The morbidly obese bride

I am getting married soon. I am also currently at my highest all time weight.

My stomach is now the biggest part of my body- it sticks out further than my boobs.

I am worried I will not fit in the airplane seat. I am worried that I will not look good. And people will not thing, "Oh doesn't she look nice" when I come down the aisle, but "Oh doesn't she look fat"

I told my fiance that if I lose a good amount of weight withint a year or so we are putting the finery back on and getting more pictures taken.

I am on a new weightloss plan. I am slowly tapering my calories down to the right amount, signed up for a weightloss class, and am going to start pilates.

You have a solid 7 weeks to lose what you can. Stay positive and make the most of this time. You can do it!

shyla2001 05-28-2006 01:03 AM

Think positive, and get the support you need here on the boards! I know it's a minute-by-minute struggle sometimes, but you can do it!

chick_in_the_hat 05-28-2006 01:23 AM

I like the idea of taking new pics in a year - it's a nice goal to work towards.

But you can do a lot in 7 weeks - I see you've lost 13 pounds already. :bravo: You won't be at goal - but you'll feel so good you won't care. :woo: on your engagement as well. :D

I was about the same size you are now when I started - it took me a year to lose 100 pounds. Calorie counting (keeping my calories an average of 1400 calories a day) and walking an hour a day were all I did...although I now have added weight training and I wish I had done that earlier...I had a lot of loose skin that is finally toning up.

As far as what other people are thinking....to heck with them. All brides are beautiful! Just ask your DF!

jillybean720 05-28-2006 09:52 AM

I fly Southwest all the time. I'm back up to about 290 and just flew last weekend. I, too, have a large stomach (out past my boobs--not difficult since I'm only a B cup :p ). I have never had a problem fitting in the seats on the plane. I like to pull the armrest between my seat and my boyfriend's seat up so it feels less contraining (assuming you're flying with the groom). If you have any difficulties, I know the flight attendants can supply an extender for your seat belt. I can't usually pull down the tray table thingy in front of me because my tummy is too big for it to go down all the way, so I don't use that at all.

If you want to feel a bit more confident in your gown (though I'm sure you look beautiful at ANY weight), you might try doing a low-carb diet just until the wedding. You're supposed to lose most of your weight from your middle when you start losing with low-carb. It may not be something you can sustain forever, so it may not be the right plan for you for the long term, but if you want to actually "diet" for a special event, it can be helpful for a lot of people :^:

Tirzah 05-28-2006 10:02 AM

I just flew a few weeks ago and I was fine in the seat. I'm the same weight as you. It was a little snug but I could fit. I know I worried a lot about it before hand and had worries about what I would do if I couldnt fit :( Anyway, my experience was that the seats were okay.

I agree with the other girls, stay positive and make the most of the weeks to come. You can do it girl!

sweettay 05-28-2006 11:31 AM

you have 7 weeks to lose more weight that is almost 2 months you can lose a noticiable amount of weight in that lenght of time:carrot:

dont worry about the sits on the plane you are letting your fear take over I flew with my friend 3 weeks ago and she is 300 plus and she had no problems

stop letting fear take over your mind, you are going to be a beautiful bride enjoy every second of what is going to be one of the most special days of your life, dont worry about what other people are thinking it's your day so cherish it:hug:

Jordan1975 05-28-2006 11:36 AM

I agree with the other posters. 7 weeks is long enough to make some real progress. I tell ya what though... you're in love! And i've never seen anyone that doesn't look beautiful while they're in love. :)

lilybelle 05-28-2006 12:00 PM

Congratulations on your up-coming wedding. You will be a beautiful bride. Look forward to it and enjoy yourself. Don't worry so much about the weight, your DF loves you and you have your whole life ahead of you.

ScarlettDrawl 05-28-2006 01:25 PM

I agree with pp. I'm getting married on June 10th (less than 2 weeks!). I'm so happy that it wouldn't matter to me about what others might be thinking. I'm marrying my baby and that's wonderful. With that said, I have been trying to maintain my weight until the wedding (dress fits like a dream) and will dive headfirst back into weight loss mode after the wedding. Congratulations! Hope everything goes perfectly.

alwaysbelieve 05-28-2006 01:41 PM

I agree with everyone. You can only do the best you can and feel good about your wedding.
Congratulations on your upcoming wonderful wedding day.

Misti in Seattle 05-28-2006 02:10 PM

Congratulations on your big day! And yah, hey if you do have to ask for a seatbelt extender just do it and think about the fact that you are making progress and NEXT time won't have to do it!! :)

NinaV 05-28-2006 07:56 PM

Don’t let all of that spoil your special day. Thrust me, it’s not important how skinny you look coming down the isle, what IS important is that the person you’re marrying loves you for who you are and sees you as beautiful at any weight.
I was about 130lbs when I got married 10 years ago. As you can see from my ticker I am hovering around 300 now. Thrust me, the only thing that’s important to me now is that my DH has been and will be there for me through thick and thin (pun intended), which is why he is the man I married.
I know it’s almost impossible to get all the self-consciousness put away when you are the center of attention, but try focusing more on the fact that you ARE beautiful no matter the number on the scale. And you are entering in to a very special part of your life that you will get to share with the man you love and who loves you just as you are.
By the way, congratulations, and best wishes to both of you guys.

lunameow 05-29-2006 09:34 PM

One of the most beautiful brides I've seen weighed over 300 pounds. And, conversely, I've seen some rather not-beautiful ones who were super-thin. The difference was in their expressions. You could see which ones were nervous or just plain unhappy to be getting married, and they looked terrible, no matter what their size. But I have never seen a happy, glowing, in-love bride who didn't look absolutely stunning, no matter what size, what they wore, how they wore their hair, or anything else. It's all in the attitude, and it sounds to me like you'll be absolutely radiant! Congrats! :)

freiamaya 05-29-2006 09:43 PM

Focus on the big picture! There are lots of ladies out there who diet like crazy to be "perfect" for the wedding, when the focus on your wedding is marrying the man of your dreams. Often, these same ladies turn into bridezillas, as the focus is on how everything looks. What is important is how you and your groom feel. That feeling will last longer than anything else. He clearly loves you the way you are! So, don't sweat the small stuff. Everything will turn out just fine for your wedding.

Heather 05-30-2006 09:11 AM

Just to echo what the others said: do what you can but enjoy the day and your MARRIAGE (not just the wedding). I flew at your weight (and heavier) and had the same experiences Jilly had -- I definitely "fit", but sometimes needed a extender, and did prefer having the armrest up next to me. I also couldn't really use the tray table. Hubby is also big and we took to getting seats that we not next to each other as that was quite uncomfortable at the time... less so now, I think...

I was also a morbidly obese bride, but that didn't stop me from having a great wedding day.

ENJOY!!!!!

Mel 05-30-2006 02:09 PM

You'll be a beautiful bride no matter what your weight.:) Please don't crash diet or try to super-low carb before your wedding or honeymoon. You may be a size or two smaller for your pictures, but the first bite of cake or the first drink will cause you to swell painfully if you've been carb-depleted. It won't be worth the swollen fingers, ankles, and bloated feeling.

If you are dieting now, I'd suggest continuing to do what you are doing, as long as it is healthy and sustainable. If you are on a very low carb diet, plan on staying on it through your reception and honeymoon. If you don't want to do that, I'd start adding in some healthy carbs so that you don't shock your system into massive water retention!

Congratulations! I love the idea of taking new pics a year from now!

Mel

Congrats! Don't worry, I weighed my highest when I got married. I look at my photos and dont even see the weight. I remember the day and that my husband loves me regardless of size. I stressed about it and all it did was create cravings. Just remember to hold your shoulders back and push your chin forward. Your photographer will take care of the rest! If you dont look good he doesnt look good!

Sassy_Chick 05-31-2006 05:30 PM

First let me say, CONGRATULATIONS!

I agree with all the ladies. EVERY Bride is beautiful in my opinion! :D I was close to the same size as you on my wedding and I looked beautiful, if I do say so myself. ;) Like labelle16352 said, the photographer will do his magic and he will make you look even more beautiful than you already are!

Your wedding day is a very special day for you and your future hubby. Focus on that part of it. Its about your life together. I think now a days too many people focus too much on how they will look and not about the actual marriage and what the important part is. The important part is your new journey in life together. That is very special. :grouphug:

So try to relax, and have fun!

Take heart

When I got married (14 years ago, age:32) I was also at my highest ever weight. I had a fear that If I wore white I'd look like a ship under sail while walking down the isle. In the Florida heat, I began walking a little block each day and totally watched EVERYTHING I ate. In four months 40 lbs were gone. After the wedding I finished by losing 90 altogether and wound up in the best shape of my life within 2 years. I'm going to encourage you to take heart and concentrate on yourself. I know you can do this.

kyethra 06-05-2006 05:30 AM

Thanks Everyone. I have to admit that I am freaking out right now. My ticker doesn't reflect it but I have gained weight. I have gained fourty pounds in less than six months. And I don't even know how it happened... part of it was diet/stress and maybe some of it could be due to hormonal/medication issues I have been having but it still freaks me out. I am near 300 now and my body shape has changed.

I have to admit I did/maybe even am still considering doing the crash diet thing until the wedding. But instead I have joined a gym nearby and started taking a pilates class. And I also signed up for this weightloss class thing they have at the gym. Every other week I go to class and the alternate week I meet with the personal trainer. I will definitely bring up my concerns about the weight and wedding with these people. I was thinking today, as I freaked out because of a binge, that maybe if I did the whole crash diet thing and then exercised a couple of hours a day that I might lose the 40 pounds... But then I got hungry and my hip injury from the car accident started to bother me so that was a no-no. I was talking to my fiance about it - this is one of the reasons I love him so much- I get depressed because I gain weight- I can talk to him about it and he is so supportive either way. Even if I decide I need a snickers then. And he mentioned that his jeans didn't fit anymore either- he has gained ten pounds- and is now at his highest weight ever too ( 172 pounds) so at least we have that in common. And he has agreeded that we can do a picture retake. So that is going to be another goal of mine. For now I am just going to do my best to be as sexy and healthy as I can be in time for the wedding :)

Misti in Seattle 06-05-2006 08:23 AM

Hi Kyethra

I am sorry you have gained weight... just hang in there and get back on a plan. I do encourage you though NOT to do the crash diet thing.

I hate to say this and don't mean to be unsupportive... but I am looking at your fitday log and... you are living on pizza, alcohol, ice cream, cookies, food bars, bread, candy and other junk! There are not a whole lot of healthful foods... proteins, fruits, veggies, fish, nuts, etc... on your menu. And Snickers bars are not a good solution to discouragement from being overweight. To be honest, I don't understand how you can "not know how it happened."

There are no magic pills. All of us here who are seeing the scales go down are working very hard at it and have given up... or at least severely limited... most of the things you are living on.

Good luck, and I encourage you to talk to your doctor and develop a healthful eating and exercise plan. A "diet" filled with items such as your current one is just not going to cut it. Again I don't mean to be cruel or insupportive... but those are just the facts. So come on... why not join us in a healthful plan??!! You can do it... many of us are!!

gma22 06-05-2006 08:44 AM

Weddings are stressful enough without you adding your weight to it. Relax and just let everything flow. Do the best you can of staying on a program and just look forward to it. Let me say regarding the airline seat. I was around 320 and road coach from Memphis to Las Vegas 2 years ago. It may be somewhat uncomfortable for you, but you will fit better than I did for sure. If you find the seatbelt doesn't fit, just ask for an extention and they will gladly give you one. Look forward to the life together with the man you love. Remember to respect each other and COMMUNICATE! Not just about problems, but about everyday things. Take it from a lady who has been married 34 years, make each other your best friend and enjoy each others company. Try to show interest in what your partner likes, whether you like it or not. You will make him happy and you might just find you enjoy it. Good luck to you and I know you will be a scrumptious bride!
