Default Dieter's enemy #1 : Mom

I was doing my workout [TurboJam] this afternoon. I'm incredibly self conscious; I don't like people to watch me. But, hubby was in the room with the kids, and that was OK. We are living with my parents at the moment, and have been for the last five years since I was pregnant with our oldest daughter. We're moving out, and this is one of the reasons why.

My mother comes in, plops herself down, and sighs. As I'm panting while I move to the floor for the mat portion, she says, "It's amazing [or something like that]. Before all this modern stuff, housewifes never needed to do this to stay thin."

My knee jerk reaction, "Mother, don't be a such a CENSOR."

She teared up - a common reaction when she's caught being such an, y'know - and said "I was talking about myself!" A lie, of course.

I ignored her and continued my workout. Finished, popped in another disk. My father gets home from work. Now, this is where I draw the line and she knows it. My father makes remarks about how it's so silly and I don't need to do it [not in a nice, honey, you don't need to lose any weight kind of way] or that it's a waste of time, yada yada. So, what does she do? "Oh, darling, let's eat out in the living room and watch Becky exercise."

I held my head up and continued on for another 10 minutes before getting so obscenely embarrassed that I fled the room. And here I am.

I know what you mean. I don't exercise in front of people. Ever. Unless it's one of those rare occasions that I'm actually at the gym, and even then I stay on the machines. I wouldn't dare take a roll on the balls or stretch or anything like that. So talk about rubbing salt into an open wound! It sounds like it's high time to move out. Too much family in one house for such a long time would make ANYONE b*@ch their mother out. quite frankly, I'd've torn all of my hair out by now. And hers.

Besides, sometimes mothers can be... That's all I have to say about that.

Ugh! People can be so insensitive!

I'm happy to hear you're moving out. No one needs to listen to that kind of negativity, ever. Especially from family though.

One more for the road!

Your MOM?? My grandmother's worst- even though she doesn't SAY ANYTHING, she loves to watch and chuckle as if she's got some sort of invisible friend next to her, telling her some secret about me. I really like living alone for that reason.

I never like to exercise in front of other people either. It's Me time as far as I am concerned. I shut my bedroom door and tell everyone to stay out.
