Frustrated

  • Hello There!!

I have reached week four of my post op. Hard to believe.
In the first two weeks after surgery I lost 20lbs the past two weeks I haven't lost anything at all
My scale is stuck at 240 lbs Okay I will admit that I don't do everything right as far as WLS protocal. I just don't have a very large appetite and some things just seem to get "stuck" going done. I have one episode yesterday where the food came right back up. Chicken was too dry. It sure would be nice to be able to have something to drink while I am eating, this has been a big adjustment for me.
I haven't been exercising as much as I should. I finally had to see a chiropracter for the intense pain in my left hip and my surgeon put me on anti inflamatories.
So I don't want to whine here but if I went through all of "this" for 20 lbs I am going to be severely disappointed
Did anyone else go through something similar??
    Thank you for Listening
    Kathy
  • Kathy my sister had the surgery on sept 3 and she was stuck for about 2-3 weeks at one weight but she has started losing again. She hasnt done things perfect either but she is now getting were she can eat more things and is learning what will not work. Chicken is too dry for her too. But she handles cottage cheese and just about any type of cheese settles well on her. I think that period was the most frustrating for her and for us because we saw how depressed she was because she wasnt losing. It will pass and do your best to get your protein in.
    Good luck.
  • Chicken and tuna made me sick right after my surgery too. Try eating the dark meat. It's moister and goes down easier. Your body is probably just taking a small break but your weight will come off very fast, don't loose hope. I had my surgery on June 10th and after weighing myself this morning I'm down 86 pounds!!!! I've gone from a size 24/26 to a 16. I feel awsome!! Just keep eating slow and drinking tons of water. Getting in the water is my hardest daily challange. Congrats on the 20 pounds! That's awsome for only 2 weeks post op!
  • I'll be 3 weeks post op tomorrow. I seem to stay at the same weight then the next day see a difference. We are so new to this that I know we won't stay at this weight. Try not to get frustrated you'll see a difference.

I started eating chicken last week and I like to mix it with cottage cheese to help it get down. I made chicken last night for dinner and had a little bit of a gravy on it so it would be easier or if I put a little bit of spinach with it.
  • Boy I can feel the frustration. I am 10 weeks post op and the weight came off the first 4 weeks and then I stop and lose about 2 pounds every other week. I at a total weight loss since surgery of 27 pounds. I don't get all of the protien inn I had some trouble with chicken and fish too eating too fast and food too dry. It is a big learning process and I suppose that we will still be learning. We did not get this way overnight. The one good thing that I keep focusing on is the fact that I have been taken off all of the Diabetic Med and Half of my Blood pressure medicine. For that I am thankful. There is nothing esle to do I have been assured that the weight will come off. Just not soon enough for me. Grammy
  • sorry to have been a posting slug the past few days..

ladies.. it's all ok. you can actually have a little bit of gravy. some broth to moisten meat. some sauce. anything that helps the protein go down. after all, how much of it will you be eating??? certainly not a half a cup or anything even close to that!!!!

and please remember. what works one day may not work the next. give that particular food a few days rest and then try it again.

and tiny bites. about the size of your pinkie nail. eating anything bigger has a greater risk of getting stuck.

    chew chew chew chew.

as for the weight loss... as long as you're doing what you're supposed to, it'll come off. honest!!! sometimes our bodies just take a break. after all, you've been through the trauma of surgery, and now the food restriction. just make sure you keep up with the protein, water, and exercise.

my pattern was to lose 10 pounds one week, and nothing for the next 10 days. it all depends on your body's reaction.

from where i sit, you're all doing GREAT!!!!!!
  • Kathy, Amy said the same thing. She lost a lot fast, then nothing at all, with about the same timing as you. Then all of a sudden, the weight loss began again. It must have been a frustrating and frightening moment to think it was all for nothing!

    Hang in there
  • Thank you guys for your support Yes I have been feeling down the past week.
I have to go for another post op check on Wednesday, I hope they don't "yell" at me. Well they don't really yell they just give you a good talking too
I have some underlying medical problems that I keep wondering if they are slowing my weight loss. First, I am hypothyroid but my meds should be adressing this. Second, I am insulin resistant and I am not sure how this affects me but my surgeon let me know ahead of time that my weight loss would be more difficult.
Third, I was diagnosed with PCOS and I know that this causes obesity as well.
Well thanks again for your support.
    Kathy
  • kathy... it sounds like you have some hurdles, but a really great attitude.. here's a bit more food for thought.

i'm hypothyroid as well. and someone in my support group told me that the makers of synthorid are concerned about the absorption of their drug in WLS patients. apparently, the pill is designed to react with stomach acid, and we don't have any. sooooo, i started chewing mine. they don't taste bad at all, and it's been working really well for me. ask your doctor about this..

as for the insulin resistance, some experts think that just about every single one of us who is heavy enough to qualify for the surgery has insulin resistance. not sure if this is true, but it's an interesting thought.

and PCOS. another tough one. some folks think that the wls reduces the severity of PCOS, and others don't. let's view it as an interesting experiment!

    keep us posted!!!!
  • Jiffy,
I just realized looking at your post that you are coming up on a two year anniversary of your WLS in January man that is great
    Congrats to you!!!
Thank you for the suggestion about chewing the synthyroid, you are right it doesn't taste too bad. I have been breaking mine down into to smaller pieces but will try to chew them. I have to have my "levels" checked in a week or so.
When I go to the DRs wed. I will check on the other issues.
Again everyone thank you for your support
