day 157 ...

no late-night eating ... 116 days in a row and another new world record !

some days, everything just goes great, and yesterday was one of those. today we are back to the usual west coast drizzle after a spectacular run of incredible weather.

at 181.5 lbs i have a decent shot at making goal of 180 lbs by month end. i am not going to starve myself though, just to make it. eating a healthy and adequate diet (while running a calorie deficit) is the plan here, and it has worked just great so far. staying the course.

was going to indulge in a muffin yesterday but the bakery was closed by the time i got there ... saved me a bunch of calories, so there's that. also won 10 bucks on the lottery AND got a rebate from car insurance AND picked up a freebie dirt bike project from craigslist AND my favourite sports team won last night, so i am on a major roll here !

water is my friend.

day 159 ...

no late-night eating ... 118 days in a row and another new world record !

the morning weigh-in was a roaring success ... 179lbs. ! i haven't been in the 170's since i quit smoking over 20 years ago. not only can i now see the light at the end of the tunnel, i can smell the fresh, cool air !

perhaps that's not the best analogy, though. when i reach the end of the tunnel, i don't "get to" go back to my old way of eating; to do that would mean that i have just been wasting my time. for the most part, the changes in my eating habits are going to be permanent. when i reach goal, i do get to add a few calories back to my intake so as to maintain, rather than lose, weight ... and those additional calories will be very welcome indeed, but devouring a whole pie, or 2 dozen cookies, or 6 slices of bread/butter/jam, all washed down with a litre of milk ... that is in the past and i'm not going back there. food is not my drug nor my hobby.

the plan for today ... stay the course.

day 160 ...

no late-night eating ... 119 days in a row and another new world record !

an old problem has re-surfaced, seemingly for no reason... morning headaches ... have had 2 in a row now. i have been on the evening coffee program for maybe 2 months with no issues; thought i had it beat. the ONLY difference these last 2 days is that i was given a bag of potatoes and have eaten them 2 nights in a row. since starting the new eating regime i have had packaged hash browns several times and regular potatoes 2 or 3 times , so i don't think it's the potatoes ??? never heard of potatoes causing headaches but, as i say, nothing else has changed. will do a search and see what i come up with.

otherwise ... business as usual.

a 3 star day ... 22 in a row.

edit : a quick search shows that potatoes are actually considered beneficial in regards to headaches due to both the water content and the potassium content. looking elsewhere.

day 161 ...

no late-night eating ... 120 days in a row and another new world record !

goal for april is 180 lbs and the scale is vacillating between 179.5 and 180.5 ... so there's that. should be good as long as i don't mess up over the next 3 days.

water is my friend. my special friend is frozen fruit; this is one of my guilty pleasures ... thoroughly defrosted and then warmed up in the microwave to slightly above room temperature. this brings out the sweetness of the fruit. i have it with breakfast and as part of my after-dinner dessert with oatmeal and cottage cheese. i sometimes also have a bit mid-day for a healthy snack. who knew that fruit, oatmeal and cottage cheese could taste SO delicious that it really feels like "cheating" ?

there's no question now that my weight loss isn't what it used to be in the early days. i had gotten used to losses of 1.5 lbs per week quite consistently. that has now slowed to about 1 lb per week. still very good, in fact, that was the goal all along, but it was so nice to see it coming off at a quicker pace than planned.

stoopid scale always seems happy to toss an unearned pound back on me at the end of the month, right before the weigh-in ... whateva ! the official weigh-in is tomorrow, so we shall see what's up then.

with the sun rising earlier every day, so am i. the downside to this is that there are more hours available during which one can be tempted to eat, but i firmly believe that i am still running a calorie deficit every single say, however small it may be.

the scale wouldn't co-operate in taking back that unearned pound so as to allow me to make goal for april. that's about par for the course, i suppose. it will usually make up for it when i least expect it and, besides, i know better than to fret over the inaccuracies of a low-end digital scale that must be over 20 years old. moving on ...

current weight = 181lbs.; goal for june 1 = 177 lbs.

lately, i find myself having to make an effort to get my 4 glasses of water every day. the one in the morning is fairly automatic, as is the one late at night, but getting two more in during the day seems to be a challenge, and it is these 2 daytime glasses that are the most helpful in curbing the snacking. being aware of the problem is half the battle, so there's that.

i am about due for a change of pace so will likely indulge in some sushi again tonight.

still plodding along. i have always had trouble finishing things, so with the goal being so close at hand i am a little worried. still wanting a snack in the middle of the night and/or just before sleep, and still have to force myself a bit to drink water. the good news : i really enjoy every single thing i eat now. who knew that beans, brussels sprouts, oranges, etc were absolutely delicious. still miss my pies and bread of course, but once a week or so i indulge in a muffin and croissant so i dont feel totally deprived in that department. the bad news : eating those things just leaves me wanting more, more, more !

last night i had a lot of trouble sleeping because i had a HUGE nap during the day. so of course, while i am tossing and turning my food-addicted brain tries to sell me on the idea of a snack ... 'just to knock me out ' ... i got through it, but am still tempted every night, without exception, the only difference is that it is stronger and more prolonged when i have trouble falling asleep.

still working the plan, and the plan is still working, although the weight is coming off slower since my body mass is 30 lbs. less than when i started and i have maintained pretty much the same calorie intake.

a dessert that i now have virtually every night is oatmeal with thawed frozen fruit blend and about a cup of cottage cheese. occasionally i will go to the bakery and buy a muffin and croissant, and these will be a substituted for the oatmeal dish. that's what i did last night. i realized that i now find the oatmeal dish more filling/satisfying and obviously it packs more nutrients. in short, i think i actually prefer the oatmeal to the baked goods, which surprises the **** out of me.

the bad news ... have already done a fair bit of snacking today. going to have to stick to water and not much else until evening in order to have any sort of calorie deficit at all.

having engaged in a fair bit of snacking early yesterday i continued throughout the rest of the day struggling to get it under control. in the evening i realized that i hadn't consumed much water at all, so that was probably why. in the end, i salvaged the day with a very small dinner and caught up with my water intake. fortunately, when i do snack, it's pretty healthy stuff. since i live alone, i am able to keep junky foods out of the house, so i am fortunate that way. those who are trying to take charge of their food choices while having a junk-eating spouse or teenager in the house must have a much harder time.

no late-night eating ... 134 days in a row and another new world record !

been rising with the sun lately and that creates more hours to eat/think about eating ... so there's that. trying hard to keep the snacking under control. when i feel that i have perhaps eaten a bit too much during the day i try to maintain the calorie deficit by having a fairly light dinner.

if nothing else, these past 175 days have taught me to really appreciate simpler, healthier food. don't get me wrong, if the opportunity presents itself to dive into a batch of home-made cookies or a pie, i am still 100% capable of going off the rails, but overall, i see myself as having developed a much better awareness of what i am eating and what effect it will have on me both short and long-term.

nothing to report. still fighting the good fight re: night-time eating . getting adequate water (easier to do when the weather is warm like it has been lately). i have been indulging in canned beans lately. this is high-calorie stuff . i have been eating them because a) they are delicious and, b) i want the fibre. i am going to have to swap it out for a veggie and see if i can get the scale moving again.

okay !!! the scale has finally started to respond to my efforts ! with half a month to go i now have a decent shot at making goal (4lb loss) without starving myself. very happy about that. i would be fine with even a 3 lb. loss as that would confirm that i am still at a substantial calorie deficit with my current eating habits. will have to keep a leash on the beans and sushi though. HIGH calorie stuff right there.

the scale stayed down, confirming that it wasn't just a temporary glitch, so that's cool. went looking for a notch in my belt that isn't there ... i have to make a new one; also very cool. i indulged in quite a few prunes yesterday, but i need the fibre and i think i can afford the calories. i have noticed that my dinners are getting smaller as i choose instead to spread those calories throughout the day with several small (healthy) snacks.

closing in on half a year of the new and improved eating habits. never thought i would stick with it this long. i know that it would be incredibly easy to backslide, but i have made some changes that are healthy, and that i am happy enough with that i think they will be permanent.

the scale is certainly a finicky thing ... after not budging for an entire 2 weeks, it is now in free-fall ... go figure. i am now 1/2 lb BELOW target for the month with almost 2 weeks left in which to shed another pound. really ticking along on a great run. still have to fight the urge to eat every night, still have to force myself to drink water, but really, the plan is working, as long as i work the plan, and while i would love to eat more, i am very much enjoying everything that i DO eat these days.

day 182 ...

no late-night eating ... 141 days in a row and another new world record !

for dessert i indulged in 2 items from the bakery last night and woke up with a bit of a headache; so i had to pay twice for this ... once with the big calorie load and once with the headache ... actually 3 times because every time i eat that sort of thing i crave more immediately afterward. no penalty for the clean-eating category as it was planned and wasn't enough to push me into excess calorie territory.

the plan for today ... same as for the last 182 days ... mostly un-processed/minimally processed food, minimal sugar, minimal fat and 4 glasses of water. i do use butter on my vegetables, oil on my salad and a bit of honey on my oatmeal. essentially i follow a weight-watchers way of eating; nothing is off limits but the goal is a decent calorie deficit each day until i get to the maintenance phase. so far, so good.

got into a bit of junky snacking while at my daughters place yesterday; sandwich meat, crackers, a slice of bread with peanut butter ... i maintained a calorie deficit with a very light dinner, but it just goes to show that it's a lot easier to succumb to temptation when temptation is right in front of you. no demerit for clean eating as i did maintain my calorie deficit and with my plan, literally nothing is banned, food-wise (even alcohol/candy). eating junk just makes the deficit a lot harder to achieve.

well, it had to happen sooner or later ... let's just say that too many beers and nachos were involved.

the bad news : my world record for no late night eating sits at 145 days in a row;
: my world record for 3 star days sits at 48 days in a row;
: i still haven't learned to exercise self-control during a gathering of friends and/or family.

the good news : 145 days of no late night eating is, for me, a major accomplishment;
: 48 three star days in a row is, for me, a major accomplishment;
: i am aware of an area that has to be worked on (gatherings of friends and/or family;
: 1 day of over-indulging does not undo 186 days of fantastic work.

today is rainy and will probably be spent home alone so it's back in the saddle and marching inexorably towards goal.

after more than half a year of doing this i still have to make a conscious effort to get 4 glasses of water into me. most days i am gulping down the last glass late at night. c'est la vie, old habits die hard, i suppose. speaking of old habits, avoiding late-night eating remains a challenge every single night. fortunately, i only have to get through 1 or 2 waves of temptation before i eventually fall asleep. if i were to give in, i think i would have a calorie excess every day ... so there's that.

had a beer late last night, so giving myself a demerit for late night eating. the beer itself is not the crime, i just should have decided to have it earlier in the evening.

other than that, nothing new to report. just want to make note of a couple of trouble areas that have now gone away ...

morning headaches ... since i started having an evening coffee (many weeks ago) i have had only 2 or 3 morning headaches and i would be willing to bet that they were caused by my forgetting to have a coffee the night before.
the obvious solution would be to cut down on my caffeine intake so that i don't go through withdrawal in the middle of the night ... but i ain't doing that.

falling asleep ... without my big dose of food at night i had a hard time sleeping well at first. it took a LONG time, but my body seems to have adjusted and i now fall asleep fairly easily and sleep fairly soundly through the night.

may has been a weird month; after not budging for the first 2 weeks, the scale went into free-fall for a few days, then crept part way back up and then went into snooze-mode for the remainder of the month. tomorrow is weigh-in day; at least i won't have gained weight but it sure was a lot more fun losing 6 lbs. a month like in the early days. not going to starve myself today in a last minute effort to maximize the stats for the month. that would be a serious deviation from the plan which is basically to make permanent, healthy changes to the way i eat. staying the course, working the plan.

the goal for june ... a 4 lb. weight loss. also, i am going to raise the water intake target from 4 to 5 glasses per day. there are 2 reasons for that ...1) it's summertime and 2) it really seems to help reduce the snacking. easier said than done but i am going for it.
