Your regulars

Since beginning your weight loss journey, what specific foods do you eat most days that you previously didn't?

For me, it's greek yogurt, eggs, nuts, and fruit. I used to eat all of these occasionally but nowhere close to daily.

I didn't love regular yogurt so it was never a frequent thing for me. I do love greek yogurt though (particularly Fage). I ate it at least 5x's a week for a couple years. I think I o.d.'ed on it though, didn't want it for a year, but now I'm back into it. Some strawberry fage topped with walnuts is as good as it gets to me!

During weight loss, I also ate avocados and guac way more often. For a while, I was going through 1 or 2 avocados a week.

I used to never eat sweet potatoes except for on Thanksgiving. But during weight loss, I probably ate 2 or 3 a week.

So how about you? What graces your taste buds on a daily basis now that used to be rare or never?

tadaponce 09-21-2013 02:18 PM

Definitely eggs, Greek yogurt, JELLO, cottage cheese and protein shakes!!

I also indulge in a VitaTop from time to time :-)

NYFLAgirl 09-21-2013 03:46 PM

Definitely eggs, which I used to hate. Also hummus which I eat almost everyday and love.

I also used to hate fruit when I was heavier. Now I love fruit and it definitely is what I go for when I'm craving something sweet.

Jacqui_D 09-21-2013 05:46 PM

Boiled eggs: I eat this for breakfast every morning. Salad: I eat it daily unless I run out and haven't gotten to the store yet. Nuts: Great snack but I have to be mindful of them, because they are so easy to overeat!

rubidoux 09-21-2013 05:53 PM

I go through phases where I'll eat the same food for weeks at a time, and then I switch to a new one... My favorite recent thing is cooking up some bacon, saute some onions in the grease, then scrambling a few eggs in it, and tossing in a handful of grated cheese. So yummy and satisfying, and the weight just falls off.

vintagecat 09-21-2013 05:55 PM

Fruit and rhubarb for smoothies (dinner) more vegetables (we've always eaten them but they assume a more important role) peanut butter and cottage cheese. It's for us more about what we've cut way down on: Cheese, sweets, (my husband is the cookie monster) pasta dishes, chips, crackers and snack foods, pizza, burgers, other fast food.

alaskanlaughter 09-21-2013 06:13 PM

I like greek yogurt now, olive oil on dishes where I never had tried it before, more emphasis on vegetables, watching portion sizes, stopped baking sweets at home, and lately I've been into protein bars because I like one after weight training

Wendyg311 09-21-2013 07:07 PM

High fiber cereal.

Samantha18 09-21-2013 07:46 PM

Greek yogurt, eggs, and sweet potatoes for me as well! I never disliked yogurt or eggs, but didn't see a need to bother with them when I wasn't eating healthy.

I use to just eat canned yams on thanksgiving, but now real sweet potatoes are one of my favorites too. I would eat them even if I wasn't trying to eat healthy because they're one of my favorite foods now. I don't even put anything on them and they taste amazing, and are low calorie.

Also, strawberries and almonds. Those go on my list every week :D.

IanG 09-21-2013 08:15 PM

Salads (you name it, it's in it), oily fish (I know every canned fish available to man), shellfish (oysters, muscles, clams, scallops, crab, lobster), hummus (TONS of the stuff), Isoflex (whey) powder, low calorie bread and mushrooms. Oh, and snails.

But in a pinch, as another poster said, you just cannot beat a boiled egg.

happybug 09-21-2013 08:15 PM

Greek yoghurt here too. I don't like the taste of the diet yoghurts. My diet is more varied now, I am eating a lot more of everything to try to keep it from being monotonous. More diet drinks oh and oven baked wedges, love them.

Larry H 09-21-2013 09:47 PM

I have always liked greens but seldom ate them until I started dieting. Since dieting I frequently have meals that are entirely greens such as Collards, Spinach, Turnip greens and such.

A really weird craving that my body has is for Sauerkraut :dizzy: I have this as a favorite evening snack. I open a 14 oz can put it in a bowl, heat it in the microwave and eat the whole thing :) I I have to have a craving at least this has only 70 calories in a whole can. Of course it has a years worth of sodium :D

I do not know why I crave that but I sure do.

AwShucks 09-21-2013 10:08 PM

Yogurt and cottage cheese for me. I rarely drink milk anymore, but my nails are really strong from all the dairy I'm getting. Veggies, of course, including Spaghetti Squash as a sub for pasta. And, I second Sweet Potatoes and nuts.

LisaTcan 09-21-2013 10:59 PM

I love greek yogurt and cottage cheese, I eat one or both every day. I drink a lot of seltzer water during the day or unsweetened iced tea. In the morning I have black coffee and at night I have a glass of wine :). Oh I also have gotten really into oatmeal because it's so filling. I love peanut butter but I feel like it's so high in calories so I haven't been eating it lately.

JeniH 09-22-2013 01:10 AM

Greek yogurt. I don't eat it plain (not a fan of the...sour? taste) but I mix it into waffle mix which I eat a lot. It adds protein to my waffles which helps fill me up and keep me full longer. Vanilla yogurt is the yummiest!

I also eat a lot of babybel cheese. I've always loved cheese and the babybel satisfies that craving for around 50-70 calories. A babybel and a handful of pretzels is a pretty common go to snack for me.

3fcuser291505109 09-22-2013 01:43 AM

Greek Yogurt plain, sweetened with stevia, wish i could afford Fage but i get a store brand one that's pretty good, i eat 1/2 a carton of it daily topped with fresh berries (usually strawberries) and slivered almonds

Salads, i eat a HUGE bowl daily, mostly all kinds of lettuce but some other veggies too, and home grown sunflower and broccoli sprouts

i eat 1/2 of a Large avocado daily with my salad

Whey protein shakes with blueberries

i love sweet potatoes (boiled and mashed, baked is too sweet) topped with a wee pat of butter as the fats allow FAR more antioxidant absorption and sweet potatoes are one of the earths most nutritious vegetables however i have forgotten to eat them and gotten out of the habit, i like eating them along side a hard boiled egg

love a mixture of frozen stir fried veggies topped with tomato sauce and served with tilapia

All this beats the 1/2 lb bag of M&M's i used to eat daily

newleaf123 09-22-2013 07:55 AM

Kale. It took lots of tries before I liked it. Now I love it!

Lisa, I, too, love peanut butter! I should've added PB2 to my list of current favorites. I go through at least a jar a week. I don't mix it with water, but usually eat it dry -- celery sticks dipped in the powder, or even just with a spoon along with a cup of SF hot cocoa or coffee. It's also good mixed in smoothies and for Spring Roll dipping sauce, etc. Try it! I couldn't live without it!

PS Just my opinion, but I didn't care for the chocolate/peanut butter version. It was too sweet for me.

kelijpa 09-22-2013 01:10 PM

Eating lots more fruits, usually bring two or three with me to work, bananas, apples and oranges. Eating lots more veg as well.

Thanks for the reminder about sweet potatoes, baked sweet potato fries are amazing.

I eat oatmeal with almond milk just about every day, especially during the week, with a handful of chopped nuts as well.

:sunny:

KittyKatFan 09-22-2013 02:13 PM

Veggies and fruits. I have always liked them, but I always went for the junky food options when I wasn't paying attention to my health.

Tuscany 09-22-2013 02:59 PM

Salads and greek yoghurt, which I eat virtually every day. I also eat more fruit than I used to eat, along with salmon and chicken. Finally, water...which I now drink every day. Before I drank a lot of Diet Coke, but I stopped that habit when I began my diet and I can no longer tolerate the taste of Diet Coke and other soda.

MedChick87 09-22-2013 04:16 PM

Definitely eggs and avocados! I've never disliked eggs, but now that I realize the amount of protein they have and how important that is, I eat them at least 3-4 times a week. The avocado thing is mostly stemmed from me just not realizing how delish they are. Idk why I've never eaten them before. I eat them on wraps, in guacamole, on salads. Gah...i'm obsessed. I have to limit myself b/c they're pretty high in calories, but at least they're healthy!

Amy Remixed 09-22-2013 05:31 PM

High fiber cereal, dairy, lots of veggies, fish, steak.

monmis12 09-22-2013 08:41 PM

soy milk

LisaTcan 09-22-2013 09:49 PM

AwwShucks - I tried PB2 and wasn't that into it..but I tried it mixed with water on toast..I kind of expected it to taste like peanut butter!! I should try eating it in some of the ways you suggested.

GirlieJayhawk 09-22-2013 10:27 PM

Veggies, especially zucchini!
I LOVE leftover zucchini with grilled chicken for lunch.

nelie 09-23-2013 07:44 AM

The funny thing is that my regulars change over the years and change with the season as even things I enjoy for months on end need to be changed up.

Summers/warmer parts of spring/fall - I tend to eat more salads, usually lettuce, tomatoes, artichoke hears, cucumbers, celery and various other veggies. I also tend to drink a smoothie in the morning during summers. Also, I eat a lot of summer type veggies such as zucchini and yellow squash. I tend to eat more melons, cherries and plums during this time as well.

Winters/colder parts of spring/fall - I tend to eat more soups, lots of vegetable soups. I also tend to have something warmer for breakfast, possibly oatmeal with pumpkin. We eat plenty of winter squashes during this time and also usually sweet potatoes. The fruits I tend to eat are apples.

Year round - I enjoy greens generally year round, especially kale but I like to mix up my greens. I eat beans year round a variety of them. I also eat a variety of grains including millet, brown rice (various types), other types of rice, wheat berries, quinoa, amaranth, etc. For any sandwiches, I use sprouted grain breads like ezekiel. Other regulars are hummus and almond milk.

Desiderata 09-23-2013 07:58 AM

I'm with nelie - there's a big seasonality to my routine. Which means I'm about to go through my semi-annual, "wait? what do I make/eat?!" forgetfulness/remembrance cycle again. One day soon I'll wake up and won't want another bite of cottage cheese until April. :D

Warm months - cottage cheese, protein shakes, green/berry kefir shakes, greek yogurt with homemade granola, salads

Cold months - um... hearty stews - like black bean sweet potato or turkey chili, oatmeal, eggs, granola with warm applesauce, roast vegetables, roast chicken, homemade beef bone broth

Year round - string cheese, rice crackers, grassfed milk with my coffee, seaweed snacks, tuna or sardines, spinach, occasional Quest protein bar.

Palestrina 09-23-2013 08:14 AM

Yogurt for me too, Total Fage 2%. With some sliced almonds, maybe some fruit or honey, and sprinkled with a tsp of grapenuts for crunch.

Eggs - I can't live without these. I used to only be able to enjoy them over easy with soft white bread to dip into it. But I've learned to love them hard boiled or scrambled with a whole bunch of spinach!

Salads - I've learned something important. I used to hate salad! I couldn't stand the side salad that my mom always made me eat or that seems to be ubiquitous with any meal. I just hate the thought of something cold and crunchy to accompany my warm satisfying meal. So I THOUGHT I hated salad. But as it turns out I actually love salad when it is the main meal. I can put all sorts of goodies in it and I love the crunch in every bite. Now instead of forcing myself to eat salad as a side dish for hot meals instead I make roasted or steamed veggies which I enjoy much more at dinner, and I eat a huge salad for lunch.

Avocados - it wasn't until I was pregnant that I learned to love these. I go through half an avocado a day in my salad.

Green Peas - I had NO IDEA how wonderful these guys are. My freezer is stocked full of these babies. I throw them into everything, they're a must in my salad (when they are left at the bottom of the bowl covered in dressing and mushy avocado... heaven!!!) I through them into rice dishes, soups, pasta, my husband doesn't care for them but I love them so :p

I love sweet potatoes too, never did before. I simply chop it up and boil until tender. Mash it up with a little butter, cayenne and allspice. It's uhmazing, but definitely a carby treat.

HelloNurse 09-23-2013 10:53 PM

All that I am now, and all that I am to become, I owe to boiled eggs and Greek yogurt. If it weren't for these delicious and affordable sources of protein to get me moving in the morning, I don't know what I would have done.

krampus 09-24-2013 11:54 AM

Greek yogurt, eggs, steam-in-bag veggies, chicken, tuna, turkey burgers, bagged dark greens and salad mixes, mushrooms, peppers, onions, sweet potatoes, squash, bleu/gorgonzola/goat cheese, obviously this is not all I eat but these are the most frequent flyers on my grocery list.

Also Quest bars.

Munchy 09-24-2013 12:39 PM

Always on my list are: the sharpest cheese I can find, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, beans, zucchini, San Marzano tomatoes, and eggs.

konablue 09-25-2013 04:05 PM

Veggies! tons of them- Kale, collards, spinach, chard, zucchini, tomatoes, cukes, celery, beets, mushrooms, avocados.....etc

Herbs and spices- fresh ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, cayenne, garlic, parsley, cilantro, seaweed gomasio

Fruit- berries are my fave, but apples are great as a quick snack

Almond milk, nuts, beans, quinoa, chia seeds and flax seeds, Vega One protein powder

Favorite on the go snack (there's always one in my purse at all times)- LARA bars :)
