My best friend in high school went through that. Her sister was naturally tall and very slender, whereas she (my friend) was naturally sort of short and stocky. You could tell just by having dinner at their house which one was more "popular" with Mom. And not to get too off-topic, but on the subject of "Moms" and the damage some of them can do...my Mom was anorexic when I was growing up (I've posted this on other threads, too, so sorry if it's repeat info.) Anyway, when I was 15, I went to visit my uncle in Spain -- and quickly contracted amoebic dystentary from some bad tapas my cousin Javier fed me. Long story made short, I spent 14+ days in bed (and in the bathroom) and lost about 25 lbs. in those two weeks. And I had started off at about 140 lbs, so it really wasn't a "good look" for me. I eventually was well enough to fly home and my Mom met me at the airport. She TOTALLY flipped out..."flipped out" meaning I'd never seen her so HAPPY in all her life. And it wasn't because I was finally home (and walking for Pete's sake)...it was because I was so thin. She took a photo of me then and there, and it's still on her mantle today because (in her words) it's her "favorite picture of me." Which is fairly sick considering the fact that I (in all seriousness) look like I've got about 4 hours to live in that pic. Not to mention the fact that the photo was taken in 1988. And it's now....{{{{checks watch}}}} 2005.
So I guess my point is that the cruelty and insensitivity doesn't necessarily have to come in the form of verbal insults...there's LOTS of ways to make someone feel like a pile of doggie doo.
Sorry, I think that came out more as a rant than anything else...OBVIOUSLY, I'm still very bitter about it.
