Hi all I'm thinking of having Weight loss surgery. I thought of it a year ago even had the psych eval appt and chickened out. So now I have to go to the seminar again and start the process over again. I was just diagnosed with sleep apnea can anyone tell me if they have to do the surgery any different when you have apnea. It seems like I watched an episode of Big Medicine and they had to put a tube down a mans throat while he was awake and they said it was because of sleep apnea and he was screaming. So that really scared me. So if anyone could tell me about this. I'm just trying to do my research right now. So thanks for any help.

The reason they had to tub him that way, was because of his size and trouble he had had previously during surgery. I love that show. It has been a lot of good information of the road we all have chosen. I have sleep apnea too and was told that there would be no problems. Hope that this helps.

With sleep apnea, you have to bring your CPAP for surgery.

I haven't heard anything negative about surgery and people who have sleep apnea. Most hospitals will put you to sleep before they insert any tubes / catheters. One way to find out is ask your doctor but don't get yourself upset before you find out (yeah I know...its hard).

i've never heard of anyone with sleep apnea being intubated BEFORE they're put to sleep!!! i had apnea going in. and, like stef said, i had to take my CPAP. it wasn't a big deal. they DID have to put a tube in - and the reason is because anesthesia depresses your breathing ANYWAY. in people without apnea, this isn't a big deal, but in people WITH apnea, there's a risk that the person's breathing will slow down to dangerous levels.

it's fine. ask your doc, and then find something else to worry about!!!
