Default Is it okay to work our when your sick?

I have been really sick the last few days - I have been working out (1 hour on treadmill) but I was wondering is it okay to work out when you are sick? Or should you give your body a break?

My dietitian friend told me that if my illness was just above the chest, such as a head cold, sore throat etc, then it was fine to work out, but if it involved aches or pains in other parts of the body then I should rest. I was so worried about resting from exercise recently when I got sick, but it was honestly the best thing I could have done for my physical AND mental wellbeing.

Hope that is of some help. And I also hope that you are feeling better soon.

Take care,

Zelma

i work out most of the time when i am sick...

unless i have a fever, bad cough, or feel faint or sore all over (usually the flu)

if my problem is sinus/congestion/migraine related, working up a sweat usually helps me feel better

It depends I mean if you have cramps exercising does wonders, but if your sick like caughing, headaches and etc, I would give my body a rest, don’t over work yourself.

sotypical, first of all, thank you for the compliment. I can never get too many of those, since I am still getting used to the 'new me'. I'm not exactly sure when I'll truly get used to seeing a reflection of someone with a 'figure' when I look in mirrors or shop windows (which I do a lot of).

I'm really glad that you listened to your body and didn't push yourself any further. I think that you should take a few days 'forced' leave from exercising. Please don't feel guilty about it and just know that you will be helping yourself in the long run. My 4 rest days were the best things I could have done and I actually lost weight that week, which was an added bonus. I think I was sabotaging things by over-exercising - something I would NEVER have thought I would say about myself!

It sounds as though a doctor's visit may be on the cards for you if you don't feel any better soon. You didn't mention if you had seen a doctor already. I know that they usually just tell you to go home and get lots of rest and keep the fluids up, but it could be worth getting checked out anyway.

Take care of yourself,

Zelma

You may want to stay out of the gym when you are sick, not just for yourself but for everyone else. When you work out, your ammune system is at it's most vonurable. Which means that if you are next to me on the treadmill huffing and puffing your sickness, it's easier for me to get sick. Do yourself a favor and give your body a rest. A few days of not working out is not going to kill you, but it could make me ill. Good for you for being dedicated though.

Personally, I wait until I feel better. I have tried in the past to do it anyhow and end up making it worse and being sicker longer.

Anytime you have shortness of breath with a cough or cold symptoms it is best to let your body rest. I have found that even with a sore throat, my symptoms get worse if I exercise to the point of sweating heavily. Just take the break and you will feel better. If not better soon, see your doctor.

I have a treadmill at home

But none the less I am taking a break and I went to the doctor today and he listened to me and said it is a bug and he gave me some real expensive pills to stop the coughing. So lets hope they work because I am going on 3 days with no sleep.

!!!! Sotypical, I should read you a bed time story! I've been told that I ramble on and on and sidetrack so much that people fall asleep on me! I think you be fine as long as you drink enough water and eat your healthy foods! I really hope you get enough sleep- I hope those mean kids who threw rocks at your window get whats coming to them! Sometimes its just so strange how bad things happen all at once! Stay strong
