the carbonation feels weird. I don't even crave it now.

I bought a couple of new night gowns, and house coat before I went in. I usually wear pajama pants, because I hate for my legs to touch when I'm sleeping. I lived in those gowns for about three weeks. I took some scented body soap, too. It was just for a warm fuzzy feeling. Oh, and I had a room mate in the hospital. On the day that she started to eat she had her first dumping. I'm not sure what caused it. They only give you what they know you can have. She had a huge accident in the bed, a couple of times. Anyway, when I was getting my little bag ready for the hospital, I got a small travel size air freshener. I was so happy to have that can of freshener....let me tell you! When she went off to the bathroom, I sprayed the air. I don't know if you will have a room mate, but that was the best thing I bought for the hospital. I can't think of anything else. I hope this helps. Good luck with your surgery!

Hi I had gastric bypass last year on October 18th!!! I can hardly believe that it has been a whole year.
I wanted to ad to the list above and make a couple of comments.
One thing that I found out the first weekend after surgery was that the food the hospital fed me had way to many carbs in it. I tried to duplicate their meals when I got home they had pasta in them and man did I suffer.
So I stuck to clear chicken broth. Eddy's no sugar popsicles. Jello. Cream of wheat.
Very plain and boring but you really don't feel like eating alot after surgery.
The program that I am absolutely discourages the use of protein drinks so make you find out about this. Whether you agree or disagree with this you want to adhere to the program you have gone with.
Good luck on your surgery and God bless. You will do great!!!

Pookie,
I am sorry that it took me so long to reply. I had to think about this...my mind gets a little fuzzy
What I tried to do at least initially was to get as much protein in as I could each day.
The things that I ate (consumed) to do this were scrambled eggs, skim milk, chicken broth (w/ ground chicken), yogurt, cream of wheat. All of these things have protein in them.
I was very mindful that I needed to consume my protein first before anything else but I didn't drive myself. My biggest hurdle was the water. It takes alot of sips each day to get as much water as they'd like you to consume. At least for me all I could do was take small sips to start out with.
Hope this is helpful.

Hi Pookie, I still have trouble "eating" all my protein, so I am still drinking the protein shakes. Do whatever works, right?
