Default Too much exercise

Hi

I kinda fallen off the wagon a little in the last month - my running machine broke and I lost heart in the whole thing. Now Im back, after putting on 2lbs in the last month - to loose that plus another 2 stone.

Is there such a thing as too much exercise. For example if I got up before work and ran for 30 - 60 mins and did an hour when I got home - would it be too much. I used to run for an hour each day anyway, I just want to increase the exercise a bit so I loose a bit more.

I still east fairly sensibly, altho what with easter I have been eating a little chocolate

Instead of adding in more running, how about doing some strength-training along with the running?

I think the amount of cardio you're doing now is fine. If you add in some weights, you'll get a smaller, tighter body and keep your metabolism up - which will help with the weight loss.

As to the question of how much exercise is too much, the current US government recommendation for weight loss and maintenance is 60 - 90 minutes of exercise on most days. So long as you're in that range, you should be OK.

I just wanted to add that each body is different and the government's guidelines may not be appropriate for everyone. While regular exercise is essential to a healthy body, "too much" can interrupt the menstrual cycle. Unfortunately, there is no set limit for how much is too much. Though it's probably safe to adhere to the government's guidelines, listen to your body and cut back if you begin to have any adverse effects.

So if I did a small amount of weight training early in the morning and my running when I got home at night, this would be suitable?

Loopy why would you do only a "small amount of weight training" Do a good 30-50 mins of weight training and then at night do your cardio for the recommended time... To mix things up, in a few weeks, reverse your workouts, you should not stick with the same workout all the time because you will reach a plateau, keep your body guessing and this will help with the weight loss...

I would say that you are exercising too much when you start accumulating injuries, especially with low intensity training such as cardio.

I thought that usually was associated with the extremely low bodyfat levels some female athletes achieve. Can this happen to an overweight woman?

You might want to try this program to start http://www.self.com/challenge/workou...6/ch_wo_month1. It's simple, geared for beginners and all you need is a couple of dumbbells (or you could even start with canned goods if you don't want to buy any equipment right away). Good luck, I know you'll see great benefits from adding strength training, I know I am!

It can happen to any woman who experiences a change in body fat - whether she's underweight, 'normal'-weight or overweight.
