Thinking about WLS

  • Hey. My name is Aradia, and I've been lurking here for awhile. I've also been looking into WLS, but I dont know if its the right step for me. I got to a therepist Monday to start my 'evulation'. What I was wanting is to find out the pros and cons from people who have been or are in my shoes. I dont have long to post, I'm off to work, but any words of wisdom will be loved. Have a wonderful day.
  • aradia.. glad you found us!!! and every single person you talk to will tell you several things. first. this isn't the answer for everyone. second. ya still gotta do the work. eat right. exercise. drink water. no binging. no psychological eating. third. the first three months ARE NOT EASY [and p-38 will certainly tell you all about that!!!!] but it DOES GET EASIER. fourth some people have serious complications, and others don't and there's no way of telling beforehand who will be who. fifth ya gotta take your vitamins FOR LIFE.

was it worth it? for me, absolutely. for you? i can't make that decision.

sooooo. read all the stuff that's around here. ask all the questions you can think of. and hang out!!!
  • Hi Aradia,

I'm glad you're doing your research first instead of just jumping in and deciding to change your life forever with WLS. I read too many posts on other boards from people who had no idea what they were in for, so I think the more you know the better off you are.

Since I am one of the people around here who had LapBand surgery and not RNY, I have to throw in my two cents about researching all the different kinds of surgeries. I thought about getting the bypass and probably would have done fine with it, but am very happy I'm banded. I just throw that out there to make sure you know that there are choices to be made, depending on your surgeon and your situation. The big three are RNY gastric bypass, Adjustable Gastric Band (LapBand) and DS (Duodenal Switch). Research them all and read pros and cons for each because each has its merits and problems.
