I'm back! Starting the detox diet (it looks tough!)

  • I was so close to goal back in August, but then we bought a new house, moved, and took on a foster child. Stressed is an understatement! I started eating horrible again and gained 15 pounds.

We decided that foster parenting was not for us, at this time in our lives, and life is better. Now I need to get myself back to healthy.

I was trying to google a bunch of some issues I've been having (increased acne, bad taste in my mouth, fatigue) and all signes point to dehydration and toxins.

I'm going to try this detox diet to kick off my weight loss, and it looks like it will be hard to satiate. No breads, no dairy, no sugar, no caffiene...

All I can have is fruit, veggies and rice? Nuts and olive oil.

Anyone have any good links? I'm going to do some shopping tonight. off to change my ticker now.
  • You know that "detox" diets don't really do what they claim, right? People who promote these diets, and supplements that claim to do the same things, will tell you it will cure everything under the sun. The truth is that your body "detoxes" on its own, and any toxins you have that it can't deal with require medical attention, not a super-restrictive diet or weird supplements.

There's nothing wrong with doing something somewhat restrictive and based on whole fresh foods as a MENTAL cleansing process, but you shouldn't do it more than a couple of days. And, elminating sugar, caffiene, etc. certainly isn't badd for you. But, for example, the list of foods you've said you're allowed contain very little protein. Without taking in any protein, your body will start consuming your own muscles to get what it needs. Not a smart way to "lose weight."
  • Hi CoolMom!

I was suffering from several of the things that are plagueing you and a few more. I have improved so much just by drinking plenty of water. I've also eliminated caffeine and carbonated beverages.

Best of luck to you on your journey.
  • Well, the signs you mention are also a symptom of overtraining. I don't know if you've been exersizing a lot but I mention it just to point this out to anybody who may be having overtraining symptoms. The last time I lost (I've rebounded) I went through a bout of over training. I was lifting too much. I got acne, fatigue, eye twitches and a horrible bout of cold sores. My body's immune system was being compromised by working too hard and not resting enough on limited calorie intake. I can only imagine what might have happened to me had I tried the detox diet? I'd have consumed every muscle I had and probably fainted during a workout.

I agree with funniegrl, the diet you posted looks quite unhealthy to me. There is nothing toxic about lean protein from healthy sources. Why can you have rice, but not beans, barely, whole wheat?

On a side note, anybody suffering from acne I do generic Proactive-like treatments like Klear Action and I've not had a problem since. I was very skeptical but they did work for me.

Good luck on whatever you do coolmom. I don't think any diet that compromises on protein is compatible with fitness in the long term. So I hope the detox diet is limited in duration.

  • I agree with everyone. Your body will detoxify itself. As far as dehydration goes, the cure for that is water. However, those symptoms could be signs of something else entirely. Don't believe everything you read on the internet. These "detox" diets aren't healthy and don't really do anything for you except make you hungry. And I agree with another statement, you won't be getting enough protein. Therefore your body will start feeding off your muscle.

Honey, the best way to get back on track is to start doing whatever it was you were doing before you gained your 15 pounds. Just get back to healthy eating and watching your caloric intake and it will come back off
